Marisa Tomei on Playing Aunt May in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ Sequels and Hollywood Sexism

After one Oscar win, two nominations, and roles in more than 60 movies, Marisa Tomei needs no introduction. Yet playing Aunt May in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” has changed the energy around her. She noticed it on the day of her interview with Variety when a disdainful contractor in her Manhattan building in the West Village suddenly offered a welcoming smile. “He pulled out a picture for me to sign for his son,” Tomei recalled, with a laugh.

With nearly $500 million in box office receipts worldwide, “Spider-Man” is one of the biggest hits of the year. The reboot of the comic-book series features Tom Holland as a high-school web slinger. And his Aunt May is hipper, too, than the version played by Rosemary Harris in the 2002 tentpole. Tomei spoke to Variety about not watching other “Spider-Men” films and how she found the character.

I think the most gratifying has been the reaction »

Henry Bevan binge-watches the Spider-Man movie series…

Inspired by our viewing of Spider-Man: Homecoming, a film this website called “the best Spider-Man movie to date” and “another hit for the carefully crafted McU“, a mate and I decided we should binge watch the previous five movies. While I’m personally conflicted about my favourite superhero’s latest outing (more on that later), it has made me excited about this trip down film history.

So, be prepared for some tired and probably drunken thoughts on the old wall-crawler. As Hemmingway always said, people should write when they’re drunk; let’s see if he was onto something.

Spider-Man

For a film often described as kickstarting the modern superhero trend, it’s amazing how it bears little resemblance to today’s output. There is no snarky self-reflectiveness or even an attempt at grounding Spider-Man’s heroics. Sam Raimi masterfully blends fantasy and reality, »

19 Reasons the New Spider-Man Movie Will Be Unlike Anything You've Seen Before

19 June 2017 2:30 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Like many other superhero movie fans out there, I suffer from a serious, life-altering condition known as Spider-Man Fatigue (Smf). I'm a fan of the early-2000s franchise starring Tobey Maguire, and I willingly sat through Andrew Garfield's take on Peter Parker in 2012 and 2014. But when I heard Marvel and Sony had combined forces to tell a new version of the young web-slinger's story for a third time, I audibly groaned. Another one? Seriously? Then, I saw Captain America: Civil War. This Spider-Man, played by 20-year-old British rising star Tom Holland, is only in the movie briefly but seems immediately lighter and funnier; he meshes perfectly with Tony Stark and the rest of the gang. Could it be? Could Marvel have finally found a way to stop my skeptical eyes from rolling at each mention of a new installment to his story? To figure out, once and for all, »
