Live, Die, and Repeat in the First Trailer for ‘Flatliners’ Remake

13 June 2017 6:13 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

In a post-Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping world, the concept of Flatliners loses a bit of its edge after viewing Bill Hader’s one-off scene, but nonetheless a remake will arrive this fall. Starring Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons, the first trailer has landed, which followed a group of medical students who experiment with dying, then coming back to life.

“We viewed the original movie as a jumping-off point – and are now telling a re-imagined story with new characters,” producer Michael Douglas tells Fandango, who debuted the trailer. “We have learned more and more about the world, and science keeps answering so many questions and taking us to so many previously unexplored places – but still no one knows what happens after we die. That’s a question we’ll be asking ourselves forever.”

The 25 Best Comedies of the 21st Century, Ranked

9 June 2017 8:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Now more than ever, the world could use a laugh. This bizarre, in-progress century has already produced any number of great comedies, which is to say that many of your (and our) favorites were left out: sorry, “Toy Story 3”; sorry, “Knocked Up.” As we tend to lean toward the indie side — and away from certain men-behaving-badly movies — there are also some titles on here that you might not have seen.

There are even some you may not consider to be straightforward comedies. You may not think of “Lost in Translation” or “Mistress America” as laugh riots, but we felt it best to be broad in our approach — any movie that balances its darker shades with cathartic humor was eligible. You’ll notice that we like women and Working Title (the British production company responsible for several titles on this list), which is to say: This is less a definitive »

Emmy Contenders 2017: Lead Actor in a Comedy

31 May 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It remains to be seen if anyone can break Jeffrey Tambor’s two-year winning streak for “Transparent,” but there’s a formidable group that will make a strong effort. In fact, this category could be an exact repeat of last year’s lineup, with Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”), Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”), Will Forte (“The Last Man On Earth”), William H. Macy (“Shameless”), and Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”) all eligible. But it’s likely at least one will be displaced by Donald Glover’s star turn on the FX comedy “Atlanta,” which won dual Golden Globe Awards for best comedy series and comedy actor this year. Glover has been busy at work on the high-profile Han Solo prequel, which certainly puts him front and center in voters’ minds. But never count out Jim Parsons, who could return for his work on “The Big Bang Theory,” which has already landed him four Emmys. And »

Power Rangers 2 could still happen thanks to impressive toy sales

30 May 2017 1:15 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Power Rangers wasn’t exactly a flop at the box office, but it probably wasn’t the hit that Lionsgate were hoping for. Its domestic total of $85 million was below it’s $100 million investment, and a poor opening in China meant it only earned $140 million worldwide. As such, news spread that sequels to the movie (seven were planned at one point) were to be scrapped.

However a new report from Toy News (via Den of Geek) might bring some good news for fans of the franchise. According to the site, sales figures for Power Rangers toys show a growth of 122% year to date, and April’s sales figures were up 185% from 2016, making the toyline the number one action figure brand.

“These are fantastic results testament to the strength of the Power Rangers brand, which at the end of April, ranks 11th across all toy properties,” said Tess Parsons–Broome, marketing manager at master toy partner, »

Rihanna, Nyong'o and DuVeray Team for Netflix Movie Based on a Meme

22 May 2017 6:52 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last month, a 2014 photo of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o, who were both sitting in the front row of a Miu Miu fashion show, went viral, with several social media users crafting a movie idea around this image alone. It all started with one Twitter user dubbed "@1800Sadgal" calling for a heist movie where Rihanna would play the "tough-as-nails leader/master thief", with Lupita Nyong'o portraying "the genius computer hacker." During the Cannes Film Festival, Netflix actually picked up this project, which will star both actresses with Ava DuVernay set to direct from a script by Insecure creator Issa Rae.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Netflix closed a deal for the concept of this Meme Movie, which still doesn't have a title, during a "dramatic negotiation session." There were several other buyers bidding for the project, but Netflix won with an "aggressive bid" that secured the rights. Another report from Vanity Fair »

New ‘Band Aid’ Trailer Brings Together Love & Rock ‘n Roll

12 May 2017 8:56 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The “dramedy” has become such a staple in independent cinema (and television) that it deserves its own category. It’s the type of film that isn’t consistently laugh out loud funny but the leads are typically naturally comical and played by well known, on the curve of their big, movie “break” sitcom stars. In that vein of film we get anything from the dreadful “The Hollars,” the Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig showcase “The Skeleton Twins” to the film that nearly defines this lo-fi, sad guy comedy genre, “Garden State.

Snatched – Review

11 May 2017 10:44 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It’s a big holiday weekend, so Hollywood has concocted a new flick that’s a perfect match for that very special day. It’s an ode to mothers everywhere, but it’s not sugary and sappy, no hearts and flowers here. That’s because it’s the sophomore feature film from Amy Schumer, so it’s more than a touch tart and spicy. Two years ago the superstar of stand-up and cable TV (the critical and ratings darling of Comedy Central) stormed the multiplex with the hit comedy romance (which she wrote) Trainwreck. For this follow-up , she’s decided to share the screen (top billing, above the title in the ads) with a movie veteran. Of course, she had terrific co-stars in her previous flick (Bill Hader, future Oscar-winner Brie Larson and NBA icon LeBron James, for gosh sake). But this time Amy’s part of a team similar »
