The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Another Hilarious Interview with Everyone's Favorite Ass-Kicker Michael Rooker

10 December 2010 12:39 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

I don’t know about other interviewers and whether they have a favorite interviewee, but mine, hands down, is Michael Rooker. The guy is the total package: hilarious, serious about his craft, a goofball at times, but always willing to talk about his latest or upcoming projects. And he’s just Such a nice guy!

So, when "The Walking Dead" started, I knew I had to interview him for that as his character quickly became a fan favorite. Then, I got the bonus of discussing Rooker’s directorial debut, also in the horror genre, Pennhurst. The interview that follows took over two hours to conduct and a few extra days of back and forth to clean things up, but it was one of the most hilarious interviews I’ve done in quite a while.

Read on for Part One, focusing on "The Walking Dead", and look for Part Two, all about Pennhurst, »

‘Super’ – A twisted, semi-schizophrenic cult classic in the making…

30 November 2010 11:23 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Super is a twisted, semi-schizophrenic cult classic in the making…”

Super

Directed by James Gunn

Written by James Gunn

2010, USA

Super embraces pretty much all the bearings of the “everyman turned superhero” concept; its tropes include the obligatory costumed hero (minus an obligatory tragic origin story), the attractive damsel in distress, a heartless villain, a few henchmen, a young sidekick, and an urban environment torn apart by corruption and crime . Unlike previous installments of the new sub-genre, however, director James Gunn opts for a darker, weirder and much more cynical approach. This low-budget movie

continually shifts from comic-book spoof to gritty crime story to mental-health drama. Super is far from the first film to strand a wannabe superhero into the real world, but this send-up of “amateur vigilante movies” has more in common with Peter StebbingsDefendor than, say, Kick-Ass.

The drama is mostly of the sad-sack variety, brimming with twisted humor. »

James Gunn's Super Headed to Theatres in New York, La, and More!

29 November 2010 3:15 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We're very particular about what kind of superhero film coverage we dole out around here. There has to be something really dark or some form of monster involved to get our attention. In James Gunn's new flick Super (review here), we have a semi-psychotic Rainn Wilson thinking he's a superhero and beating people unmercifully with a club. Yep. That's good enough for us!

Word just came in that IFC Films is releasing James Gunn's Super, starring Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon, April 1st in New York and Los Angeles and will expand from there to top markets nationwide.

For more check out James Gunn's official website. In the interim dig on some new stills from the flick as well as the clip that was shown at this year's Scream Awards below.

James Gunn has spent the past week or so basically being like this, "I know when Super is going to be released and you don't." Then I'm sure he said something about ground sirloin moisturizer and having two penises because that's how he rolls. Well, Gunn's plan to release the date on his own was foiled by SuperHeroHype so he just said f*ck it and confirmed the news that the movie would open on April 1, 2011 in New York and Los Angeles. Then the rest of us can have it in limited »
