Failed TV pilots that paved the way for breakout hits

24 February 2015 2:32 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Had these pilots been given the green light, we might have been without Breaking Bad, 24, Hannibal, Community and more…

It’s not all grumble and moan round here when TV networks decline to pick up pilots. Sometimes, we’re even grateful.

Hindsight teaches that every so often, passing on a particular show is the best thing a channel could have done. Not ordering one pilot to series spurs its creators on to start another, and frees up its cast to join new projects.

Had the failures below all thrived, there’s a chance we could now be living in a world with no Breaking Bad, Hannibal, or even South Park. Had these pilots gone on to enjoy healthy, lengthy lives, then Jack Bauer, Oberyn Martell, Chandler Bing and more might all be unrecognisable today.

Here then, are the TV pilots we’re grateful weren’t taken to series because their »

'Game of Thrones' Season 4 Bloopers

20 February 2015 3:09 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Earlier this week, we revealed new deleted scenes from Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season Blu-ray and DVD, which was released earlier this week. While fans continue the long wait for Season 5, we have a new gag reel from the hit HBO series, which features stars such as Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and many more screwing up their lines and even losing their balance.

In Season 4, while the Lannisters' hold on the Iron Throne remains intact, new and ongoing threats from the south, north and east threaten to tip the scales. As Stannis Baratheon and Daenerys Targaryen continue to grow their respective armies, the arrival of the Lannister-loathing "Red Viper of Dorne" poses a more immediate danger. In the north, the depleted Night's Watch seems overmatched against the advances of Mance Rayder's army of wildlings, which in turn is being trailed by an even »

Indie distributor Alchemy has snapped up North American rights to Mora Stephens' political thriller "Zipper," a 2015 Sundance premiere starring Patrick Wilson, Lena Headey, Ray Winstone, Richard Dreyfuss, John Cho, Dianna Agron, Christopher McDonald, Alexandra Breckenridge and Penelope Mitchell. Co-written by Stephens and Joel Viertel, "Zipper" will hit theaters and VOD later in 2015. Here's the synopsis: Sam Ellis (Wilson) is a man on the rise — a hotshot federal prosecutor on the cusp of a bright political future. But what was meant to be a one-time experience with an escort turns into a growing addiction threatening to destroy his life, family, and career. Review: Political drama 'Zipper' becomes 'Reefer Madness' for sex addiction

2 February 2015 9:30 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Just as sex scandals are pretty much as old as politics themselves, as long as we've had films, we've had cinematic depictions of sex scandals, usually serious and sometimes comedic. Whether filmmakers have had to be coy about the nature of the scandals -- see "The Best Man" or "Advise and Consent" -- or whether filmmakers have been able to directly tear sex scandals from the headlines -- see "Primary Colors" -- the ground has been fertile. Fortunately -- Unfortunately? -- sex scandals just keep coming along and we keep lapping them up, from Eliot Spitzer to John Edwards to Anthony Weiner. Bringing the genre to Sundance this year was "Zipper," a largely straight-faced approach to a plausibly finger-on-the-pulse topic, which falls flat because of a middle act in which the drama spirals into dated addiction craziness. When it's a political thriller, "Zipper" is respectably acted and presented and has some merit. »

Zipper: Interview with director Mora Stephens, Patrick Wilson, Dianna Agron, and Richard Dreyfuss

Mora Stephens (centered) with the cast of ‘Zipper’.

Zipper, the second feature by writer/director Mora Stephens, is a dark political thriller about an attorney whose political ambitions are put at risk due to his “zipper problem” (aka a taste for high-end escorts).   When we first meet Sam Ellis (Patrick Wilson), he’s a family man with good intentions, who is able to resist the temptations of the firm’s intern (Dianna Agron). But as his campaign manager (Richard Dreyfuss) and loving wife (Lena Heady) encourage him to run for district attorney, he finds himself in a downward spiral that may threaten everything he’s worked for.  By telling the story through Sam’s eyes, Stephens makes no apologies for this charcter’s behavior but tries to give a bit of understanding as to how one might fall down this rabbit hole. At the festival, we sat down with director Mora Stephens, »

'Game of Thrones' IMAX Screenings Score Big at the Box Office

While American Sniper topped the box office charts for a third straight week in a row, this weekend also marked the historic IMAX screenings of two Game of Thrones episodes. Deadline reports that the Warner Bros./IMAX presentation took in a healthy $1.5 million from just 205 screens, bringing in a per-screen average of $7,323. While these figures are not record-breaking numbers by any means, it does show that die-hard fans are willing to pay to see a show like Game of Thrones in large-format IMAX theaters. Here's what Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president Jeff Goldstein had to say in a statement.

"This is the first time that HBO has taken one of their series episodes and released it in IMAX. We see this as a future, and not just with HBO. There is a business here and an interest from a rabid fan base."

Sundance: Alchemy Buys Rights to Political Thriller ‘Zipper’

Zipper,” a ripped-from-the-headlines political thriller that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, has sold North American rights to Alchemy.

The film will be released in theaters and on-demand later this year. As the title suggests, the film is about an Eliot Spitzer-esque politician who can’t keep it zipped, leading to all sorts of headaches. In Variety, critic Geoff Berkshire offered a mixed appraisal, calling it, “tawdry but cripplingly self-serious.”

Mora Stephens directs and Patrick Wilson, Lena Headey, Dianna Agron, Ray Winstone, Richard Dreyfuss and John Cho star in the film.

Game Of Thrones Launches Season 5 Trailer

Following an IMAX screening of two season four episodes a couple of days ago, HBO played a trailer for the next batch of episodes, due to hit in April. 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Photos: Cersei, Tyrion, Arya & More

Although fans finally got to see the first full trailer from Season 5 of Game of Thrones earlier today, the "Three-Eyed Raven" brings yet another "vision" from the viral website ThreeEyedRaven.com. Unlike many of the previous "visions," which featured bits of old and new footage, this teaser gives us all new scenes, featuring Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and one of her dragons, Ramsay Snow (Iwan Rheon) examining Reek and Melisandre (Carice van Houten) lost in deep though. It should also be noted that the last shot showcases a crate on a dock, which very well may be the same container that Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) was forced into.

In addition to this brief video, TV Line has released new photos from Season 5, featuring Daenerys, Dorian Martell (Alexander Siddig), Melisandre, Tyrion and Varis (Conleth Hill), Podrick Payne (Daniel Portman) and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), Tommen Baratheon (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Cersei »

He soon finds himself addicted to the service and forced to come to terms not only with the legality of his behaviour but its affect on his burgeoning political career.
