Talkshow Host Race Heats Up 2015 Daytime Emmys

25 February 2015 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Last year, there was a tie in the 41st annual Daytime Emmy Awards’ talkshow host category, between Katie CouricKatie” and Dr. Mehmet Oz of “The Dr. Oz Show.”

It’s a dead certainty that double honor won’t be repeated, since “Katie” was canceled. Also, while Oz is still on the air, he spent his summer being grilled before a Senate committee over the promotion of questionable diet aids on his show. How voters handle the scandal remains to be seen.

As for the rest of last year’s nominees, syndication’s “The Rachael Ray Show” continues — with Ray often nominated but winless in the host category — along with “The Talk” on CBS.

ABC’s “The View” is a wildcard for a repeat nom after a rollercoaster year saw the retirement of Barbara Walters, exits of Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy, introductions of Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace, and »

"We'll hop on a plane, fly to the Bahamas, do a little spa weekend," Jim said.

We will never get tired of Family Feud contestants shouting out weird answers. If the day ever comes where we are not interested in watching clips from this show, we are probably dead so everyone had better be mourning us. You know what? Family Feud deserves more Emmy awards. Sure, it's received some in the past, but it really needs to be showered with awards on a weekly basis because it is rife with moments like this one. Is there an Emmy award for Most Times the Host Is Rendered Speechless? In this particular video, host Steve Harvey, bless his soul, asked the contestants in the first round: "Name something a doctor might pull out of a person." Well, we immediately think "baby" or »

Weekly Ratings: CBS Wins Despite Lower Grammys; ‘Dead,’ ‘Big Bang, ‘Empire’ Top Series

11 February 2015 5:31 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Even a slightly off-key Grammy Awards telecast was enough to lift CBS to a rather easy weekly ratings victory in key demos during the first frame of February.

The awards program averaged an 8.3 rating/23 share in adults 18-49 and 24.82 million viewers overall, according to Nielsen in-home viewing estimates, down 16% and 13% respectively from last year. And though these are the top same-night scores for any entertainment broadcast this season, these were the show’s lowest numbers in six years.

The Grammys are hardly alone among declining kudocasts, though, as some of the air seems to have come out of the awards-season balloon after being inflated, in large part due to social media, for a few years.

Earlier in the 2014-15 season, adults 18-49 ratings were also lower for the “Cma Awards” on ABC (down 4%, 4.5 vs. 4.7), the “American Music Awards” on ABC (down 16%, 3.8 vs. 4.5) and the “Golden Globe Awards” on NBC (down 11%, 5.8 vs. »

Behold the NAACP Image Awards, where somehow Antoine Fuqua did a better job directing "The Equalizer" than Ava DuVernay on Best Picture winner "Selma" or Gina Prince-Bythewood on "Beyond the Lights." Lots of dubious choices like that throughout this year's 46th annual awards, which tends to be a bit of a tradition, actually. ‘Family Feud’ Continues Ratings Surge, Hits Another High

3 February 2015 2:26 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Things are getting interesting atop the syndicated gameshow ratings scoreboard, following another series-high score for “Family Feud.”

For the week ending Jan. 25, longtime leaders “Wheel of Fortune” (7.4 household rating, 11.925 million total viewers) and “Jeopardy” (7.0, 10.896 million) remained the most popular shows in the genre overall, but the Steve Harvey-hosted “Family Feud” (6.8, 10.247 million) was in its closest position yet, according to Nielsen estimates.

The 6.8 is the best ever for “Feud,” which is produced by FremantleMedia North America and distributed by Debmar-Mercury. The gameshow grew 3% from the previous week (6.6) and was 11% higher than the same frame last season (6.1), when it surpassed the 6.0 ratings threshold for the first time since the advent of Nielsen People Meters in 1988.

Season-to-date, “Family Feud” is up double-digits across the board from last year, including 20% in households (6.0 vs. 5.0).

In the key syndication demo of women 25-54 last week, “Family Feud” (series-high 3.6) towered over both “Wheel of Fortune” (2.7) and »

Saturday Night Live, Ep. 40.12: “Blake Shelton” lets the cast shine

Saturday Night Live, Season 40, Episode 12, “Blake Shelton

Aired January 24, 2015 at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)

Host/Musical Guest: Country music gets a bad rap in a lot of ways outside of the bible belt. Part of this is justifiable: The dregs of country music are ripe ground for parody, what with their trucks and beer and love for the troops. “Bro country”, in particular, has as many staunch defenders as it does haters who want to watch it burn in a tire fire. These are the kinds of country songs that take those truck and beer aspects of the genre, crank it up to 10, and generally are performed either very drunk or without shirts on (for a good primer on this, just listen to Maddie & Tae’s excellent takedown “Girl In A Country Song”). For many, Blake Shelton is the grand poobah of bro country, »

Blake Shelton Hosts SNL: What Were the Best and Worst Sketches?

24 January 2015 10:35 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Blake Shelton has been the breakout comedic star of The Voice since its premiere in April 2011, and yet it’s taken ’til January 2015 for him to land a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live? (Whoever’s in charge of cross-promotional synergy at NBC has clearly been in a professional freefall since the demise of Law & Order: La.)

Better late than never, though, I suppose. The country music star proved an absolutely terrific choice of emcee — scoring laughs in a wide range of scenarios and not relying on cue cards nearly as much as you’d expect for a neophyte. I »
