Our weekly round-up of all the big news stories from the world of movie superheroes…
Having made way for Disney's marketing blitz on The Avengers these past couple of months, Warner Bros. stepped up the promotional campaign for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises in a big way this week, flooding the world wide web with a host of Bat-related goodies. It began with a new theatrical poster, and while this left some fans underwhelmed, the studio more than made amends over the next few days, starting with six character posters showcasing Batman (Christian Bale), Bane (Tom Hardy) and Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), along with a 'secret' Catwoman design that was discovered tucked away on the official website. Of course, this was just the beginning, and soon we had two new TV spots consisting of snippets of previously unseen footage, in addition to a whole raft of images featuring Bruce Wayne / Batman, »

Obviously the BBC is planning a huge event for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and most expect that multiple generations of The Doctor will appear. One that won't is Christopher Eccleston, who left quickly after reviving the franchise. "I know what went on and the people who were involved know what went on. That's good enough for me. My conscience is completely clear."
The UConn hockey team has become the latest to join the You Can Play program from Brian Burke, welcoming Glbt players to their team if they can help the team win. Coach Bruce Marshall says that the videos weren't done to be “a nice beacon for the university.’’ They were the players' idea, and he told them they better be willing to back up their words. They realize that they may get some ribbing over it, but team captain Sean Ambrosie says if they become known »

Now that The Avengers is out of the way, Marvel Studios is pressing ahead with subsequent solo instalments in the Cinematic Universe, beginning with the Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3. With principal photography getting underway this past Wednesday in Wilmington, North Carolina, further casting news has now emerged, starting with confirmation that Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau has closed a deal to reprise his on-screen role as Happy Hogan, joining fellow returnees Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark / Iron Man), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Don Cheadle (Rhodey) and Paul Bettany (voice of Jarvis).
In addition to Favreau, it has also been reported that Ashley Hamilton (Sunset Beach) is in talks to join the cast in the role of Firepower, which Variety describes as “a small part”. Firepower will become the latest villain to feature in the sequel, joining Guy Pearce (Prometheus) as Dr. Aldrich Killian and »

While Marvel’s The Avengers continues to dominate the box office, Iron Man 3 quietly began shooting on Wednesday in Wilmington, North Carolina. This week, the $200 million production was working inside one of Screen Gems’ 10 sound stages, under the psuedonym “Caged Heat,” taking full advantage of a 25% tax credit signed into Nc state law in 2010. Then, later this summer, the production will relocate to China, specifically Hong Kong and Shanghai, as part of Marvel’s co-production partnership with Dmg Entertainment, a Beijing-based production company that serves China’s largest movie studio.
Tax credits and production bases are not the flashy stuff of headlines, but it’s Marvel’s business decisions that are shaping how Iron Man 3 will turn out on May 3, 2013. Avengers dumping cash into the coffers and a generous state incentive meant the budget could be boosted an additional $60 million to its $200 million, according to Latino Review. More »

The Avengers is still raking in millions but Marvel have their eyes on their next installments, namely Iron Man 3 and Thor 2. Small plot details have been circulating for a while now and today we have a few new pieces for our superhero jigsaw.
First up, Thor 2. It’s known that Tom Hiddleston will be returning in some capacity as Loki (most recently seen getting the crap beaten out of him by Hulk) but Casino Royale star Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to join the cast as an unnamed villain. If he’ll steal Loki’s crown as lead bad guy, team up or be completely unconnected is unclear. More news as it comes in.
Meanwhile, Iron Man 3 is also adding a villain to their cast. Ashley Hamilton (star of 1993 canine classic Beethoven’S 2Nd) is rumoured to feature as Firepower. Means nothing to me either so »

Last week, we brought you the news when James Badge Dale (World War Z) joined the cast of director Shane Black‘s forthcoming installment of Marvel Studios‘ wildly successful Iron Man franchise as a villain named Eric Savin, a character from Marvel Comics who was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army that stepped on a landmine, and after being dead for 2.3 minutes is resurrected as the cyborg Coldblood.
Now, Variety reports that Ashley Hamilton (Femme Fatales) is currently in talks to portray the villain Firepower in Iron Man 3, the pilot of an experimental pilotable armored suit for Edwin Cord (the rival businessman of Tony Stark), Jack Taggert eventually uses the suit to battle Iron Man. The trade reports that the character of Firepower is a small role in the film.
As we previously reported, the Extremis story arc penned by Warren Ellis is said to be the template for this film. »

More Iron Man 3 casting news! According to our friends at Latino Review, William Sadler is the most recent name added to the already awesome cast of the Shane Black-directed Marvel film. For those of you not familiar with the name, he's a great character actor that has been in films such as The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Die Hard 2, The Mist and several other movies and TV shows.
Apparently, Sadler showed up for a costume fitting with Guy Pearce. There's no word on who the actor will be playing in the film. But it's speculated that the role will be similar to Pearce's, who plays geneticist Dr. Aldrich Killian. So maybe some kind of scientist?
As of right now Robert Downey Jr., Gweneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau are set to reprise their roles. The movie will also star Ben Kingsley possibly as Mandarin, James Badge Dale »

It seems like the "Iron Man 3" casting department has been awful busy in recent days. In addition to the casting of Ashley Hamilton as Firepower and Jon Favreau returning as Happy Hogan, it looks like there is a third actor who might be coming on board the upcoming Marvel movie.
Latino Review found out that William Sadler has been seen on the film's set recently for a costume fitting. This isn't hard and fast confirmation of his inclusion in the movie, but we can't think of anything else the "Shawshank Redemption" star would be doing in Wilmington on set except for gearing up for a role in "Iron Man 3."
Since his participation is still unofficial, it's unclear whether Sadler would play a villain or ally of Tony Stark. Our hope is for the former, since Iron Man's enemies seem to be swarming around him like flies. In addition to Firepower, »

Perhaps this isn't very surprising, but since actor-director Jon Favreau decided not to return to the director's chair for Iron Man 3 there was some question whether he would reprise his role as Happy Hogan, Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) chauffeur-bodyguard. However, with Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) taking over as director, THR reports Favreau has closed his deal to return as Hogan. Production began on Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C.
Favreau is also returning to produce the movie, something that he made clear more than a week ago, hence the lack of surprise. In a recent interview with THR, Favreau said that he would be "very involved" with Iron Man 3, and was proud to see the franchise "moving forward in a way that re-enforces" the prior Iron Man movies.
Next Showing: Iron Man 3 is scheduled to open May 3, 2013

No, Favreau isn’t going to direct Iron Man 3. Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) has that job. But Favreau has signed on to return as Tony Stark’s bodyguard (and comic relief) Happy Hogan, according to Hollywood Reporter.
To add to the cast, Variety reports that Ashley Hamilton (Sunset Beach) is in talks to play a villainous cyborg Firepower who works for the government. It’s a small role for the son of George Hamilton (and apparent stepson to Rod Stewart), and joins James Badge Dale (The Pacific) who plays Savin, Rebecca Hall in an undisclosed role, and Ben Kingsley (Gandhi) may or may not be the Mandarin. They of course will be joining Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow to round out a pretty sweet cast.
Iron Man 3 will hit theaters May 3rd, 2013 (my sister’s birthday, for those keeping score). »

With The Avengers still breaking every record in the book, Marvel’s already hard at work on their next projects, starting with Iron Man 3. The news dropped yesterday that Jon Favreau would return as Happy Hogan and Ashley Hamilton would join as Jack Taggert. Now, it looks like William Sadler (Die Hard 2, Shawshank Redemption) will be joining Tony Stark’s third outing on screen [Latino Review].
No official word yet on Sadler’s casting or role, but he was seen with Guy Pearce (who will be playing Adrian Killian) in Wilmington, North Carolina during costume fittings so it’s safe to start surmising. Sadler will join an ever-growing cast lead by returners Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, and Favreau. New cast members include Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Andy Lau, and James Badge Dale. Shane Black will direct based off a script co-written by Drew Pearce and, »

Iron Man 3 is quickly assembling a gauntlet of villains for Tony Stark. Sir Ben Kingsley is still rumored to be the lead villain, The Mandarin, but it seems the more, the merrier. The latest addition to the cast comes in the form of George Hamilton's son, Ashley Hamilton, as the villain Firepower. Essentially, Firepower is another guy in a metal suit, but created by Edwin Cord, a rival businessman to the currently environmentally friendly Tony Stark. William Sadler has also joined the cast, although Latino-Review failed to say who he was playing. The site says the actor was present during a costume fitting with Guy Pearce, who is playing scientist Aidan Killain. Jon Favreau will also return in the role of Happy Hogan and as we reported yesterday, the three-quel got a budget...

Filming on Iron Man 3 is already underway in Wilmington, North Carolina, and all the main elements of the cast and crew already in place. You've got Rober Downey Jr. back as Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle back as Pepper Potts and Rhodey, and tons of new additions, from Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce as major villains to Jon Favreau, back on set as just as an actor this time to play Happy Hogan again. But just because production is starting doesn't mean there's no time to make some tweaks, or introduce some actors on the set who hadn't yet been announced. Just yesterday we learned that Ashley Hamilton had signed on to play the villainous Firepower, and now Latino Review is reporting that another character, William Sadler, has been spotted at a costume test on the set as well. You'll recognize him from everything from the recent »

It's especially good news that Happy Hogan is back for "Iron Man 3," because it seems like Tony Stark needs all the allies he can get.
Variety has the news that Ashley Hamilton will play Firepower, another villain in the film. It's said to be a small part, though we know from the comics that Firepower ends up working alongside the Mandarin. That seems to confirm that the Mandarin will play a role in "Iron Man 3" one way or another, though it hasn't been confirmed that he is a part of the movie.
Considering the fact "Iron Man 3" will "borrow elements" from Warren Ellis's six-issue "Iron Man: Extremis," we can assume that the Mandarin will at least have a small role. The Variety story says "Iron Man 3" will focus "on the spread of a virus through nanotechnology," which very likely is their way of referring to the Extremis serum. »

With filming underway for Shane Black and Marvel's Iron Man 3, some more casting additions are being revealed. The latest one is that William Sadler has joined the impressive cast in a mysterious role. From Latino Review: Yesterday, Guy Pearce (who will be playing Aldrich Killian) graced Wilmington for a costume fitting along with a familiar face that is as-yet-unreported. Who was that blond man wandering around the ‘Iron Man 3′ stages? Why it was William Sadler! The report also reveals a little bit more info on the villains, and how exactly will they be portrayed in the film: A movie that had both Coldblood-7, Mandarin And Firepower would be over-packed, so look for James Badge Dale and Ashley Hamilton to be villains, but not in robo-cop and Iron Man suits respectively. Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale and Rebecca Hall, »

More Marvel Villains: Just when you thought Marvel had enough villains to go around, word arrives that the great Mads Mikkelsen (villain in Casino Royale, above) is in talks to play an unidentified villain in Thor 2 and Ashley Hamilton (son of George Hamilton) is in talks to play the villianous Firepower in Iron Man 3. With Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3″ already shooting this Wednesday in North Carolina, there have been a lot of news regarding the film, from the casting of Ashley Hamilton as another villain for ol Shellhead called Firepower, to rumors that Marvel Studios were so psyched about the success of “The Avengers” that they’ve bumped up the film’s budget from $140 million to $200 million. Now, official word has Jon Favreau, who directed the last two “Iron Man” movies and guest-starred as Happy Hogan, Iron Man’s chauffeur and all-purpose butler, will indeed return as the character for the third installment. I guess someone has to drive Tony Stark when he’s not flying around in his superhero garb. This was pretty much a given after Favreau recently let us know that he’s still very much involved in the film’s production, even if he’s not directing anymore. »
