Friday Rewind: Tubefilter News of the Week - December 26, 2008

26 December 2008 4:48 PM, PST | | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Day after Christmas, and the last Friday of 2008. We hope you all are enjoying some time with your families and away from your untreated internet addictions. This week was also chance for us at Tubefilter to catch up on all those web series we have been covering but fell behind a little. Shame on us. We're talking about series like Valley Peaks (now on episode 7), which is still one of the better genre satires on the web. And there's Agency of Record, which with us being Adobe nuts already, we say really sets the bar for product in integration in web series. It's about creatives at an ad agency—Adobe products are basically as basal as chairs and desks. And for silly almost-adult fun, we caught up with the latest from James Gunn's PG Porn. The Gunn brothers, who playfully called themselves The White Wayans', have made a few »

James Gunn Shows Us His Christmas Peanus!

Genre director James Gunn is ready to spread a little Christmas fear our way with a short film that kind of defies description. Be warned though -- this is not safe for work ... I think!

Watch This: James Gunn Offers Charlie Brown as PG Porn

22 December 2008 10:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Warning: This might be PG, but it might also be Nsfw with its sex faces and raunchy treatment of cartoon characters.

Yes, it's time for Troma icon James Gunn's latest PG Porn, and this time he asks a question I'm sure we all wonder: What would've happened to the Peanuts gang if they grew up? However, rather than just adult content, we get the Peanuts "Peanus"-style, with Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum as Charlie and Belladonna as Lucy Van Pelt.

As per usual, there is no sex, but there is the classic Lucy viciousness. Charlie invites Lucy in, things start to get frisky while Schroeder plays the piano, and then Lucy reverts to her classic jerky self. Seeing Belladonna in action, I'm thinking that Carla Gugino is playing the wrong porn star. But wait -- there's more. If you'd rather have your Peanus in special Christmas doses, Gunn's blog »

The Weekly Wrap-Up: December 13-19, 2008

20 December 2008 12:56 AM, PST | | See recent Dread Central news »

In keeping with the holiday spirit, this week's Wrap-Up is being delivered in verse a la The Twelve Days of Christmas. If anyone else wants to throw out some ideas for The Eight Nights of Chanukah or The Seven Days of Kwanzaa in the comments section below, feel free. And let's not forgot about the winter solstice. While some complain about it being the shortest day of the year, horror fans appreciate the other side of the coin -- the longest night. With so much to celebrate, let's get cooking!

From December 13-19, 2008,

My true love sent to me,

Twelve pairs of 3D glasses (the better to watch the new My Bloody Valentine 3D trailer),

Eleven needless remakes of foreign films hardly anyone's even seen yet (Danish thriller Mørke (Murk) is the most recent casualty of this craze),

Ten long months to wait before we finally get to see The Wolfman »

This Girl Will Be in Saw 6

9 December 2008 | | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Tanedra Howard. Admittedly, I never tuned in to VH1's reality series Scream Queens until last night. (Chalk it up to work, disinterest and my natural loathing of reality programming.) That's when judges James Gunn, Shawnee Smith and John Homa declared the winner of the competition who spent the season vying for the Scream Queen crown and a part in Saw VI . After tears, overcoming fears, a trip to Lionsgate's screening room, a meeting with the studio's Jason Constantine and Twisted Pictures' Mark Burg, and acting in a recreation of a scene from Saw III , the aforementioned Ms. Howard won the hearts of the show's critics and producers. Now she's poised to appear in the sixth Jigsaw flick. The question is: Will Howard have a role to chew on? Or will she be relegated »

Saw VI Scream Queen Chosen

9 December 2008 1:19 AM, PST | | See recent Dread Central news »

I don’t think you guys really realize how much we sacrifice on a daily basis to bring you the news. Here’s an example; I have to talk about a reality show in this story. Sure, it’s a reality show created by James Gunn and full of hot chicks, but a reality show nonetheless.

The show is “Scream Queens”, which has been airing on VH1 all month long. Last night the show’s winner was chosen, and her name is Tanedra Howard. Her prize? She will have a role in the upcoming Saw VI sequel and ... well, that’s about it, actually. Hope it was worth it, Miss Howard!

You can check out some highlights from the show’s finale over on VH1's website if you're so inclined. Don’t worry, we won’t know if you do or don’t so you can feel free to click if you like. »

Feature: Five Rules For Making an Indie Superhero Movie

25 November 2008 2:03 PM, PST | | See recent IFC news »

By Matt Singer

The figure of the superhero does not lend itself to independent movies easily or readily. While three of the top five grossing movies of 2008 center on the escapades of eccentrically dressed and extravagantly empowered individuals, there's a distinct lack of caped crusaders or men of steel for the arthouse crowd. Indie filmmakers may be the most qualified to tackle the spandex set in terms of imagination -- which may be the reason so many former members of their ranks, from Christopher Nolan to Guillermo Del Toro, have produced some of the genre's most memorable entries -- yet they have a special brand of kryptonite to contend with: low budgets.

With that in mind, I've watched as many indie superhero movies as I could find and assembled this easy-to-use list of five rules guaranteed to make yours a massive success. You can thank me later with some points on the gross. »

The Weekly Wrap-Up: November 1-7, 2008

8 November 2008 2:05 PM, PST | | See recent Dread Central news »

Whew! Finally the elections are over, and no matter which side of the political fence you sit on, you can't deny that history has been made. The week of November 1-7, 2008, was full of highs and lows for me; while I was rejoicing at Obama's resounding success, I couldn't help but feel disheartened by the passage of Prop 8 in California and similar measures in other states. We've come so far; yet, there's still a lot of work to be done to ensure equal rights for all. But I know that's not what we're here to talk about. So let's rehash horror's wins and losses over the past seven days.

One upcoming flick that looks like a frontrunner is 100 Feet. Be sure to check out the new clip that showed up online. I don't know about you, but I get a real The Entity vibe off this thing. I can't wait to see if I'm right. »

The Janitor Set to Premiere on Xbox Live

21 October 2008 11:31 AM, PDT | | See recent Dread Central news »

A few months ago we told you about Xbox 360's upcoming series of eight short films under the banner "Horror Directors Do Comedy." With names like James Wan, James Gunn, Lucky McKee, Marcus Nispel, and David Slade attached, it's something we've been looking forward to; and now, finally, the premiere is almost upon us!

Even better, we found out today that the first entry, John Clisham's "The Janitor," is strictly horror (as opposed to a comedy with a horror twist as with the other directors' shorts) that evokes gory 1980’s slashers and stars Jenna (Tamara) Dewan.

"The Janitor" debuts Monday, October 27, on the Xbox Live! Marketplace, but in the meantime you can check out the teaser for it below.

James Gunn Bows to Scream Queens

17 October 2008 2:06 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

VH1, the reigning king of reality TV, is gearing up to launch its newest unscripted monster, Scream Queens. Premiering Monday, October 20 at 10 p.m., the series spotlights 10 unknown actresses who will cry, fight and seduce their way through challenges to prove they have the right stuff to be an iconic horror babe, all while shredding their vocal cords doing it.

Reality television and horror aren’t quite the strange bedfellows they might initially seem. Initially created with the (questionably) best intentions, offering potentially meaningful observations of human behavior, non-fiction TV has disintegrated into absurd, obviously manipulated showcases for wannabe actors and has-been stars performing badly—and VH1 has risen to the top of this dubious food chain with such extravagantly trashy shows as The Surreal Life, Flavor Of Love and Rock Of Love. And while our favorite genre can produce worthy, extremely high-quality films, it has also spawned pure, exploitative—and fun—schlock. »

Scream Queens Battle for Saw VI Role!

I am not totally certain what reality shows have to do with channels that were once dedicated to music, but VH1 isn't about to let logic get in the way.

Saw's Shawnee Smith, filmmaker James Gunn and a rather obscure choice of John Homa make up the panel of judges tasked with decided which of these "actresses" will be cast in Lionsgate's '09 sequel Saw VI. Check out the trailer below ... and pray for mercy!

Countdown: Five People Who Should Star in 'PG Porn'

Filed under: Comedy, Fandom, Home Entertainment

If you like to surf around the web for entertainment news, you might have heard about an upcoming new web project called James Gunn's PG Porn. The writer of classics like Tromeo and Juliet and more shmeh flicks like Scooby Doo 2, Gunn teamed up with his brothers Brian and Sean (Kirk from Gilmore Girls) to create a family-friendly world of porn.

That's right -- vignettes where the delivery man actually delivers what he's supposed to with no added packages. (Read Gunn's take on it here.) Each time, mainstream actors will be teamed with porn stars for these little clips, which will be aired over at First up: Nathan Fillion and Aria Giovanni in Nailing Your Wife. So I wonder: who else could benefit from this insane, and possibly hilarious, idea?

Fischer Finds Love One Year After Divorce

24 September 2008 12:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Jenna Fischer has found love again one year after announcing her divorce from Hollywood filmmaker James Gunn.

The Office star stepped out with new boyfriend, writer Lee Kirk, at the weekend for Sunday's 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

When asked to introduce her companion, Fischer coyly described Kirk as "my super cute boyfriend," adding, "We met through mutual friends. We've actually known each other for a long time. He went to college with an old friend of mine."

And the in-love actress admits she was eager to introduce her new beau to her acting family.

She says, "The Office (U.S. version) is like a second family, so it is an important introduction to me, particularly (co-star) Angela (Kinsey). (Kirk) is a writer and he is originally from Dallas, so Angela immediately liked that I was dating a fellow Texan..

Fischer ended her seven-year marriage to Gunn last September and has been dating Kirk since January. »
