Norman Lear Reviving ‘One Day at a Time’ with Cuban-American Spin at Netflix, Rita Moreno to Co-Star

Netflix has nabbed the “One Day at a Time” reboot from exec producer Norman Lear, Variety has learned. Rita Moreno is the first star to be cast.

Before landing at the streaming giant, the revival of the 1970’s-’80s family sitcom had been in the works for quite some time, and Lear has spoken about developing the project over the past year.

Described as a reimagining of the classic, the modernized multi-camera comedy will center around a Cuban-American family. The heroine is a recently separated, former military mom navigating a new single life while raising her radical teenage daughter and socially adept tween son with the help of her old-school Cuban-born mom (played by Moreno) and a friends-without-benefits building manager named Schneider.

With Thursday’s news that Pat Harrington Jr. — best known as cocky superintendent Dwayne Schneider on the CBS sitcom “One Day at a Time” — died Wednesday at age 86, friends, castmates and colleagues of the actor posted their condolences and tributes. “He always made me laugh,” wrote Valerie Bertinelli, who played Barbara Cooper on the series, wrote. Norman Lear, who developed the series, noted that Harrington died on the birthday of his castmate Bonnie Franklin, who played matriarch Ann Romano on the series. Pat Harrington, Jr., has passed away at the age of 86. According to a public post on daughter Tresa's Facebook account, Harrington died Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at 11:09pm Pt, with his loved ones at his side. Long-time co-star, the late Bonnie Franklin, was born on January 6, 1944.

Best known as One Day at a Time building super, Dwayne Schneider, Harrington made his last on-screen appearance on former co-star Valerie Bertinelli's Hot in Cleveland TV series, which recently ended after six seasons. His guest turn in Hot in Cleveland's fourth season's episode four, "GILFs," was a callback to their old series, with Harrington playing an apartment manager.

Sad news for classic TV fans and animation enthusiasts. Pat Harrington Jr. has passed away at the age of 86. The comedian and voice-over actor was best known as the handyman Schneider on the classic 70s sitcom One Day at a Time. He even won an Emmy for his work on the show. He died Wednesday night, it was announced by his daughter. This happened two months after she announced that he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and that his health was deteriorating. Phil Brock of the Studio Talent Group had this to say in a statement.

"We have all lost a gracious human being who will always be remembered for his portrayals of the human condition. Pat had the ability to bring laughter and kindness to any role. Pat Harrington Jr., best known for his role as the seedy super on “One Day at a Time,” died Wednesday night in Los Angeles. He was 86.

His daughter, Tresa Harrington, announced the news Thursday on her Facebook page. She did not reveal the cause of death, but wrote in November that her father’s health was rapidly deteriorating after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

“My heart is broken to pieces and I will cry and cry until I just won’t,” she said in the post.

Harrington won a Golden Globe (in 1981) and an Emmy (in 1984) for playing building superintendent Dwayne Schneider on the groundbreaking CBS sitcom, which aired from 1975 to 1984. The show starred Bonnie Franklin as an single mom struggling to raise two daughters (played by Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli).
