Screen Masculinity

For almost a year, Graffiti with Punctuation editor Blake Howard and I have been discussing doing a series of essays about a topic of mutual interest - portrayals of masculinity on screen. The aim is to explore our favorite elements of the topic, to get quite personal and to come up with something hopefully compelling.

That journey continues today with the second piece by myself, arguably one of the most personal pieces of writing I've ever done for the site and sets a tone for promising reading to come. Fox 2000 has acquired the supernatural psychological thriller "Liminal" with Christopher Landon set to direct. Landon will also write the script based on a story by Adam Robitel. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing. »

Studio 8 Acquires Daily Beast Article ‘Osama’s 11,’ George Mastras to Script

Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 has acquired the rights to the Daily Beast article “Osama’s 11” and set “Breaking Bad” scribe George Mastras to pen the script.

Written by Geoff Manaugh, the article revolves around the true story of a bank robber who, after being arrested for several bank robberies in Los Angeles, was recruited by the U.S. government to plan bank heists against Al Qaeda.

Several studios were in the mix before Studio 8 made the winning bid, which sources say was in the high six figures.

Lloyd Braun and Andrew Mittman will produce through Whalerock Industries along with Dan Halsted and Nate Miller at Manage-mentJon Silk brought the project in and will oversee production.

The property marks another big purchase for Robinov’s relatively new company which is currently in post-production on Albert Hughes adventure pic “The Solutrean.” The studio’s pipeline is beginning to fill »

‘House of Cards’ Promotes Pair as Showrunners For Season 5

House of Cards” has promoted two insiders to take the reins as showrunners for season five from creator Beau Willimon.

Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese will serve as co-showrunners on the next season of the Beltway drama, which is expected to bow in 2017. Season four of the series starring Kevin Spacey as a scheming career politician who winds up in the Oval Office bows March 4.

“I welcome Frank and Melissa in their new roles on ‘House of Cards’ and look forward to collaborating with them and our creative team on season five,“ said Spacey, who is also an exec producer.

Gibson and Pugliese joined the show, produced by Media Rights Capital, in its third season. Willimon last month announced his decision to exit after running the show for four seasons. That news came at the same time Netflix renewed the drama for a fifth season. The fact that Mrc »

ABC Planning A Watergate Thriller Series

ABC is in the early stages of developing a Watergate-themed limited series about Richard Nixon's 1970s White House burglary and subsequent scandal.

Jon Maas ("The Last Debate") is penning the project which is said to have a thriller tone and unfolds the story through the eyes of John Dean, the then-White House counsel for President Nixon. Thinking he's nabbed the job of a lifetime, he soon discovers he's being set up to become the fall guy for the president.

Entertainment One and Storyscape Entertainment will produce with Maas, Bob Cooper, Dan Halsted, Eric Hamburg and Jeff Field serving as executive producers.
