The Mentalist Season 5: Darkness Ahead

18 May 2012 11:16 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Be warned, CBS viewers: if you think Patrick Jane hit rock bottom on this week's The Mentalist Season 4 finale, creator Bruno Heller has some disturbing news.

"We’re certainly going to see a little more of that hard darker side of him," Heller previews to Entertainment Weekly. "That’s one of Simon Baker’s great assets as an actor, he can play both charming and dark at the same time. The show is not going to turn into a much darker show, but that character will show more of those colors. We’re getting closer to the meat of what the show is about."

As for Red John? Heller says it's conceivable fans have already met him, and is also prepared to disappoint many followers once the reveal is actually made.

"The trick is going to be - and this is coming - bringing the audience along and making them second guess themselves and ask, »

'Mentalist' finale: Creator talks Red John reveal, Jane going darker next season

17 May 2012 10:02 PM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

[Warning: Contains spoilers from Thursday night's Mentalist finale]

Get that limo! Get that limo! But that dastardly Red John outsmarted Patrick Jane again in the season 4 finale, having used a decoy to fool the Cbi team. Worry not: EW.com has an interview with The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, who wrote tonight’s episode, answering burning questions about the finale, sharing thoughts about Red John’s identity, and giving hints as to what fans can expect next season and beyond (could The Mentalist suffer the same abrupt conclusion as CSI: Miami?).

Entertainment Weekly: You got to jailbreak Patrick Jane from the constraints of the Cbi. Bet you had fun writing this one. »

Spoilers: Is Patrick Jane Hitting Bottom on The Mentalist? Plus: Community, Vampire Diaries & Person of Interest

The Mentalist | What's this about Patrick Jane shooting someone? It's already been revealed that in the May 17th season finale, "The Crimson Hat," Jane "shoots one of his own," but costar Owain Yeoman has let a few more important details slip. He tells TVLine that the shooting promises to be “a really, really big deal for us,” and the episode is sure to be “our most action-packed finale to date.”

Luckily for Jane, a new character, a Vegas cocktail waitress played by Emmanuelle Chriqui, is rumored to come to his rescue. According to TVGuide, Loralei will appear in the season finale and also five episodes next season as Jane's new love interest. What else can you tell me about Patrick Jane's new love interest on The Mentalist? — Christine

Adam: Creator Bruno Heller wants to be clear about one thing: Loralei (Emmanuelle Chriqui) is no ordinary cocktail waitress, and as such viewers should take this relationship seriously. "It's certainly not a fling and it's not a spur-of-the-moment booty call or anything like that," Heller says. "She comes into Jane's life at a very, very low ebb. He's at a moment when he really needs a helping hand and a little ray of light, and she provides that."
