To celebrate the Emmy-nominated drama “Mr. Robot,” USA chose not to bring creator Sam Esmail or male leads Rami Malek and Christian Slater to the Beverly Hilton. Instead, the “Decoding Season_2.0 with the Women of ‘Mr. Robot'” panel featured stars Grace Gummer, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday and Stephanie Corneliussen — whose richly developed characters have been the foundation of the show’s expanding scope, leading to a Season 2 that’s become so much more than one hacker’s complicated dance with reality.

Chaikin revealed that initially, the “Mr. Robot” producers refused to consider her for the role of Darlene, because of her previous work on “Suburgatory,” where she played the platonic ideal of an airhead. »

San Antonio Four: ID’s ’Southwest of Salem’ Doc Seeks Viewers’ Help for Exoneration

2 August 2016 11:18 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

“We thought it was going to be a cakewalk.”

“Southwest of Salem” director Deborah S. Esquenazi had planned to end her documentary with the happy exoneration of the San Antonio Four. Unfortunately, the case is still ongoing, despite mounting evidence of injustice.

In 1994, four Latina lesbian women — Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh and Anna Vasquez — were wrongfully accused of gang-raping two little girls in San Antonio. The accused were released from prison when one of the girls recanted, and some of the forensic evidence were debunked in 2012 and 2013. The women have yet to be exonerated, though, and their freedoms are still curtailed.

Esquenazi filmed the hearings for ID’s documentary “Southwest of Salem” and felt that the evidence was presented “so meticulously” that the four women’s innocence would be apparent. “But the hours passed, and the judge got more ornery,” she said at the Television Critics Association panel for the film on Monday. »

NBC’s Bob Greenblatt and Jennifer Salke on Donald Trump, Comedy Woes and New Dick Wolf, Paul Haggis Dramas

2 August 2016 10:33 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Even if Donald Trump loses the race for the American presidency, there isn’t room for him back at his old stomping ground.

“He will never be back on the Celebrity Apprentice, as long as I’m here,” NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters. Would Trump be welcome to star in another show on the network? “I have no idea at this point.”

Did “The Apprentice” and “Celebrity Apprentice” play a role in Trump’s ultimate candidacy? Earlier this summer, NBC’s alternative programming president Paul Telegdy told us “yes.” Greenblatt said he was less sure there was a correlation.

“[‘Doonesbury’ creator] Garry Trudeau was predicting Donald Trump would run for president 15 years before,” he noted. “I think it surprised all of us that [Trump] would want to do this. I guess that’s what’s great about this country.”

NBC Orders Pilot From Warren Leight and Paul Haggis, Developing ‘Waking Lions’ From Gideon Raff

NBC has ordered Warren Leight and Paul Haggis’ “Salvation” to pilot, and is developing the Gideon Raff drama “Waking Lions,” Variety has learned.

Leight, who recently exited “Law & Order: Svu” as showrunner, has penned the script for “Salvation,” a medical series being described by NBC as the “first real-time hospital ‘extreme event’ drama.” The story begins on the Fourth of July weekend, when a massive storm hits New York City and leaves Our Lady of Salvation hospital as the last open trauma center in Brooklyn. The trouble is, Our Lady of Salvation was recently decimated by downsizing, leaving few doctors on hand to handle the hordes of incoming patients. “Salvation” is a Sony Pictures Television production.

Raff’s “Waking Lions” will be based on the novel of the same name by Israeli author Ayelet Gundar-Goshen. In the international best-seller, Beverly Hills doctor Eitan Green hits and kills an African immigrant on his drive home one night »

How Gillian Anderson and Dane Cook Got Cast in Starz’s ‘American Gods’

1 August 2016 1:03 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Starz’s “American Gods” has been an intriguing project from the get-go, thanks to the beloved nature of Neil Gaiman’s best-selling fantasy novel. That interest has only increased with fans over the course of the casting process.

At the Television Critics Association press tour Monday morning, “American Gods” showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green explained what went into finding their men and gods. That included a dedication to keeping the characters true to their depictions in the books, especially when it came to ethnicity.

“There was never really a question of doing otherwise,” Fuller said. “In order to be true to the book you had to cast the character as written.” (Not mentioned: The fact that at San Diego Comic-Con this year, Gaiman said that one of his conditions for adapting the book was that there be no whitewashing.)
