‘The Wound’ Review: Adult Circumcision Drama Cuts the Tension Between Masculinity and Modernity

22 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The cut only only takes a fraction of a second, but the trauma it leaves behind takes a lifetime to heal. It happens every winter, as teenage boys of South Africa’s Xhosa culture are spirited up to the hills around their hometowns, stripped down and smothered in ghostly white paint, and told to spread their legs. Their foreskins are then sliced away by tribal surgeons, many of whom use rusted knives rather than sterile medical equipment. All the same, it’s absolutely forbidden for the initiates to scream out in pain. This is a rite of passage, the start of a three-week initiation ritual meant to confer manhood — boys cry, but men suffer in silence. As Nelson Mandela wrote in his memoir: “An uncircumcised Xhosa man is a contradiction in terms.”

Ukwaluka is a time-honored practice; it began long before Mandela himself endured the experience in 1934, and it still »

Maggie Gyllenhaal Is Fighting Sexism In Film and TV By Becoming a Producer

23 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When Jessica Chastain condemned cinematic portrayals of women after spending 10 days as a Cannes Film Festival juror, Maggie Gyllenhaal had deja vu: She had a similar experience as a member of the Berlin International Film Festival’s jury in February. After watching 25 movies in two weeks, the actress grew frustrated.

“There were some amazing performances by women, but one of them was about this woman obsessed with her lover, and in two others, the women were mentally ill,” she said. “So I really related to what Jessica Chastain said. In my life, I think there have been very few representations of women that feel like something I can actually recognize as relating to my experience.”

Now, as a producer on both of her upcoming projects, she’s finding a new way to address that challenge.

For the third year, the Toronto International Film Festival is bringing TV to the well-respected fest, spotlighting a few highly anticipated upcoming series from Netflix, HBO, and Starz, along with international entries representing new voices in the marketplace.

As with last year, Tiff is focusing the Primetime line-up on a limited selection of options, but screening multiple episodes of its five picks. According to Tiff programmer Michael Lerman, the limited number of selections was part of a festival-wide decision to shrink the number of events down, in order to “tighten up the focus a little bit.”

“That way, we can hyperfocus on [the screenings] and make them the best events they can be,” he told IndieWire.

James Franco Shines In New Trailer For HBO’s ‘The Deuce’

8 August 2017 11:30 AM, PDT | Age of the Nerd | See recent Age of the Nerd news »

(Aotn) Taking us back to the gritty 1970’s New York City, a time when sex and drugs ran rampant and the porn industry went from being a back-alley, brown-paper-bag commodity to a billion-dollar universal in American life. There was a moment when ground zero for the earliest pioneers in the flesh trade was the midtown heart of the nation’s largest city, New York’s Times Square. HBO’s new eight episode series “The Deuce” starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal provides us with a look at this time of both sexual and cultural awakening.

Taking a page out of the “Fargo” playbook, Franco will portray two rival twin brothers who eventually became Mob fronts for the Gambino family in midtown, rising to some prominence in their own right. Those tales – provided by a brother who passed away a few brief months before “The Deuce” began filming its pilot – form »

HBO drops a new trailer for porn industry drama The Deuce

During last night’s programming, HBO transported viewers back to the 1970s with a brand new trailer for The Deuce. The upcoming TV drama, which centers around the early days of the porn industry in New York City, stars James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, the former of which pulls double duty playing twins Vincent and Frankie Martino. See a bustling, yet seedy city at the cusp of a billion-dollar industry in the footage below…

The Deuce comes to us from HBO royalty David Simon and George Pelecanos, who both are looking to continue their streak of bringing ground-level, city-focused dramas to the network. Pelecanos has worked as a writer and producer on Simon’s The Wire and Treme, which took place in Baltimore and New Orleans, respectively. Those shows ran for several seasons, although Treme never found an audience as passionate as The Wire’s, so if The Deuce performs similarly, »

Quote of the Day: Jessica Lange Says “Ageism is Pervasive” in the Film Biz

1 August 2017 1:01 PM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Jessica Lange in “Feud: Bette and Joan

After more than four decades in the industry, Jessica Lange continues to deliver standout performances and rack up awards. She’s up for an Emmy this year for playing Joan Crawford in “Feud: Bette and Joan,” and has taken home two trophies from the ceremony in recent years for her work on “American Horror Story.” But Lange is one of very few women her age who continue to be cast in major roles.

“Ageism is pervasive in this industry,” she says in a new interview with Aarp. “It’s not a level playing field.” And particularly not for women. The Oscar winner explains, “You don’t often see women in their 60s playing romantic leads, yet you will see men in their 60s playing romantic leads with costars who are decades younger. I think about how few wonderful actresses of my generation are still doing viable, important film work. You go to television. You go to the stage. You do whatever you can because you want to keep working.”

Lange’s frequent collaborator, Ryan Murphy, has spoken out against ageism in the industry as well. “I feel like it’s ridiculous that women over 40 aren’t working,” he’s said.

While TV is dramatically more welcoming to older actresses looking for meaty roles, the small screen is still ageist — and sexist. Dr. Martha Lauzen’s research report on the 2015–16 TV season revealed that “42 percent of male characters were 40 and older but only 25 percent of female characters were 40 and older. Few characters of either sex age into their 60s and beyond. Five percent of males but only 2 percent of females were 60 and above.”

In the past, Helen Mirren — one of the few actresses her age who continues to book leading roles — has also addressed the fact that men age and their romantic co-leads don’t. When she was asked about Maggie Gyllenhaal’s admission that, at 37, she was “too old” to play a 55-year-old man’s love interest, Mirren responded bluntly: “It’s fucking outrageous. Fucking outrageous. It’s ridiculous, honestly. It’s so annoying.” The “Eye in the Sky” star insinuated that the double standards for aging male and female actors are nothing new, saying, “We all watched James Bond as he got more and more geriatric, and his girlfriends got younger and younger. It’s so annoying.”
