Australian actors Deborah Mailman and Rachel Griffiths have begun production on the final six-episode season of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s award-winning female-led political drama series “Total Control.”
With screenplays by Stuart Page, Julia Moriarty, Pip Karmel and Meyne Wyatt, season three picks up almost two years after the explosive events of the second season.
Outsider turned kingmaker, Alex Irving (Mailman), is completely at home in the nation’s capital. While Rachel Anderson (Griffiths), now an occasional ally, is threatening to upend the entire system by establishing her own political party. However, as Alex attempts to carve out a nation changing legacy, a controversy engineered by her enemies threatens to destroy her career and public reputation. In the final season, Alex must make a choice: either she can stay true to her principles and accept defeat, or she can get her hands dirty and fight back.

In his latest video, Kevin sits down once again to talk about the new Zac Efron flick Gold. Written and directed by Anthony Hayes, Gold is at its heart a story about what people will put themselves through in promise of something better…
When two drifters are travelling through the South Australian desert, they stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found. The dream of enormous wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving (Keith aka Man #2) to secure the necessary equipment to pull it out of the earth. The other man (Virgil aka Man #1), remains on the spot and must suffer the harsh desert elements, preying wild dogs and mysterious intruders, whilst fighting the tumbling suspicion that he has been abandoned to his own fate.

This far into his screen career, it shouldn’t be a revelation to anyone that Zac Efron can act. He’s shown canny comic chops in the “Neighbors” films, wounded all-American ennui in “We Are Your Friends” and “At Any Price,” even a credible against-type chill as Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” — none of which has been enough to overtake his bland, floppy-banged, career-minting “High School Musical” persona in the popular imagination.
In “Gold,” an otherwise ordinary survival thriller from actor-director Anthony Hayes, Efron resorts to the same kind of extreme measures that fellow heartthrob Ryan Reynolds took to prove his worth in “Buried”: headlining a one-location genre piece so leanly conceived that it has scarcely anything to showcase but his commitment and grit. As a lone drifter guarding a precious quarry in deadly desert conditions in a faintly futuristic nowhereland, he’s good, as...

A single, bare tree interrupts the vast emptiness of the indeterminate desert landscape where “Gold” takes place. It’s a pathetic speck of shelter that does little to prevent the relentless heat from tormenting Zac Efron’s nameless character for the bulk of the film, his progressively weathered face giving new meaning to the words “blistering sun.” The location brings to mind the sparse set design of “Waiting for Godot,” (Beckett’s stage directions read: “A country road. A tree.”) as does the film’s narrative itself, a tale of similarly hopeless anticipation in the bleakest of atmospheres.
. Overall, however, “Gold,” like its title, does little to stand out in a crowd, so committed to its stripped-down style of storytelling and monotonous sepia color scheme that there’s little left for the audience to connect with, leaving us parched for something to focus on besides the purulent third-degree sunburn on Efron’s face.

"Out here, things start to get real strange..." Screen Media Films has revealed the official US trailer for the film Gold, which is arriving in theaeters in the US starting this March. When two drifters traveling through the desert stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found, the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment. The other remains and must endure harsh desert elements, ravenous wild dogs, and mysterious intruders, whilst battling the sinking suspicion that he has been abandoned to his own fate. Zac Efron co-stars with Anthony Hayes, who also directs the film. Not to be confused with the other Gold film starring McConaughey. We featured the first trailer a few months ago. This still reminds me of David Michôd's film The Rover with its gritty post-apocalyptic style.

Director-actor Anthony Hayes and his famous co-star deliver strong performances, but this dystopian vision becomes gratingly thin
Director Anthony Hayes is far from the first film-maker to have realised that the Australian outback provides great scaffolding for sparse dystopias, his tough and tense survival thriller Gold emphasising the vast, screen-buckling nothingness. Led by a grubby-looking and banged-up Zac Efron, continuing a long tradition of actors seeking critical acclaim by messing up their photogenic faces, the film is introduced with the text: “Some Time. Some Place. Not Far From Now…”
This is another way of saying that this South Australia-shot production is set during what Mad Max director George Miller describes as “next Wednesday”: a time in which “all the bad things we read in the news come to pass”. Happy happy joy joy Gold is not, in other words, with its vision of an ecologically ruined world that’s gone to the dogs.

Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for the film Gold, not to be confused with the other Gold film with Matthew McConaughey. The cast also features Susie Porter. Set in an unforgiving landscape, Gold is a film about what motivates greed and the lengths people will go to in order to secure themselves. At first glance, this seems like a spiritual sequel to David Michôd's underseen & underrated The Rover, also shot in Australia. Looks like another chance...

When dreams of unimaginable wealth take hold, they devise a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment.
Efron plays the man left behind, who comes up against unforgiving desert elements, ravenous wild dogs and mysterious intruders, all while wondering whether his partner is ever going to come back for him. Principal photography on the movie will begin in Australia this month — where film and TV production has been able to continue relatively unscathed during the Covid-19 crisis.

Max Sylvester (Photo credit: ABC News).
Anthony Hayes and Daniel Krige have secured the screen rights to the heroic story of Max Sylvester, the student pilot who managed to safely land a Cessna in Perth after his instructor passed out mid-flight.
Hayes and Krige are writing and plan to co-direct the 90-minute feature, working title Flight School, with events unfolding in real time.
The duo, who first collaborated on Krige’s 2007 crime drama West, aim to raise $500,000 from crowd-funding site Indiegogo and then seek completion funding from Screen Australia.
Sylvester, 29, called air traffic control just over an hour into his lesson at Perth’s Jandakot Airport one Saturday afternoon in September after his instructor collapsed.
During one very intense hour the air traffic controller coached Sylvester on how to fly and land the plane while his wife and three young children waited anxiously on the ground.

‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
Most Australian films are caught in a catch-22: Independent distributors are constrained in how much they can spend on P&a. The upshot: Films suffer from lack of visibility and find it tough, if not impossible, to achieve their box office potential.
That’s according to Red Dune Productions’ Martin Walsh, who produced Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan with Deeper Water Films’ Michael and John Schwarz.
The Vietnam War movie starring Travis Fimmel, Luke Bracey, Richard Roxburgh, Daniel Webber, Nicholas Hamilton, Aaron Glenane and Anthony Hayes has grossed $1.75 million in 13 days on 235 screens.
Walsh has no quarrel with the distributor Transmission Films, telling If: “They have done a sterling job with the resources they have, we love working with them and they were the only distributor willing to support our film.

‘Palm Beach.’
The head-to-head clash between Universal’s Palm Beach and Transmission Films’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan last weekend was far from ideal, but both films are positioned to have leggy runs thanks to word of mouth.
Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach opened in third spot behind the fourth weekend of Disney’s blockbuster The Lion King and the second lap of Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
Scripted by Ward and Joanna Murray-Smith, the comedy-drama about a group of lifelong friends reuniting to celebrate a special birthday rang up $1.14 million on 250 locations and $1.23 million with previews.
Starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, Greta Scacchi, Richard E Grant, Jacqueline McKenzie, Claire van der Boom, Aaron Jeffrey, Heather Mitchell and Matilda Brown, the film opened 3 per cent ahead of Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, which finished with $5.2 million, and at the same level as Jeremy Sims’ Last Cab to Darwin,...

Sam Cotton in ‘Diary of an Uber Driver.’
When Sam Cotton landed the title role in the ABC/RevLover Films’ dramedy Diary of an Uber Driver, he approached the job with some trepidation.
It was his first lead after playing Bruce, the nemesis of Luke McGregor’s Daniel in the ABC’s Rosehaven, and son-in-law Wayne in Sbs’s The Family Law.
He plays Uber driver Ben, whose life had always been in cruise control until his newish girlfriend Beck (Zahra Newman) gets pregnant in the six-parter scripted by Tom Ward, based on Ben Phillips’ blog.
He got the gig after doing a self-tape when he lived in Brisbane (he is now based in Sydney), followed by a call back in Sydney a few weeks later.
“At the outset I was kind of terrified but the director Matt Moore did so much to make me comfortable,” he tells If. “He...

Anthony Hayes in ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan’.
Anthony Hayes has been acting since he was nine. While there is no danger of him giving up that stellar career, for the present he is concentrating more on his other passions: writing and directing.
In the past five or six years he has been in the fortunate position of choosing roles he really wanted to do – in the movies Cargo, War Machine and The Light Between Oceans and TV’s Mystery Road and Seven Types of Ambiguity – rather than just for a pay cheque.
Now his primary focus is writing and directing, starting with Gold, a thriller in which he will co-star with Sam Worthington about two guys who discover the world’s biggest gold nugget in the Australian desert. After that he hopes to make Stingray, a crime thriller he wrote and was set to direct in 2016 until the financing fell through.

After Cannes’ opening night film “The Dead Don’t Die” got the festival off to a somewhat slow start with mixed reviews, Wednesday’s two debuts, “Les Misérables” and “Bacurau,” proved that this year’s lineup will have some life in it.
Ladj Ly’s “Les Misérables” isn’t based on Victor Hugo’s classic story, but it’s set in the same region in France and has the spirit of the original. Ly (picture above) originally directed an acclaimed short in 2017 of the same name that set the stage for this larger feature focused on police brutality and crime. The Guardian critic said Ly’s feature debut had a dose of “humor, cynicism, energy and savvy” and was worthy of some comparisons to previous Palme d’Or winner Jacques Audiard’s “Dheepan.”
Another reviewer even predicted we might already have a prize winner on our hands. “‘Les Miserables,’ Cannes...

Anthony Hayes.
Anthony Hayes will direct and co-star with Sam Worthington in Gold, a thriller about two guys who discover the world’s biggest gold nugget in the Australian desert.
Due to shoot in South Australia in September, the film will be produced by Deeper Water Films’ John and Michael Schwarz and Hayes’ Rogue Star Pictures.
Hayes co-wrote the script with his partner, former costumer Polly Smyth, her first writing credit.
The plot sees the men hatch a plan to excavate the gold as one leaves to secure equipment while the other stays behind to protect the discovery.
Saboteur Films, which reps Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan produced by Red Dune Productions’ Martin Walsh and the Schwarz brothers, is pitching the project at the Cannes film market.
Hayes tells If: “Polly and I wanted to come up with a smart film with few cast and one location.

There was a time when broken down civilizations populated by mindless, blood-thirsty creatures could play host to a fresh and frightening experience. That was fifty years ago when George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead forever changed the landscape of the horror genre. Since then, swarms of half-rate films, TV shows, and video games have run the idea dry. Everyone knows how to survive World War Z, and that the only way to divert Nazi Zombies from your tail is to throw an exploding monkey doll.

Cargo, Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke’s Netflix production based on their sensationally original short, takes a step in the wrong direction, relying heavily on the tropes of the genre that the...

From the producers of Jennifer Kent’s critically acclaimed 2014 Australian horror The Babadook comes a fantastically well devised, gripping and hugely compelling post-apocalyptic movie with a difference. Displaying strong indie credentials from the get go, Cargo presents a bleak and harrowing vision of a future dominated by a violent pandemic which turns anyone infected into a rabid flesh-eating zombie. Staring Martin Freeman as desperate man in a race against time to save his child from a gruesome fate, the film plays with the usual zombie movie tropes all the while providing a rich and dense story of human resilience in the face of unmitigated violence and utter despair.
Adapted by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke from their 2013 short film of the same name, Cargo tells the story of a Andy (Martin Freeman), a father stranded in the middle of a zombie apocalypse in rural Australia with his infant daughter. When...
