Maj. Laird Guttersen USAF was a pilot attached to the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 8th Tactical Fighter Wing out of Ubon, Thailand. On February 23, 1968, he was flying a F-4D Phantom II fighter jet, tail number 66-8725 on a mission close to Hanoi. His aircraft was hit by a missile from a North Vietnamese MiG-21.
