Did ‘Ghostbusters’ Open at the Box Office? Or Disappoint?

18 July 2016 5:31 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Read the reports on the weekend box office and you might wind up scratching your head about the performance of Sony’s female “Ghostbusters” reboot.

Did it “fail” to unseat “The Secret Life of Pets” in first place? Yes. But opening at number one doesn’t necessarily guarantee a hit.

Was it strong enough to jump-start a long-dormant possible franchise? Sony is weaker in franchise depth than other studios and needed this Amy Pascal-produced flick to thrive. According to distribution chief Rory Bruer, the likelihood of a sequel is strong.

Box office success is measured by cost vs. return, expectations vs. reality, and last year’s record numbers vs. a weak summer 2016. Few summer 2016 releases grabbed more advance attention. During this feast-or-famine season, the mid-range initial “Ghostbusters” performance is far from great, but mainly positive. Word of mouth could drive more attendance.

Trailing closely behind was Finding Dory, which had spent the prior four weeks on top. The Pixar film tumbled 53 per cent over the weekend to fetch just under $2.4 million, bringing its cume to a whopping $45 million.

The Bfg, now in its third week, also took a fall, dropping 43 per cent to take in $1.9 million from weekend screenings. The Spielberg film has made $12.3 million so far.

Central Intelligence, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, fell 47 per cent over the weekend, pulling in $1.7 million. The action comedy, showing on 230 screens, has grossed $13.2 million in three weeks.

Weekend Box Office Top 10 Takeaways: ‘Ghostbusters’ Makes Mid-Range Landing

17 July 2016 2:20 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Few summer 2016 releases have grabbed more advance attention that Sony’s female “Ghostbusters” reboot. During this feast-or-famine summer, its modest initial performance is far from great, but mainly positive.

For one thing, “Ghostbusters” failed to unseat top-grossing animated film “The Secret Life of Pets” as #1. The superlatives for the animated family genre continue unabated.

The weekend brought few new releases, another reason grosses fell short of the same weekend last summer.

But more strong openers are coming, including “Star Trek Beyond” and “Suicide Squad” is guaranteed to soar). But the ongoing uncertainty continues.

Secret Life of Pets Beats Ghostbusters at the Box Office

17 July 2016 1:28 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Heading into this weekend at the box office, it was expected to be a very close race between last weekend's winner The Secret Life of Pets and Sony Pictures' Ghostbusters reboot. As it turned out, both movies came in a bit under their weekend projections, but it still remained a close race, with The Secret Life of Pets coming out on top with $50.5 million in its second weekend in theaters. Ghostbusters wasn't too far behind, though, with a solid opening weekend of $46 million.

We were predicting that Secret Life of Pets will drop 40%, which would would put its second weekend total at $62.5 million, since most animated movies don't drop as much as other summer blockbusters. Box Office Mojo reports that The Secret Life of Pets dropped 51.5% with a healthy $11,541 per-screen average. This animated comedy has now taken in an impressive $203.1 million domestically and another $50.8 million internationally for a worldwide total of $253.9 million. »

In a relatively short period of time, Dwayne Johnson went from being just another wrestler who was trying to make some extra money as a movie star, to one of the most prolific movie stars on the planet. It looks like all of that hard work has paid off. According to a new report, it looks like The Rock is now the highest paid actor in all of Hollywood for 2016.

According to Forbes, who just published their new Celebrity 100 list for 2016, Johnson made $64.5 million this year, making him the highest paid actor on the list. Ever suspected Frozen was more than a simple singalong? Have the false promises of Emerald City ever rung alarm bells? Here are nine family flicks that have been mined for underlying meaning

Thought the current box office smash was just Toy Story with poodles and hamsters? Think again. A prominent political science professor suggests Chris Renaud’s movie is in fact a hamfisted metaphor for racial oppression. With his cri de coeur of “revolution forever, domestication never”, angry rabbit Snowball (Kevin Hart) isn’t just moaning about being kicked out of a warm, cosy cage to roam the streets. Look closely and – maybe – you’ll find a raging furnace of fury centred on the mistreatment of African-Americans by mainstream white society.

Will Ghostbusters Win Big or Crash and Burn at the Box Office?

12 July 2016 9:51 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After a lackluster 4th of July holiday at the box office, Universal's animated comedy The Secret Life of Pets breathed new life into the sagging summer season last weekend with a whopping $104.3 million. This surprise hit will face two newcomers this Friday, Sony's Ghostbusters reboot and Broad Green Pictures' The Infiltrator, starring Bryan Cranston. If our predictions are accurate, it should be a close call at the box office, with Ghostbusters just barely beating out The Secret Life of Pets with $64 million.

Animated films don't normally suffer huge drops like many summer blockbusters, so we're predicting that Secret Life of Pets will drop 40%, which would would put its second weekend total at $62.5 million. Of course, with the top two so close together, it could very well turn out the other way around, with The Secret Life of Pets repeating atop the box office, so we'll have to wait and see. »

Box Office Democracy: The Secret Life of Pets

12 July 2016 1:00 AM, PDT | | See recent Comicmix news »

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how at this point in my life I’m through being cool.

I’m 32 years old, I’m engaged to the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with, and I just closed on a house. I don’t need to do things anymore because I think they make me look cool. I’m going to use clip-on sunglasses, wear flip-flops despite my giant feet looking goofy in them, and I’ll wear shorts after dark if it’s a warm evening and I feel like it. If something I like happens to be cool then that’s a great coincidence, but otherwise I’m willing to wear wrestling shirts and play needlessly complicated board games.

By the same token I’m willing to say that I wholeheartedly enjoyed The Secret Life of Pets despite it being a bit shallow from a narrative perspective, »

Top 10 Box Office Takeaways: Animation Rules as ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ Soars to Record Heights

10 July 2016 2:01 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The twisty summer of 2016 is taking some surprising turns. Unexpectedly, the most recent new animated film, Universal/Illumination’s “The Secret Life of Pets,” topped $100 million for the weekend. That makes it the biggest ever opening for an original animated feature. It’s not quite the level Pixar sequel “Finding Dory” reached three weeks ago (the year’s highest-grosser is one of Disney’s biggest cartoon features), but its achievement is incredible. This one movie could make the summer box office, with some promising films still to come, not fall off as steeply from 2015.

The other opener, comedy “Mike and Dave’s Wedding Date” (Twentieth Century Fox) did about a sixth as well, about where it was expected. There is always room for comedy in the market, especially when the public could use a diversion. But that need is better served at the moment by the significantly more successful “Central Intelligence »
