Following the outcry against Pahlaj Nihalani's list of banned words in films issued on Friday, which includes a long list of expletives, Nihalani spoke out to explain why the list (which includes 13 English and 15 Hindi words) had to be sent out, and to whom. Baffled by the protests Nihalani says, "Firstly, I don't know how the list came out in the public domain. We didn't send out the list to the media or even to members of the censor board. When Amitabh Bachchan personally called up every guest for Ilayarajas function

23 January 2015 9:21 PM, PST | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

The event this week to commemorate Ilayaraja's completion of a 1000 movie scores was personally supervised by Amitabh Bachchan. That is how we saw Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, with Sridevi thrown in, on the same platform. Apparently, the two Tamil superstars were hesitant to share the same platform. "Even for Ilayaraja whom both Rajniji and Kamalji revere, they were not willing to come together on the same platform to honour him," says an insider. It was a call to each from Amitabh Bachchan that did the trick. Says the insider, "Bachchan Saab rang up Rajniji and Kamalji and told them how much their presence mattered on that special evening honouring the living legend of Tamil film compositions." Sridevi too received a personal invitation from Amitabh Bachchan. And Gulzar who seldom attends any event, was gently reminded by the Big B of the Sadma connection between Ilaya Sir and Gulzar Saab. »

10. Kill Dil

The soundtrack of Kill Dil was a labour of love from Shaad Ali, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Gulzar. It is clearly apparent from the brilliant mix of tracks delivered. The orchestrations and melodies employed were some of the best ones from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The range of vocal artists ranged from the veterans like Sukwinder Singh to novices like Nihara Joshi making the album all the more enjoyable. Reflections 2014: Top 10 Music Directors/Composers

11 January 2015 12:33 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

2014 was a fantastic year for music in Indian Cinema. We saw a definite shift from formularistic numbers to more nuanced tunes in step with the respective screenplays they would be featured alongside.  Music directors were bold and brave, breaching familiarity and conventions to taking risks and we could not be more mesmerised by the results. Hamlet was adapted to a gritty and raw musical by Vishal Bhardwaj. Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon basically defied gravity by re-creating the magic of Aashiqui 2 with Ek Villian.  Read on as Bollyspice closely chronicles 2014’s top 10 music directors.

10.  Jeet Gangulay

Jeet Gangulay’s Citylights was the silent hit of 2014 with Arjit Singh’s Mukurane becoming a crowd favourite from the get-go followed closely by Mohd. Irfan’s unplugged version of the song. While Youngistan did not do well at the box office, Gangulay’s ‘Sangemarmar’ definitely left a mark. Similarly, ‘Sun Le Zara’ from Singham was equally effective. »
