The films of Michael Mann
Photo: Universal Pictures Ranking the Films of Michael Mann In advance of this Wednesday's release of Public Enemies I thought it was only fitting to take a look back at the films from director Michael Mann and see how they would sort themselves out in a quick ranking session and what a wild last few days it has been. On Thursday, last week, I saw Public Enemies, later that night I watched Manhunter, the next day I watched Thief and The Last of the Mohicans -- then the weekend arrived. In a matter of 48 hours I watched Heat, The Insider, Ali, Miami Vice and Collateral all in an attempt to make sure my mind was completely refreshed and ready to sort things out. You will notice I am only ranking nine films since I have never seen The Keep (1983) and it wasn't available through Netflix

I've never read Laurence Sterne's "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman," and apparently, that's no small feat anyhow. After all, Sterne's protagonist starts out just before his birth and spends his time describing so many tangents of his existence that the book ends by the time his life has barely begun.
But I was delighted by the approach with which director Michael Winterbottom and writer Frank Cottrell Boyce adapted the seemingly unfilmable novel -- by making a movie about making the movie, which itself never quite gets around to unfolding. Steve Coogan plays a version of himself who's trying to keep his supporting actor/co-lead down and his girlfriend and newborn happy, in addition to juggling the production and the press and the pressures that come with the shoot as a whole.
It's all so delightfully twisty and sly, and I suspect that it's very much keeping in spirit with Sterne's work.

You know what would have been an even better poster for “Ninja Assassin”? If Rain, the star of James McTeigue’s modern-day ninja movie was actually falling in the poster, while it’s raining. Then my headline of, “Rain Falls in Ninja Assassin Teaser Poster” would be double — nay, triple! — clever. But alas, it’s just South Korean pop star and soon-to-be-International action hero Rain standing in the rain all covered in rain and blood and holding weapons. Still cool, though, but it would be cooler if he was falling, too. Sigh. What could have been… Ninja Assassin follows Raizo (Rain), one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo

Waaaay back in May of last year I revealed the plot synopsis for the Wachowski Brothers-produced Ninja Assassin, now a full year on - we have a poster!
The film has seemingly been laying low since it's announcement, hidden like the very ninjas it brings to the screen. The poster is a very slick image of the film's protagonist Raizo (Rain). The poster premiered on Italian film site screenWEEK.it, and can be seen after the jump:
Ninja Assassin is directed by James McTeigue, stars Rain, Naomie Harris and Ben Miles and is due out in theatres in the Us on 25th November and UK on 27th November.
Oh what the hell, have two behind the scenes featurettes too:
Source: ScreenWEEK, thanks to Latino Review for the heads up!

Ninja Assassin! Just the title sounds cool. Directed by James McTeigue and starring Rain, the actioner has been given its first poster.

Raizo (Rain) is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them...and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge. In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders. Her investigation makes her a target,

This poster first came to my attention via Slash Film and then I was directed to where it supposedly originally came from over at SCREENWeek so by mentioning both and linking to both I feel I have covered my sourcing bases as I bring you the first poster for Ninja Assassin James McTeigue's follow-up to V for Vendetta due out on November 25. Considering the nature of the poster I can say the film ironically stars Korean popstar Rain as Raizo one of the deadliest assassins in the world. After some issues with the secret society known as the Ozunu Clan he breaks free and plots his revenge. The film also stars Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Sho Kosugi and Rick Yune. Photo: Warner Bros.

28 Days Later… 2002, UK Directed by Danny Boyle Written by Alex Garland Starring Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Noah Huntley, Christopher Eccleston, Brendan Gleeson The more times I see this film, the better it gets. This may, however, be because it’s made up of three better movies, The Omega Man, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead, split up exactly along act breaks. The horror genre, however, thrives on homage, which is a legal term meaning ‘please don’t sue me; it’s a tribute’. But bizarrely enough, in the hands of chameleon director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), the film rises above its blatant rip-offs and becomes much more than the sum of its parts. Hell, it even ripped off its title from the Sandra Bullock movie 28 Days, and it still works. 28 Days Later stars the dead-eyed Cillian Murphy and the always-affable Brendan Gleeson, who seems like the

Director Mat Whitecross has lined up one hell of a fantastic British cast for Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, his in-development biopic about punk legend Ian Dury. Naomie Harris, Ray Winstone, Olivia Williams, Noel Clarke, Toby Jones, MacKenzie Crook and Bill Milner have all signed on to star in the film opposite Andy Serkis, who plays the polio-afflicted frontman. Whitecross is gearing up to start shooting in London on May 3rd. The script was written by actor Paul Viragh and the project is being produced by Damian Jones. While I don't know much about Ian Dury, this sounds like a great project to keep our eye on as it develops. Dury was the lead singer of the British band Ian Dury and the Blockheads, who, with other bands like the Talking Heads, ushered in the New Wave era in the late 1970s. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1996 ...

Judging from the number of people who continue to post in our “28 Months Later” (the tentative (re: guesstimate) title for the third “28 Days Later” movie) articles, Danny Boyle’s infected world is still very popular with the kids. Comic book publisher Boom Studios and movie guys Fox Atomic apparently know that, too, and they’ve teamed up to give fans of the franchise a fresh batch of “28″ stories — via a new comic book series. According to the Boom! Studios press release announcing the new comic book series, the first story arc of the series will follow the female lead from “28 Days Later”, Selena (played by Naomie Harris) as she attempts to survive the initial plague outbreak. It will also bridge the first movie with the start of the second movie, “28 Weeks Later”. The PR release promises that “key questions” from the movies will be answered, including, one presumes, what happened to Selena and Jim.

The film also stars Paul Dano, Naomie Harris (“Pirates of the Caribbean”), Lou Taylor Pucci (“Thumbsucker”), Frankie Shaw, Tariq Trotter of The Roots, and introduces Francisco Burgos. Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Explicit Ills, a film which has taken home at least two Audience Awards (SXSW, Gen Art Chicago) during its festival run in 2008. And when a film snags more than one Audience Award, that means audiences kinda dig it, like, a lot. Featuring the directorial debut of actor-turned-filmmaker Mark Webber, Explicit Ills stars Rosario Dawson, Paul Dano, Naomie Harris and Lou Taylor Pucci, among others.
From Scott's positive SXSW review: "Brief, honest, and admirably to-the-point, Explicit Ills follows a group of seemingly unrelated South Philadelphia folks who try to lead normal, happy, anonymous lives -- but their station on the lower rung of the income scale means that even the most basic requirements remain frustratingly out-of-reach." It's a pretty impressive debut for Webber as writer-director, and a film that will unfortunately hit home for a lot of folks during these tough economic times.
