Disney Channel Begins Casting on ‘High School Musical 4’
Disney Channel is getting back into the game with “High School Musical,” officially starting casting today on Disney Channel Original Movie “High School Musical 4,” Variety has learned.

Coming 10 years after “High School Musical” premiered, “High School Musical 4,” which is in development, will introduce a new cast of characters and actors to a new generation. The potential movie is described as continuing the story of “High School Musical,” while introducing new East High Wildcats and their cross-town school rivals, the West High Knights.

High School Musical 4” was first announced back in 2009. Now with casting beginning, Jeffrey Hornaday, who directed the kids’ cabler’s “Teen Beach Movie” and “Teen Beach 2,” is still attached to direct and choreograph, should the telepic be greenlit — which is likely, given the huge success of the pop culture juggernaut.

Disney Channel Goes Bad with ‘Descendants’ Telepic
High School Musical” helmer Kenny Ortega is back in biz with the Disney Channel, directing a telepic revolving around the children of notable Mouse House villains.

“Descendants” is set to begin production in the spring for a 2015 bow. Script was written by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (“The Starter Wife”).

Project is in keeping with Disney’s efforts to comb its archives for characters and concepts. “Descendants” plot revolves around the offspring of Disney heroes (King and Queen from “Beauty and the Beast,” Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Mulan, etc.) as well as the trouble-making kids of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar.

Casting Directors Confirmed for 4 ABC TV Pilots

As pilot season continues, casting directors have been hired for four recently-announced ABC television pilots, including two dramas and two comedies, Backstage has confirmed.“Doubt,” a legal drama pilot from “House” creator David Shore, follows a former cop who now uses his street smarts to help his clients as a cunning but low-rent lawyer, while also trying to win back his ex-wife. Casting director Liz Dean of Ulrich/Dawson/Kritzer (Udk) Casting will cast the pilot, which has not confirmed production dates or location. Dean’s TV credits include “Rizzoli & Isles,” “Nip/Tuck,” and the pilot episode of the new NBC series “Do No Harm.”A second drama pilot, “Influence,” will be cast by Jason La Padura and Natalie Hart. The project is about two brothers—one a bipolar genius psychologist, the other an ex-con—who lead an agency that solves its clients’ problems through the science of motivation and manipulation.
