Tony awards 2012: what we learned from the nominations

2 May 2012 3:57 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

James Corden's comedy versus Philip Seymour Hoffman's tragedy, Seminar and Alan Rickman left out, but Spider-Man and James Earl Jones left in. Has Tony got it right?

Predictably (for a somewhat predictable season) the Tony nominations announced yesterday invite tea-leaf reading and pseudo-scientific analysis: X was nominated because Y opened too early in the season; Z really deserved the nod a decade ago, so the nomination is a consolation prize, and so forth. Perhaps a little mind-reading is justified, but the truth is probably more banal: extremely close calls and pure laziness or ignorance, not to mention snobbish backlash (see Rebeck, Theresa, below). Nonetheless, here are some things we learned from the nominations …

Maybe Leap of Faith doesn't suck so hard

'Once' the Musical Tops Tony Award Nominations with 11. Which Other Offbeat Indie Hits Would Thrive on Broadway?

1 May 2012 12:54 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Nominations for the 2012 Tony Awards were announced this morning in New York City. Once, the musical based on the wistful indie romance, leads all shows with 11 noms in assorted categories including Best Musical, Best Actress (Cristin Milioti) and Best Actor (Steve Kazee).    Now, be honest and raise your hand if you even knew there was a musical based on Once, John Carney’s 2006 Oscar winner (for Best Original Song) that charmed audiences and critics alike. Because I had no idea such a show existed, let along that it could dominate the Tony Award nominations like it just did.   The original film starred real-life couple Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová as star-crossed lovers whose fleeting relationship is tested by assorted...

Tony nominations spread out but 'Once' leads

1 May 2012 11:56 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

The low-tech musical "Once," based on the love story of a Czech flower seller and an Irish street musician in Dublin, received a leading 11 Tony Award nominations Tuesday, proving sentiment can sway nominators just as much as special effects.

Two other musicals - "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" - each got 10 nominations as the Tony committee spread the wealth across 30 of 37 eligible shows. Unlike last year's "The Book of Mormon," no monster single hit dominated the nominations.

"Once," with songs by Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard, was originally a low-budget movie made for about $150,000. The film earned $20 million, thanks in part to an original score that included the sublime, 2007 Oscar-winning song, "Falling Slowly." The musical is a study in how to beautifully adapt a movie to the stage.

Theater Community Petitions Drama Desk’s Omission of Orchestrations

The Drama Desk Award nominations, announced Friday, are causing some drama of their own. After inexplicably not including the Outstanding Orchestrations category in this year’s awards – the press release says, “The Board also decided to eliminate the category of Orchestrations” - the Drama Desk board has ruffled more than a few industry feathers.Drama Desk and Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown took to his blog to register his outrage. Calling on this year’s nominated composers - Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová (“Once”), Michael John Lachiusa (“Queen of the Mist”), Alan Menken (“Leap of Faith” and “Newsies The Musical”), Frank Wildhorn (“Bonnie & Clyde”), and Maury Yeston (“Death Takes a Holiday”) - to boycott the awards on June 3, Brown wrote: “I think it's the duty of those writers to support the orchestrators who have served them so valiantly and brilliantly this season and throughout their careers. Florence + the Machine Delivers 'Snow White & the Huntsman' Song

26 April 2012 9:50 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Sometimes, I'm somewhat annoyed with the artists chosen to contribute songs to film soundtracks. For example, if you haven't already heard, Will Smith will not be doing the traditional theme song for Men in Black III and the responsibilities have instead been handed over to Pitbull, who made a dreadful song called Back in Time (I dare you to listen to the whole thing here). But Taylor Swift crafted an awesome song for The Hunger Games (which has one hell of a soundtrack including Once musician Glen Hansard) and now Florence + the Machine have a song for the Snow White and the Huntsman soundtrack. Listen! Florence + the Machine's Breath of Life from Snow White and the Huntsman (via The Playlist): In this new epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the Evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) out to destroy her. »

'The Five-Year Engagement' Ep Shows Off Love For Van Morrison & Pedro Almodóvar Films

19 April 2012 9:18 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Alright, you hopefully read our Tribeca Film Festival review of Nicholas Stoller's "The Five Year Engagement" this morning. We hear that It's a sweet and funny comedy that veers off in tangents, but fortunately, it never loses its way.

Hot on its heels comes the info of the accompanying soundtrack Ep, a brief five-song set with some interesting and comical connections. For music-heads that like their swooning, bittersweet and soulful pop songs comes the reveal of a few Van Morrison songs: "Crazy Love," performed by Audra Mae, another cover of "Into The Mystic" done by The Swell Season (the musical duo from the film "Once") and "When The Evening Sun Goes Down" by Brett Dennen. We hear there's a least one actual Van Morrison song featured in the film as well.

Rather hilariously (and this writer assumes this is a minor comedic spoiler so watch out), the opening track »

Academy Award winner Glen Hansard will release his first solo album, “Rhythm and Repose,” June 19. The Irish singer/songwriter’s Anti-Records set will be his first full album of new material since 2009’s “Strict Joy,” with his band The Swell Season, but he’s hardly been silent the past three years. Hansard has two songs on “The Hunger Games” soundtrack, which debuted a No. 1 on the Billboard 200 two weeks ago: He performs “Take The Heartland,” while Maroon 5 featuring Rozzi Crane recorded his tune, “Come Away.” Additionally, “Once, The Musical,” based on the film “Once,” opened on Broadway last month. He’ll mark its availability with four—count ’em, four—tour dates, including a stop at the Vic in Chicago June 26. Rhythm And Repose supposedly sprang from Hansard’s stint living in New York City, rather than in his native Ireland, for the past year and a half. 'Once' makes perfect transition from film to Broadway stage

23 March 2012 4:24 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

"Bent" is a delightful story that features an extraordinarily talented cast. Sure, they're the usual triple threats of Broadway -- singers, dancers, actors -- but they're also skilled musicians, who make wonderful music together.

Music is at the heart of this play, which hews close to John Carney's 2006 film. The show opened earlier this week (March 19), and this early in a run people aren't always quite sure what they're walking into. But the moment you enter the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, it's clear. It's like stepping into a Dublin pub.

And that's a grand way to spend an evening.

The unusual pre-show has the musician-actors playing instruments and bartenders pouring $13 beers. The bar is stocked with Paddy and Jameson. The worn linoleum, dim bulbs and cloudy mirrors, better for deep reflection than appearance checks, all help set the scene.

This musical manages to avoid veering off into too whimsical or too predictable territory. »

The Swell Season

Reviewer: James van Maanen

Ratings (out of five): ** 1/2

Among its other accomplishments, the new documentary The Swell Season manages very clearly to differentiate fan bases: that of the fans of the 2006 movie Once (which starred the subjects of this new film: Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová), or the fans of the performers themselves. Fans of the former -- such as myself, who found Once a tiny, no-budget marvel with a lovely story, some wonderful songs and a bittersweet ending about as close to perfection as movies get -- can only feel supremely indebted to John Carney, the writer/director of Once, who, probably more than anyone, brought this film to fruition with his sense of pacing, subtlety and story-telling skills. »

Falling Slowly Against the Grain

Once Bernard Jacobs Theatre, NYC

Adapting movies to stage musicals has become a staple on Broadway. The latest example is Once, based on the well-regarded 2006 low-budget film that had success both at the Sundance Film Festival and with art-house audiences. But Once is not your typical movie turned into a musical. It is an intimate, delicate piece, as opposed to flashy, big-budget musicals such as Sister Act or Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Once has a different feel than those, or almost any other Broadway musical. While I didn't totally respond to its story and its music, it is hard not to admire the musical's warmth, sweetness, and artistry.

I never saw the movie, so I went into Once not fully knowing what to expect. The musical takes place in Dublin; it tells the rather slight story of a down-on-his-luck Irish street musician and the blunt Czech immigrant he meets »

'Hunger Games' Soundtrack Is Lovely, Dark and Deep

20 March 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Way to go, "Twilight" movies. You've made it so that it's no longer okay for films aimed at young adults to churn out soundtracks stocked with cookie-cutter pop bands.

Fortunately, it seems that T. Bone Burnett, the guy behind the soundtrack to the upcoming "The Hunger Games" film, has learned that lesson well. His collection here is eclectic, interesting and full of artists that some of the movie's younger fans will likely not know. It's also excellent and pretty damn dark, which is in keeping with a flick about kids who kill each other for sport.

Country poplet Taylor Swift, who has two songs on the list, has stated that Burnett's goal was to put together a collection that would reflect "what Americana and bluegrass music would turn into in the future." Apparently, the future isn't that creative, because a lot of what's here sounds pretty much like what Americana and bluegrass music is now. »

Theater Reviews: Once Wins Over the Twee-Averse

19 March 2012 2:30 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Once (at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre)We defenders of Once have a lot to answer for. After all, any thinking grown-up can mount a frontal assault on this show, a brazenly twee stage adaptation of the 2006 crypto-movie-musical — itself hardly immune to a critique of half-concealed too-cuteness. Shot guerrilla-style and starring real-life rockmates Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova as down-at-the-heel musicians who meet cute on the street-busker scene in Dublin, Once: The Movie is basically The Blair Witch Project for Youtroubadours — all the old familiar cheese, served in the artfully crumpled newspaper of vérité. Imagine if this same story had been set and shot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, without the accents and the international flavor. It would’ve been deemed insufferable. (And barfed immediately out of American theaters by the very hipsters it was designed to hook, no matter how earwormy its soundtrack.)But that’s exactly why I prefer the clumsier, »
