Top 20 Horror Films of 2013

21 December 2013 11:52 PM, PST | MoreHorror | See recent MoreHorror news »

by Seth Metoyer, MoreHorror.com

It's that time of year where horror sites and fans present their Best Horror Films of 2013 lists. For some reason I've typically steered clear of top lists in the past. I think it's mostly because of the constant whining and bellyaching that occurs once lists are released. Plus there will inevitably be good films that didn't make the list. However, mostly it's the constant cries of "That wasn't a horror movie that was a thriller stupid!" or "That movie released last year dummy!" or "There are too many mainstream releases here losers!" or my personal favorite "That film totally sucked so you guys suck!", that really get to me.

This year I decided to go ahead and make a MoreHorror Top 20 Horror Films of 2013 list because a lot of people seem interested in our take. Yes there are some mainstream Hollywood films on the list, »

15 Best Horror Movies of 2013 (Top 10)

Special Mention: Sightseers

Directed by Ben Wheatley

Written by Steve Oram and Alice Lowe

UK, 2012

This bloody, satirical road trip comedy is by no means as great as Terrence Mallick’s Badlands, but it is truly unique, strange, disquieting, and uncomfortably funny. Ben Wheatley is one of the most exciting genre filmmakers working in the industry today and has a talent for coaxing naturalistic, improvisational performances from his actors. Here, Wheatley is working for the first time from someone else’s script. Sightseers was written by TV acting and writing duo Alice Lowe and Steve Oram, with input from Wheatley’s longtime collaborator Amy Jump. In Sightseers, they achieve the relatively rare feat of striking the right balance between sharply observed characterization and jet-black humour. Sightseers was pitched as an unsold TV pilot, which was rejected by every UK broadcaster for being too dark. It isn’t quite horror, but »

In a Nutshell: V/H/S/2 Review

16 October 2013 4:14 AM, PDT | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

You can't keep a good horror anthology down, and despite the hit and miss nature of part one, V/H/S has been a considerable success for all concerned. A sequel was somewhat inevitable, and it's good to see that lessons have been learned along the way. V/H/S/2 is leaner, meaner and a lot more fun than the first entry in the series. Adam Wingard (Tape 56) is the only surviving member of the original outing, but fresh blood is provided by the makers of The Raid, Macabre, Hobo with a Shotgun and The Blair Witch Project. Simon Barrett kicks things off with wraparound tale, 'Tape 59'. Despite writing credits on both movies, this is his first stab at directorial duties, and Tape 59 is far more rewarding than the first entry in the series. It's certainly not spectacular, but it will hold your attention throughout, and there is »

V/H/S/ 2 Review

15 October 2013 1:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Following on from the relative success of found-footage horror flick V/H/S earlier this year, comes the sequel – once more bringing together a collection of filmmakers to each to present their own horror vignette. Following an almost identical formula, V/H/S 2 is harmless, enjoyable fun – yet, much like first, it pushes no boundaries and lacks distinctly in ingenuity and innovation. Oh, and it’s not very scary either.

When private investigators (Laurence Michael Levine, Kelsy Abbott) go on the hunt for a missing student (L.C. Holt), they find themselves at his derelict flat, where a collection of disturbing VHS tapes lie, waiting to be watched. As part of their ongoing investigation, the pair decide to watch the cassettes, much to their evident displeasure. Amongst the harrowing, sinister videos, we have Adam Wingard’s ‘Phase I Clinical Trials’, whereby a man (played by Wingard himself) is given a new »

The true kings of horror

4 October 2013 4:08 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

New movie V/H/S 2 has its sights set on scaring the bejeezus out of you. So we asked the directors, including Britain's own Gareth Evans, to critique other masters of the form, like that ad where the kid forgets to put his seatbelt on

The Grim Reaper stalks the reservoirs of Britain, hoping to lure an errant child to his death. A northern lad rescues a football from an electricity pylon before meeting a crispy end. Two friends caper along a train line as the rails begin to hum. A schoolboy sits moodily behind his mother, not bothering with his seatbelt. Even the threat posed by freshly polished floors was deemed enough to warrant a scare-ad by the Central Office of Information, the arm of the Cabinet Office that, until its austerity-driven closure last year, spent hundreds of millions of taxpayers' pounds (including a budget of £531m in 2009/10) trying »

V/H/S/2

Written by Brad Miska, Simon Barrett, John Davies, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Jamie Nash, Eduardo Sánchez and Timo Tjahjanto

Directed by Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sánchez, Timo Tjahjanto and Adam Wingard

USA/Canada/Indonesia, 2013

What can be said about V/H/S/2 that hasn’t already been said about its predecessor? As it turns out, not all that much. After just a year since V/H/S was first released, the second installment comes out with minimal changes, and thus should divide audiences into similar camps as the first did; that is to say, into a “don’t mess with a good thing” crowd, or a “you can’t polish a turd” circle.

Like V/H/S, V/H/S/2 (electric boogaloo?) centers around a set of mysterious tapes, each, when played, revealing a harrowing video. This time around, the poor souls »

Synopsis:

Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance.

The first V/H/S received a lot of fan praise on the festival circuit and in its cinematic release earlier this year (well, from horror fans at least, we weren't keen), but there was a lot of critique made about the movie in terms of the the quality of each short. However all the buzz about its sequel V/H/S/2 has been centred around, »

Opening in theaters this week is V/H/S/2, the follow up to the 2012 festival hit V/H/S, which presented a collection of Pov shorts as the disturbing set of footage found in an abandoned house full of VHS tapes.   The second installment brings in a new round of filmmakers, including Jason Eisener, to continue the mythology of the mysterious tape collection.  Eisener got his break in the biz when his fake trailer Hobo with a Shotgun was selected to accompany the Canadian release of Grindhouse and subsequently turned into a feature-length gore fest of the same name. His contribution to V/H/S/2, “Alien Abduction Slumber Party”, carries his trademark funhouse sensibilities, but is unique for its lack of onscreen violence.  V/H/S/2 also features shorts from Gareth Evans and Timo Tjahjanto,Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg HaleAdam Wingard, andSimon Barrett.
