Filmmaker John Waters hitches a ride with indie band Here We Go Magic: 'It's just unbelievable!'

16 May 2012 6:51 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

We’re not making this up: Filmmaker John Waters was picked up while hitchhiking by indie band Here We Go Magic somewhere in Ohio today. A match made in hipster heaven?

The band’s bassist, Jen Turner, who tweeted her impressions during the ride @turnerjen, spoke with EW about the “mystical” experience just a few hours after their encounter. Turner, a hitchhiker herself, convinced her bandmates to stop after their sound guy recognized Waters on the side of the road.

“I’ve hitchhiked half my life,” she says. “It’s great to let go of the reins once in a while and see what happens. »

Community Review: A Shared Psychosis

10 May 2012 8:51 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

This week's Community picks up two months after the study group was expelled from Greendale following the riot at Starburns' memorial. In "Curriculum Unavailable," Abed is believed to be mentally unhinged and is sent to mandatory therapy for trespassing on Greendale's property.

Of course, as we all know, Abed is normally the one who has it right while everyone else just takes a few steps to catch up.

Let's just get this out of the way, Britta has definitely been drunk enough times to know that organic, all natural, health food is not going to take care of a hangover. If anything, Troy's bagel bite and Dorito casserole will probably do the trick. In fact, it sounds really good. Also, how awesome is the picture of Britta after a peyote trip? Love it.

So obviously everyone is still taking the expulsion pretty harshly. I can't believe two months has gone by! »

Richard Simmons Slams 'Biggest Loser' Methods

27 April 2012 10:28 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Richard Simmons -- America's unofficial weight loss "guru" for decades -- is criticizing NBC's popular show The Biggest Loser for using "terrible" tactics to get contestants to shed pounds.

While in an interview with MensHealth.com Simmons does admit that The Biggest Loser has "some merit," he believes that in general it takes the wrong approach to helping people reach their weight loss goals. "I'm not into any show that makes people compete when they lose weight."

Simmons adds his opinion that material incentives aren't good long-term solutions. "Voting off people every week because they didn't lose enough weight, or giving somebody a car or money because they did lose weight? That's terrible…Who are you competing against? It's you. You need to be doing this for you and only you."

Simmons, 63, also opens up in the interview about crying every time he's interviewed by Howard Stern. "I can't believe »

[Tribeca Review] The Playroom

26 April 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

We’ve all seen stories about the effects alcoholism has on children — for better, worse, and often somewhere in that underwhelming middle ground. And while I’m not averse to this mold, so long as it’s crafted with care, one of the main pleasures to be found in The Playroom is director Julia Dyer‘s tendency to — sometimes in a literal, visual sense — put the perfunctory conflicts and confrontations that would typically stem from this in the background, opting to place the children of a troubled husband and wife at the center of things.

Set almost exclusively in a suburban home in the fall of 1975, The Playroom revolves around four children (Olivia Harris, Ian Veteto, Jonathon McClendon, and Alexandra Doke) living in a household run by two parents (John Hawkes and Molly Parker) who, though not dysfunctional on the surface, are slowly pulling themselves apart with the trappings of alcohol. »

Cumberbatch Linked To Daughter Of Notorious Heiress Hearst

29 February 2012 12:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly dating the daughter of American heiress-turned-bank robber Patty Hearst.

The War Horse star ended a 10-year relationship with his longterm partner, actress Olivia Poulet, last March and his subsequent romance with fashion designer Anna Jones came to an end in January.

Cumberbatch has now reportedly moved on with model/actress Lydia Hearst, 27, who split from actor Jeff Goldblum last year.

The pair has been spotted on several dates, and they went to Sir Elton John's annual Academy Awards viewing party together on Sunday night, according to Britain's Daily Mail.

Hearst's publishing heiress mother Patty was famously kidnapped by a left-wing guerilla group in 1974 and she went on to rob a bank with them in California. She was later arrested and sentenced to 35 years behind bars, but only served two after her jail time was cut by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. »

This week's new DVD & Blu-ray

The Interrupters

The absence of this film in the longlist of nominees for the 2012 Best Documentary Oscar, along with Senna and Herzog's Into The Abyss, is being held as a sign of just how wrong the Academy can get things; if you've seen the other two you'll get some idea of the high regard this is held in to be mentioned alongside them. Directed by Steve James, maker of landmark doc Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters follows three ex-cons and gang members who place themselves in the line of fire – literally, in some instances – to try to curb the violence that has spun out of control on the streets of Chicago. They get to know the street gangs and talk to them in a common language that the police and social services seem ill-equipped to emulate. Their role as "violence interrupters" is an intriguing and brave one: they have no hope »
