Elizabeth Banks was turned down from a lead role in the first Spider-Man movie because she was deemed "too old"...

She may now be an a Hollywood producer and director, as well as a firmly established actress. But Elizabeth Banks has revealed that she was actually told she wasn’t young enough to play Spidey’s love interest in 2002’s Spider-Man.

At the age of 28, Banks was hardly any older than webslinger Tobey Maguire, but the Mary Jane Watson hopeful was cast in a supporting role because of her age. It was then-18-year-old Kirsten Dunst who ended up being romanced by Peter Parker.

Banks was baffled. “Tobey [Maguire] and I are basically the same age - and I was told I was too old to play her,” she confessed to Glamour. “I was like ‘Oh, okay, that’s what I’ve signed up for.”

Elizabeth Banks Says She Was Deemed ‘Too Old’ for 2002 ‘Spider-Man’ Role

22 June 2016 1:12 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Elizabeth Banks didn’t need “Spidey sense” to pick up on signs of age discrimination when she auditioned for Mary Jane Watson in 2002’s “Spider-Man” at the age of 28.

“Tobey and I are basically the same age — and I was told I was too old to play her,” Banks told Glamour UK, referring to the film’s lead, Tobey Maguire, who is about 16 months her junior. “I was like, ‘Oh, Ok, that’s what I’ve signed up for,'” she said.

The role would go to Kirsten Dunst, who was 18 years old. Banks was cast in the film, but in a supporting part.

Banks’ anecdote is the latest coming from a number of actresses who have spoken out about the age gap between male actors and their female romantic counterparts. In March, Olivia Wilde said she was deemed “too old” to play opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Wolf of Wall Street. »

TV Movie and Limited Series Actor Nominees Could Line Up With Oscars

9 June 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When it came to the lead acting races in last year’s limited series or movie category, the women mounted an impressive lineup. Three Academy Award winners (Frances McDormand, Jessica Lange, and Emma Thompson) and three Oscar nominees (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, and Felicity Huffman) competed for the top prize, which went to McDormand for “Olive Kitteridge.”

This year, it looks to be the men’s turn, with a surprising number of Oscar nominees and winners eligible in the category, along with some big-name star power flexing its muscles. Academy Award winners in the running for lead actor include Anthony Hopkins (“The Dresser”), Cuba Gooding Jr. (“The People V. O.J. Simpson”), Richard Dreyfuss (“Madoff”), and Timothy Hutton (“American Crime”).

They will face considerable competition from Oscar nominees like Benedict Cumberbatch, who has already won an Emmy for his role in “Sherlock,” and Ian McKellen, who goes head-to-head with Hopkins in “The Dresser. »

Watch: Amy Schumer Skewers Hollywood With Julianne Moore, Jennifer Hudson

6 May 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Amy Schumer is no stranger to skewering gender politics and social injustices in her Emmy-winning Comedy Central series, “Inside Amy Schumer.” True to form, the opening skit in the May 5 episode tackled the sorts of roles written for women in Hollywood, and she had the help of some Oscar winners and nominees to bring it home. Julianne Moore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jennifer Hudson, and Laura Linney all came on board to spoof “best leading actress” nominees whose roles are confined to crying on the phone while waiting for her husband and raising her children. Introduced on the Oscar stage by Steve Buscemi, Schumer (here Amy Winsbury, star of “The Clumsy Coal Miner”) ends up taking the title—but she’s only available by phone for her acceptance speech. “More than anything, I really want to thank the writers, because you’re the ones that come up with all these dynamic roles for women, »

Maggie Gyllenhaal at Her Naughtiest: Watch Secretary

It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed a movie that has been released for quite some time. I recently watched Secretary, a movie from 2002 of which I had never heard. How did I miss this film? While not the greatest movie – and the low budget shows throughout viewing – it’s got a very good cast that serve up great performances. More importantly, though, it deals with a topic that is so taboo that I would have imagined it nearly impossible to make a watchable movie about that topic. Director Steven Shainberg succeeded in that endeavor. So, what just

Novelists Megan Abbott and Lisa Lutz have joined the writing team for “The Deuce,” the upcoming HBO drama from David Simon and James Franco. Abbott and Lutz join current writers Simon, George Pelecanos and Richard Price.

Set in the ’70s and ’80s, “The Deuce” tells the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square. It explores the rough-and-tumble world that existed there before the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic and the renewed real estate market ended the bawdy turbulence. The show is inspired by twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, porn-industry players who fronted for organized crime. Franco will play both characters. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also set to star.

Abbott is the author of the books “Dare Me” and “The Fever.” Her next novel, “You Will Know Me,” is scheduled for release in July.
