Julia Roberts Prefers Ensemble Casts

19 December 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood actress Julia Roberts prefers to work as part of an ensemble cast, because she feels less pressure for the movie to perform well at the box office. The Oscar-winning actress has appeared in a string of films filled with big-name casts - including Ocean's Eleven, America's Sweethearts and her latest effort Mona Lisa Smile - since she last headlined with 2000's Erin Brockovich. And Julia puts her love of ensemble casts down to enjoyment, and less work. The 36-year-old says, "It's just more fun, I think. It's more fun and less work. These are the things I strive for in life. But it's really quite selfish, because their genius makes me look like a genius, so it's not like I'm really giving back." But the trial of working with younger actresses including Julia Stiles, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kirsten Dunst on Mona Lisa seems to have taken its toll on Julia's public persona. She says, "This is what I got asked yesterday: 'What was it like working with all these young, beautiful girls and having to get up every day and look at yourself in the mirror? Does that make you consider plastic surgery?' I was just so insulted. She was not having her best day either, let me tell you. I get asked a lot of insulting questions. I think they're just thoughtless." »

Warners unit gets the 'Bend'

7 August 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

While Hollywood awaits the expected announcement of Stratus Film Co. president Mark Gill as the new head of Warner Bros. Pictures' specialty division, potential projects to come from the new unit are already swirling. One candidate, sources said, is the drama Around the Bend, written by Jordan Roberts, who will make his directorial debut on the project. Roberts, who just signed with ICM, has already attached a cast that includes Christopher Walken, Michael Caine and Josh Lucas as three generations of men who head out on the road in search of an old family secret. But because Warner Bros.' Section Eight and John Wells Prods. are expected to be major suppliers for the specialty label, such titles as Section Eight's Eros, Criminal, which is in production with John C. Reilly, Diego Luna and Maggie Gyllenhaal starring, and The Jacket, with Adrien Brody likely starring for director John Maybury, also are possibilities, sources said. »

Gyllenhaal has 'Criminal' intent for WB thriller

2 May 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Secretary star Maggie Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to join John C. Reilly and Diego Luna in the Warner Bros. Pictures feature Criminal (aka Nine Queens) for Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney's Section Eight Prods. The project, a remake of an Argentine feature, begins production next month with Gregory Jacobs directing. Criminal is a caper thriller about two men (Reilly and Luna) who team on a scam involving a forged set of extremely valuable stamps, the Nine Queens. Gyllenhaal would play the sister of Reilly's character, whom he swindles out of her inheritance. Jacobs, Soderbergh's longtime first assistant director, co-wrote with Soderbergh the English version of the screenplay. Soderbergh and Clooney will produce, with Section Eight's Jennifer Fox and Ben Cosgrove executive producing. Warners vp production Jessica Goodman will oversee the project on behalf of the studio, which acquired remake rights to Criminal two months ago (HR 2/6). Gyllenhaal, repped by CAA and Benderspink's Courtney Kivowitz, next stars in Revolution Studios' Mona Lisa Smile opposite Julia Roberts and IFC Films' Casa de Los Babys for writer-director John Sayles. »

No Nudity for Jake Gyllenhaal--Yet!

24 February 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Donnie Darko star Jake Gyllenhaal has turned down the opportunity to work with an acclaimed Italian filmmaker, because he doesn't want to take his clothes off. The young hunk was offered a role in Bernado Bertolucci's The Dreamers, but refused because he has strict rules concerning on-screen disrobing. The Good Girl star claims he'll only agree to nudity in his roles when it plays a part in the story telling of the movie. He says, "I'll show my d*ck if it helps the narrative. I'm not going to throw my d*ck around just because. And if I do it, I want to establish a base of trust and have a final say in how much of my body is shown." However, the more gregarious streak in the family can be found in sibling Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jake adds, "My sister's naked in Secretary and it was in Playboy later. But she made a great movie and it was part of the narrative and she said if it's in Playboy f*ck it. more publicity for the movie. At least the movie told a great story." »

Gyllenhaal Siblings Defy Traditional Rivalry

19 February 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Acting siblings Jake Gyllenhaal and Maggie Gyllenhaal refuse to be drawn into a rivalry over their careers - because they have too much love for each other. The sexy stars have both wowed audiences in the last few years - Jake in Donnie Darko and The Good Girl, Maggie in Secretary - and often find that other people are trying to stir competitiveness between them. Jake says, "I think we are less competitive now. We've realized our competition doesn't come from each other. It's from the outside, people pushing the competition and us being like, 'Wait. What the f*** are we doing? I love you. I love you too. There's no need for this'. Then again, we both want to do great work. I know she's great, but the choices she makes come from the same places mine do. It's like watching me sometimes. We're really close that way. Maggie's my best friend." »
