The life of Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi is headed for the big screen with Legendary Pictures tapping “All Is Lost” director J.C. Chandor to write and possibly direct his biopic.
Legendary topper Thomas Tull, part owner of the National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers, will produce with Mary Parent. Tony Ponturo and Fran Kirmser will exec produce.
Legendary has acquired the movie rights via deals with the Lombardi estate and producers of the Broadway play “Lombardi,” based on the David Marannis book “When Pride Still Mattered.”
Lombardi won five NFL titles in nine years of coaching the Packers. He has long been a part of the NFL’s image; the award given to the winner of the Super Bowl is the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Lombardi died in 1970 at the age of 57.
The NFL launched development of its own Lombardi biopic in 2007 with Andrew Hauptman’s Andell Entertainment (“Lions for Lambs”) and Chris Olsen.
