Movie Review – The Boy (2016)

24 January 2016 9:40 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Boy, 2016.

Directed by William Brent Bell.

Starring Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans, Jim Norton, Diana Hardcastle, and Ben Robson.

Synopsis:

An American nanny is shocked that her new English family’s boy is actually a life-sized doll. After violating a list of strict rules, disturbing events make her believe that the doll is really alive.

From the director of The Devil Inside (one of the worst movies of 2012) comes The Boy, sure to be one of the worst movies of 2016 when all is said and done. It never once makes its premise anything less than ridiculous, ensuring that you are only laughing at it, instead of being compelled by the mystery surrounding the porcelain child doll.

From the very beginning, the shockingly bad script forces upon Greta (The Walking Dead‘s Lauren Cohan) an onslaught of illogical reasons for her to stick around the gothic residence located in an isolated English village, »

'Batman v Superman' Adds 'Walking Dead' Star Lauren Cohan as Martha Wayne

22 January 2016 6:59 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With just over two months left until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters, we're learning new bits and pieces about the cast and the story every day. Earlier today, the IMDb Twitter feed revealed that The Walking Dead star Lauren Cohan has been added to the cast list, with the site revealing that she will play none other than Martha Wayne, Bruce Wayne's mother. In related news, a new video for this highly-anticipated superhero adventure has debuted at the film's official website.

It isn't known how significant a role Lauren Cohan has as Martha Wayne, but it has long been speculated that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will have a flashback scene featuring the death of Bruce Wayne's parents. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has already been confirmed to play Bruce's father, Thomas Wayne, which is ironic since the actor will be joining The Walking Dead at the end of this current season, »

Stx Entertainment served up their new horror/thriller movie, "The Boy," into theaters today, January 22nd, 2016, and we've got some reviews in from a couple of the major, top movie critics in the biz, and it's not such great news. Although, I have seen worse. They gave it some 40 and 50 grades out of a possible 100 at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Ben Robson, Diana Hardcastle, James Russell, Jim Norton, Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans. We've added statements from the scarce, 2 critics that managed to give it a look-see. Katie Rife over at The A.V. Club, gave it a just average 50 grade, claiming: "At least, maybe The Boy can lead some novices to better, more original horror movies." Then Joe Leydon over at Variety, gave it a 40 grade. He stated: "Despite the assiduous grinding of plot mechanics by William Brent Bell (“The Devil Inside”) and scripter Stacey Menear, »

Film Review: ‘The Boy’

21 January 2016 4:43 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

While it’s arguable that their performances are not quite Oscar-caliber, the lead players in “The Boy” nonetheless merit kudos of some sort simply for maintaining straight faces while muddling through the absurdities of this tepid horror opus. Despite the assiduous grinding of plot mechanics by William Brent Bell (“The Devil Inside”) and scripter Stacey Menear, the movie never fully distracts its audience from the inherent silliness of its premise — a young woman is hired by an elderly couple as a nanny for a life-sized doll — and, as a result, is more likely to elicit laughs and rude remarks rather than screams and rooting interest. Still, a respectable opening-weekend gross is possible, given the current lack of similar product in the megaplex marketplace.

Can 'The 5th Wave' Take Down 'Ride Along 2' at the Box Office?

19 January 2016 11:50 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last weekend, the mighty Star Wars: The Force Awakens was finally dethroned by Ride Along 2, after four straight weeks of box office. While it certainly seems that its days at the top of the box office heap are over, the film still had the widest release of any movie last weekend, even after shedding more than 300 theaters in its fifth weekend, a trend which will continue into its sixth. Still, even if it posts another minimal decrease this weekend, it won't regain the top spot for the weekend of January 22, with Ride Along 2 most likely set to stay on top, according to projections from Pro.BoxOffice.com.

Ride Along 2 faces three new movies this weekend, Sony's sci-fi action drama The 5th Wave, Lionsgate's R-rated comedy Dirty Grandpa and Stx Entertainment's horror-thriller The Boy, none of which are expected to take down Ride Along 2. After a healthy $35.2 million debut, Ride Along »
