Icons Exclusive Interview: Director Darren Lynn Bousman

11 May 2012 9:46 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

*Editor’s note: This interview originally appeared on Icons Of Fright’s sister site Massive Hysteria back in September of 2010. With this week’s DVD/Blu-Ray releases of both Mother’S Day and 11-11-11, we thought we’d present it again to the Icons audience completely unedited and uncut. Check it!

Considering director Darren Lynn Bousman’s impressive body of work, which spans over 3 Saw sequels, the crazy rock musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, an episode of NBC’s short lived Fear Itself TV series and the upcoming remake of Mother’S Day, it’s a surprise that we never got him in the hot seat for an extensive Icons Of Fright interview. So, with the launch of Massive Hysteria, we decided that he would make for the ideal interviewee to kick things off in style!

Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth Tie West Memphis Three Into A 'Devil's Knot'

3 February 2012 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Colin Firth is joining Reese Witherspoon in Atom Egoyan's drama based on the real-life case of the West Memphis Three, "Devil's Knot."

Deadline has the news, and reports that the story centers on Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. who were convicted of the murder of three 8-year-old boys. The case was sensationalized with reports of devil worship and ritualized sacrifice, despite lack of physical evidence. Witherspoon will play a mother of one of the murdered boys, while Firth will take on the role of the heroic investigator who helped the Memphis Three when no one else would, uncovering important evidence for their defense.

3 February 2012 5:48 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It was announced just a few weeks ago that James Marsden, Thomas Jane and Billy Bob Thornton were leading David Hackl‘s latest project, Red Machine; and now, Variety reports that Scott Glenn, Adam Beach, Michaela McManus and Kelly Curran have rounded out the cast for the thriller.

The script is written by J.R. Reher and “centers around two estranged brothers (Marsden, Jane) who reconcile on a camping trip with their girlfriends. Once in the remote wilderness, however, things go horribly awry when they are attacked and relentlessly stalked by a horrifying grizzly bear — the Red Machine.” Thorton plays a “legendary bear expert and hunter”, who will inevitability save the terrified campers (I have a feeling that this part was somehow made for him).

Scott Glenn, Adam Beach And More Round Out The Red Machine Cast

2 February 2012 10:41 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When I first read about Red Machine, the new film from director David Hackl, the plot description made it sound like it was going to be a fairly small movie. The story involves two estranged brothers who decide to go on a camping trip with their girlfriends and end up being stalked by the eponymous grizzly bear. My perception was that the movie would be a survivalist drama that would focus on the small group and be more of a character study that looked at how the players would survive under the worst of conditions. Now that I've seen the extended cast list, it looks as though that won't be the case. According to a new report from Variety, Red Machine has completed its casting and James Marsden, Thomas Jane, Piper Perabo and Billy Bob Thornton will be joined by Scott Glenn, Adam Beach, Michaela McManus and Kelly Curran. Casting Bits: Kate Hudson in ‘Everly’, Piper Perabo in ‘Red Machine’, Common in ‘Now You See Me’

1 February 2012 3:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Could romcom queen Kate Hudson be branching out at last? Earlier this week, she signed on for her first animated feature in DreamWorks' Me & My Shadow, and she's now gunning for action stardom with Everly. Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdom) will direct from a 2010 Black List script by Yale Hannon. Hudson will play a woman trapped in her apartment as she fends off attacks from assassins hired by her ex, a ruthless mob boss. Hudson is best known for her romantic comedy roles, like last year's Little Bit of Heaven and Something Borrowed, but her upcoming slate shows a little more variety. In addition to Me & My Shadow and Everly, she also has Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist due out next year. After the jump, Piper Perabo fights a bear and Common does magic. David Hackl's testosterone-heavy man vs. bear movie Red Machine has just cast its first female lead in Piper Perabo. »

Samantha Barks Cast as Eponine in Les Miserables; Piper Perabo Joins Red Machine

31 January 2012 6:41 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When last we reported on the female lead casting of director Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables, we told you that Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) had been offered the role of Cosette and Taylor Swift (Valentine’s Day) had been asked to play Eponine.  While Seyfried has accepted, Deadline is reporting that stage performer Samantha Barks has bested Swift for the role of Eponine. She previously performed the role in 2010’s London production of Les Miserables as well as the 25th anniversary concert last year. Barks will join Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit and Seyfried for the December 7th release. Click here to see all of our previous coverage on Les Miserables. Samantha Barks Boards ‘Les Mis’; Common Joins ‘Now You See Me’; Soo Hoo on ‘Ender’s Game’; Piper Perabo to ‘Red Machine’

31 January 2012 6:38 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

If you cared enough about Les Miserables to despair at the casting of Taylor Swfit, rest easy. Deadline reports that someone else — veteran of the stage version, no less — has taken the role of Eponine: Samantha Barks, who was reportedly hand-picked by producer Cameron Mackintosh. Those of you not up on your Victor Hugo will surely appreciate me telling you that, in the story, Eponine is caught in something of a love triangle with Amanda Seyfried‘s Cosette and Eddie Redmayne‘s Marius — all while Enjolras (Aaron Tveit) tries to get a revolution going, that is.

The rest of the cast — as you’ve heard 8,000 times — will be occupied by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Sascha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, and George Blagden. Barks is very likely the smallest of these names, but, when it comes down to selection, I’ll take a pro over Swift eight days »

Thomas Jane, James Marsden, and Billy Bob Thornton Join Red Machine

20 January 2012 11:00 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

We finally have an update on Red Machine, from Saw V's David Hackl. Variety (via Bloody Disgusting) is reporting that the long-gestating project written by Jack Rehr looks to be a go. James Marsden, Thomas Jane, and Billy Bob Thornton have all joined the cast.

The project "centers around two estranged brothers (Marsden, Jane) who reconcile on a camping trip with their girlfriends. Once in the remote wilderness, however, things go horribly awry when they are attacked and relentlessly stalked by a horrifying grizzly bear -- the Red Machine. Thornton will play a legendary bear expert and hunter." The Grey features Liam Neeson taking on some vicious wolves, but there are not enough bear attack movies out there. I am not a fan of the Saw franchise, but I think this is a solid cast. What are your thoughts?

Liam Neeson may have his hands full taking on the harsh winter cold and a pack of ravenous wolves in The Grey next week, but a pack of actos has just joined a cast of a movie, where a bear will be the force of contention. A movie titled Red Machine is about to add a few components in the form of James Marsden, Thomas Jane and Billy Bob Thornton. According to Variety, the three actors will appear in David Hackl’s movie about two brothers who will attempt to put an end to their sibling rivalry by taking a bonding camping trip. Jane and Marsden are tapped to play as the brothers. However the brothers’ bond are put to the test when they face a vicious bear called “The Red Machine.” As you can guess the bear got his name for his capacity to kill at will.

Haven't these guys seen "The Edge?" Bears eat people!

Regardless of the danger, James Marsden, Thomas Jane and Billy Bob Thornton are set to prove their mettle as they've signed on to star in the wilderness survival thriller, "Red Machine," according to Variety.

"Red Machine" tells the tale of two estranged brothers (Marsden and Jane) who reconcile while on a camping trip with their respective girlfriends; their great reconciliation in the great outdoors is interrupted when a giant grizzly bear known as 'The Red Machine' begins stalking them. Thornton is set to channel Robert Shaw in "Jaws" as a legendary bear expert and hunter who probably gets killed.

"Red Machine" will be directed by David Hackl, the man who took over the "Saw" franchise from Darren Lynn Bousman with the fifth installment, with newcomer J.R. Reher providing the script.
