A Look at Pilot Strategies for ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and the CW

Peak TV has amped up the competition among networks for the past few pilot cycles. But this year, the growing number of television shows on all platforms and the lack of cancellations at the broadcast networks have compelled broadcasters to focus on quality instead of quantity: The Big Four have ordered nearly 20 fewer pilots this season than last.

Broadcasters seem to be playing it safe when it comes to auspices — the majority of projects hail from A-list producers and writers — but the nets are taking bigger swings when it comes to ideas, as only a handful of reboots and spinoffs are among the series in contention for 2017-2018. The networks also appear to be taking note of the country’s divisive climate with a slew of military-centric pilots.

Here’s our review of the strategies of each of the major networks this season:

Fox gives pilot order to post-apocalyptic vampire drama The Passage

28 January 2017 2:40 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Fox has given a pilot order for a TV adaptation of Justin Cronin’s post-apocalyptic vampire novel The Passage, which has Ridley Scott (Prometheus) and Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) executive producing and Elizabeth Heldens (Deception) penning the script.

The official logline reads: “The Passage begins as a character-driven government conspiracy thriller and morphs into a post-apocalyptic saga with vampires. The series spans over a century and focuses on a young girl named Amy who must save the human race.”

The Passage was published in 2010 and became a New York Times bestseller; the first instalment of a trilogy, it was followed by The Twelve in 2012 and The City of Mirrors in 2016. The rights to the tale were first picked up by Fox and Scott prior to publication in 2007, with John Logan (Gladiator) attached to write a feature film adaptation. »

It’s been a long time coming, but Justin Cronin’s bestselling horror trilogy The Passage is finally poised to spring off the page.

Emerging from a prolonged and difficult spell in film development – Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) was initially attached to develop the movie adaptation – Cronin’s vampire thriller has been repackaged for television, and we now have confirmation that Fox has ordered a pilot for the show. Variety has the scoop, confirming that Ridley Scott remains on board to executive produce the one-hour drama. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Heldens will handle script duties, and could potentially be elected showrunner should The Passage go on to earn a full-season order.

That’s all hypothetical for now, but we understand Matt Reeves is set to helm the pilot episode, having been attached to The Passage for six years and change. Evoking comparisons to I Am Legend – the film, »
