Served in the Marine Corps for twelve years prior to embarking on an acting career.
Studied acting at the Film Industries Workshop and Actors West in Los Angeles.
Served as a member of the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1964. Subsequently, with the rank of commander, became public affairs officer for the Naval Reserve.
