The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Written by Ol Parker

Directed by John Madden

UK | USA, 2015

There are hints of understated charm and elegance sprinkled throughout The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Moments when two people, battered and bruised by life, share some genuine insight about the human condition. Unfortunately, those moments are lost amid a frenzy of unnecessary storylines and cartoonish complications. It’s a treat to see these veteran actors playing off each other, but you’re better off staying at a different hotel.

The sequel to 2011’s geriatric comedy hit, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, finds most of the cast returning for a second lash. This time out, the owner of the Marigold, Sonny (Dev Patel), is determined to secure financing for a second hotel so he can start a franchise of senior-living homes. Together with the gruff but lovable Muriel (Maggie Smith), Sonny finds a potential buyer, »

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – The Review

5 March 2015 3:34 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

I know what you may be thinking. “Another weekend, another movie sequel”. Well yes, we do have a follow-up flick in this weekend’s new release batch, but this is a bit different from the escalating, Roman numeral-added blockbuster franchises. The original from 2011, wasn’t a big stunt-filled action flick. Nor was it a crude. lewd lowbrow comedy. It was a modest success that spoke to a nearly neglected audience. This was that rare feature that mainly concerned the senior set, and boasted an almost “Avengers-like” teaming of British cinema and stage actors. That first pairing didn’t conclude on a “cliffhanger”, but many fans would relish the chance to see what happened to their new film friends. After nearly four years, they’re getting that chance to catch-up. For the price of a movie ticket they can reserve a suite at The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Checking in? In these new videos from a press junket for John Madden's "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," the stars of the film sat down to share their insight on what it was like making the film, working with Madden, their characters and the new cast members.  "I don't think I remember saying 'yes' or 'no' to John Madden, I think it was taken as 'yes' straight away when the second one was mooted. And that was probably the same for all of us," Dame Judi Dench shared in her interview, among other details about filming the second installment. The actors also talked about how their characters grow in the second film, including Lillete Dubey, who talked about her character Mrs. Kapoor's newfound vulnerability  and softness, and Tina Desai, who spoke of the expansion of her role as Sunaina. As I put it in my video review above, the movie business’ favorite set of geezers are back and in fine form in the sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Returning from the 2011 hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are such stalwarts as Judi Dench, Maggie Smith (now playing co-manager of the hotel), Bill Nighy and Dev Patel, along with Tina Desai, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle and Celia Imrie. Also checking in are Tamsin Greig and, in a bit of a surprise but a… »

The First Best Loser: Madden’s Wholly Unnecessary Sequel an Exercise in Nothingness

Pandering is the word that best describes the tone of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden’s follow-up to the 2011 surprise hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Whereas the first film was adapted from the bestselling novel by Deborah Moggach, screenwriter Ol Parker is left to his own sugary devices with this next chapter, volleying most of the respectable returning cast members through a series of utterly vapid subplots that are either forgettable or just plain embarrassing considering the seasoned talents. Some may argue that the chance to see so many exemplary performers of a certain age in a film that will reach mainstream platforms should be appreciated for merely existing, but that’s no excuse for doffing us with such second rate material.

Many of the mainstays from the last film have stuck around »

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel review: 'Wish fulfilment for retirees'

25 February 2015 9:00 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: John Madden; Screenwriters: John N Glenn Ficarra, John Requa; Starring: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Richard Gere, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Tamsin Greig, David Strathairn, Tina Desai; Running time: 121 mins; Certificate: 12

Although the title suggests it's not quite as good as the first film, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a worthy successor to the 2011 sleeper hit, characterised by the same gentle humour, sunny outlook and slightly doddering plot. Again, it's the talented cast of veterans – Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Celia Imrie among them – who bring the required grace, style and finesse, ably supported by new residents Tamsin Greig and silver fox Richard Gere.

In case the pace gets too leisurely, Dev Patel is always on hand like a shot of epinephrine, bouncing off the walls as Jaipur entrepreneur Sonny who is courting an American firm to bankroll plans for the titular second hotel. »

Synopsis: Sonny (Patel) looks to expand his business by trying to lock down a second site for another hotel, while also planning his wedding. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel once again traverse the world of love in their advanced years.

There are some films that are geared towards specific demographics. It doesn’t mean others can’t enjoy said film, it just means that they have been manufactured with a clear and defined selling point. Such films can be stale and bland, but when they are aimed at a smaller demographic not usually catered for, then it’s kind of hard to begrudge their existence. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Movie Review

22 February 2015 1:04 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

A sequel and continuation from the fun and frolics of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a film set to entertain.

Unfortunately, that’s about it.

Let’s begin with the plot. Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) and Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith) are the co-managers of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” in Jaipur, India. Their hotel is unique as it serves as a special retirement/finding yourself sanctuary. The two co-managers have the ambition to expand, an ambition met with hoops to jump through. Pivotal to the story is Sonny’s wedding to Sunaina (Tina Desai). A wedding comes armed with beautiful clothes, lots of dancing and oh yes – high octane drama. From the beginning, jealousy and insecurity are the driving force in most of the relationships, indeed interesting areas to explore.

Nonetheless, the film is left half-baked, without spark. This is disappointing as the concepts portrayed are powerful, »

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Royal World Premiere, Leicester Square, London

19 February 2015 12:00 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

On a mid February evening, Leicester Square was draped in pink and orange, the colours of Rajasthan. Although the heat of Rajasthan was certainly absent, with the London air becoming increasingly biting, one could have been stood in India at a wedding.

The air heavy with Bhangra and Bollywood beats, archways protruding with colourful marigold flowers, it was time to celebrate the world premiere of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel!

The evening was one full of fun and celebration.

Karan’s Bollywood Masterclass (Kbm) built up the anticipation and entertained the public waiting with their slick Bollywood moves to beats such as Taal, Nagara Sang Dhol and Malang.

Gracing the orange carpet were the cast and crew of the film including Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Tina Desai, Lillete Dubey, Diana Hardcastle, Shazad Latif, director John Madden, writer Ol Parker and producer Graham Broadbent. »

Film Review: ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’

17 February 2015 3:59 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Roughly midway through “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” a lovesick Bill Nighy notes that Judi Dench’s character has “checked out,” referring of course to her status at the hotel. Still, the pun hangs in the air, suggesting a possible euphemism for a more permanent condition. The imminence of death serves as a source of both comedy and poignant self-reflection in this spirited sequel to the unexpected 2012 success, assembled hastily enough that none of its ensemble had a chance to “check out” before they could all cash in, hoping to duplicate the original’s $46 million haul (nearly twice as much abroad).

If the first “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was all about seeking rest and relaxation half a world away in India, then its relatively hectic successor finds the entire ensemble hustling jobs in Jaipur: Douglas (Nighy) gives tours of sites about which he knows precious little; Madge (Celia Imrie »
