Film Review: ‘Mirzya’

13 October 2016 8:59 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

By the time the title credit goes up in digital flames after being struck by a flying arrow, it should be clear to viewers that “Mirzya” is no subtle exercise in style. A broad, brash Bollywood romance, juggling Punjab folklore with more contemporary Shakespearean allusions in its two-tiered narrative, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film is so busy in all respects — from its structure to its song score to its poster-paint palette — that one barely has time to make sense of it all. Beneath its absorbing wealth of visual and sonic information, however, an essentially simple tale of love across the class divide grows too diffuse and distracted to stir the heart, while its two parallel stories — separated by centuries, as well as a tonal and aesthetic disparity — never coalesce into a satisfactory mythic dialogue. Despite international festival berths in London and Chicago, potential for a “Devdas”-style crossover is minimal. »

“Mirzya Is A Visual & Emotional Feast” – Subhash K Jha

Mirzya

Starring Harshvardhan KapoorSaiyami Kher

Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Rating: **** ½

Interestingly and curiously—and these are feelings that propped up repeatedly as I watched the maverick movie making magician Mehra’s fifth directorial pilgrimage into the mysteries of cinema—Mirzya doesn’t mention its debut making lead pair as ‘Introducing’…

That’s because continuity and renewal are critical to Mehra’s vision of cinema. He moves, no he glides, from one era to another without punctuation marks in pursuit of that uncorrupted core of humanism which makes life worth living even in the worst of times (and honestly, it can’t get any worse than now, can it?).

Mirzya is a  very simple yet extremely layered love legend. The lovers here face what lovers everywhere have faced since love was discovered in the human heart. As in Rang De Basanti, Mehra creates two level of storytelling, one that »

‘Mirzya’ Review: Lush Bollywood Romance Spans Disparate Time Periods With Unease

6 October 2016 2:00 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

There’s a good reason why epic love stories are almost always set in ancient times. Something about how we can only conjure these bygone eras in our imaginations allows us to fully buy into the grandeur, magnitude and theatrics that usually characterize these sagas. It’s rare to successfully make that level of passion and scale hold up in a modern day framework. While director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and writer Gulzar are particularly good bets for storytellers who can try — the former blurred the lines between past and present in his BAFTA-nominated “Rang De Basanti,” while the latter has been penning screenplays and song lyrics since 1960 — even the duo can’t quite make it work with “Mirzya.” The film’s contemporary setting does little to enhance the age-old tale at Mirzya’s core or make it approachable for current audiences.

Mirzya Movie Review

6 October 2016 12:02 PM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya. After watching a stage performance of Mirza-Sahibhan 35 years ago, Mirzya was born. I had the privilege of watching this film a week in advance. I have avoided all publicity about this film as I didn’t want to go in with any expectations. This is difficult in a way as this is a Rakesh Omprakash Mehra directed film. He is back since the incredibly successful Bhaag Milka Bhaag. I have sat with my thoughts of this film for four days. Normally I don’t. Normally reviews as far as they go are fairly straight forward. This one isn’t. Why? Well there are so many different elements to it and you just need a little bit of time to make your mind up about it.

Let us start with the much talked about music. Shankar Ehsaan and Loy do something different here and it suits Mirzya. »

Harshvardhan Kapoor on Mirzya: “For a first film I couldn’t have asked for a more enriching experience”

6 October 2016 12:00 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Harshvardhan Kapoor is ready to hit the big screen and his first film is an epic one! Son of Anil Kapoor and brother to Sonam and Rhea, the young man certainly has acting in his blood and he now prepares to show off his talent in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya.

A timeless folktale about star-crossed lovers is uniquely told in two parallel worlds, one real, and one fantastical. Set in modern day Rajasthan, the musical is also played out in the mountains of Ladakh where the Punjabi folktale comes to life. The lovers grapple with forces that seek to keep them apart in both avatars but they discover that even a moment of true love is worth an entire lifetime.

In a wonderful conversation Harvarshdhan Kapoor talked with Stacey about preparing for this dual role, finding his characters and then bringing them both to life onscreen. Plus so much more! »

This ageless epic is directed by the BAFTA Awards nominee & 3-time National Award recipient Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and is brought to life in the words of famed poet and lyricist Dadasaheb Phalke recipient and Oscar winner – Gulzar. Baloch Pakistani sufi singers for Rakeysh Mehras Mirzya

9 September 2016 9:12 AM, PDT | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Mirzya is a full-blown musical with composer Shankar Mahadevan along with his partners Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendosa, pulling out all stops to make the legendary love tale of Mirza and Sahibaan as epic in proportion as possible. The title song alone involved the blended talents of Sufi singers from India, Pakistan and Balochistan. While Daler Mehndi and the upcoming young Sufi singers The Nooran sisters, Jyoti and Sultan from Jalandhar comprise the Indian contingent of singers for the title track, from Pakistan came the legendary Sufi singer Sain Zahoor who sings predominantly at religious shrines. That isn't all. The internationally celebrated Balochi folk singer Akhtar Chanal Zahri also flew in to pitch in for the title song giving a kind of epic heft to Gulzar's lyrics. Quite a full house, one must say. Says Shankar Mahadevan, "Sain Zahoor is an interesting character! His look itself is so amazing. »

Mirzya’s Teen Gawah Hain Ishq Ke Song Out Now

The next song from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s poignant tragic love story is out, Teen Gawah Hain Ishq Ke, a moving love song talking about the complete isolation of true love between two soul mates who dared to love.

The film is based on the legend of Mirza-Sahiban, a popular Punjabi folklore. And in recreating this legend, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya has been exquisitely shot in the bleak and desolate terrain of Ladakh and the vibrancy of colourful Rajasthan, which heightens the contrast between the two worlds of folklore and contemporary, yet are interwoven very intricately to bring out the story of a legend that will never die. The eternal love story resonates even today in the modern day world of Rajasthan in 2016, as seen in this song, and is a befitting testimony to two eternal and rebellious lovers.
