Rihanna, Nyong'o and DuVeray Team for Netflix Movie Based on a Meme

22 May 2017 6:52 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last month, a 2014 photo of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o, who were both sitting in the front row of a Miu Miu fashion show, went viral, with several social media users crafting a movie idea around this image alone. It all started with one Twitter user dubbed "@1800Sadgal" calling for a heist movie where Rihanna would play the "tough-as-nails leader/master thief", with Lupita Nyong'o portraying "the genius computer hacker." During the Cannes Film Festival, Netflix actually picked up this project, which will star both actresses with Ava DuVernay set to direct from a script by Insecure creator Issa Rae.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Netflix closed a deal for the concept of this Meme Movie, which still doesn't have a title, during a "dramatic negotiation session." There were several other buyers bidding for the project, but Netflix won with an "aggressive bid" that secured the rights. Another report from Vanity Fair »

New ‘Band Aid’ Trailer Brings Together Love & Rock ‘n Roll

12 May 2017 8:56 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The “dramedy” has become such a staple in independent cinema (and television) that it deserves its own category. It’s the type of film that isn’t consistently laugh out loud funny but the leads are typically naturally comical and played by well known, on the curve of their big, movie “break” sitcom stars. In that vein of film we get anything from the dreadful “The Hollars,” the Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig showcase “The Skeleton Twins” to the film that nearly defines this lo-fi, sad guy comedy genre, “Garden State.

Snatched – Review

It’s a big holiday weekend, so Hollywood has concocted a new flick that’s a perfect match for that very special day. It’s an ode to mothers everywhere, but it’s not sugary and sappy, no hearts and flowers here. That’s because it’s the sophomore feature film from Amy Schumer, so it’s more than a touch tart and spicy. Two years ago the superstar of stand-up and cable TV (the critical and ratings darling of Comedy Central) stormed the multiplex with the hit comedy romance (which she wrote) Trainwreck. For this follow-up , she’s decided to share the screen (top billing, above the title in the ads) with a movie veteran. Of course, she had terrific co-stars in her previous flick (Bill Hader, future Oscar-winner Brie Larson and NBA icon LeBron James, for gosh sake). But this time Amy’s part of a team similar »

2 May 2017 8:40 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Although Power Rangers has not released theatrically in all markets yet (this summer it is slated to release in the second largest market for blockbuster cinema, China, and yesterday got some new posters celebrating that upcoming launch), we now have details for the North American home entertainment release of the big screen reboot.

According to distributor Lionsgate, Power Rangers will be released on Ultra 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray June 27th, and digital home video on June 13th. As yet, there’s no word on the special features set to be included with the release.

Power Rangers receives new triptych posters ahead of China release

1 May 2017 7:00 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Although the Power Rangers reboot didn’t exactly like the box office on fire, it is currently sitting on $134 million from a production budget of $100 million. That figure doesn’t really justify going ahead with all of the numerous planned sequels, although Lionsgate will no doubt be hoping that its arrival in China on May 12th alters that picture considerably, and to promote its upcoming release the studio has debuted a new triptych poster featuring the mighty morphin’ heroes.

China is currently the second largest market for blockbuster films and has already saved the films like Pacific Rim and Warcraft from being considered a total bust, so time will tell if the moviegoers over there can turn Power Rangers into an all out success.

Jonathan Demme’s Last Project, ‘Shots Fired,’ Airs Tonight — Remembering His Best TV Work

26 April 2017 9:46 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Jonathan Demme’s films, including “The Silence of the Lambs” and “Philadelphia,” won Oscars, earned worldwide acclaim, and influenced countless filmmakers. But his efforts on the small screen were anything but small in comparison. Over the course of nearly 40 years in TV, Demme directed, wrote, and produced an impressive array of genres and worked with artists like Laura Dern, Peter Falk, Elliot Gould, Patrick Wilson, Aisha Hinds, and Helen Hunt.

Demme died Wednesday morning in New York at the age of 73. The cause was esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease, according to a source close to the family. He was originally treated for the disease in 2010, but suffered from a recurrence in 2015, and his condition deteriorated in recent weeks.

Original Power Rangers stars share their issues with the big screen reboot

This past weekend at C2E2 (an absolute blast of a comic convention that yours truly actually attended this year), Walter Jones and David Yost (the former Black and Blue Power Rangers respectively) were interviewed on the live stage and discussed the Power Rangers reboot and some gripes that they each had with the film.

Keep in mind while reading the below quotes that they were not completely hateful of the movie and praised R.J. Cyler as Billy along with the decision to essentially make him an autistic superhero.

Walter Jones expressed disappointment that “they changed the characters around a little bit because I wanted Zack to be with his kido because Hip Hop Kido was a really important element of who I was on Power Rangers. I think if they would have added that then there could have been some parkour and there could have been so many other »

‘Brockmire’ Review: IFC Has A Great Hank Azaria, Amanda Peet Rom-Com With a Baseball Problem

5 April 2017 7:15 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

One of the crown jewels in IFC’s original programming lineup is their category-eluding “Documentary Now!,” a dutiful series of pitch-perfect documentary parodies that, by some great beneficence, has managed to stay on air for multiple seasons. On its surface, some of that show’s standout elements also power “Brockmire,” the network’s new comedy focusing on a fallen baseball play-by-play announcer who’s given a second chance with a minor league outfit.

While lower-level professional sports has a fandom as niche as that for classic nonfiction filmmaking — complete with a specific visual style and an upper echelon of legendary figures — the eight-episode first season still struggles to find the level of specificity that makes other IFC comedies hum.
