Plot: Anna (Browning) has been recuperating in a mental hospital after a tragedy that took her mother’s life. She returns home to find that her father (Strathairn) has taken up with her deceased mother’s nurse (Banks) and both Anna and her sister, Alex (Kebbel), begin to suspect the mother’s death was no accident.

Who’s It For? Fans of ghost stories and anyone who wants to see Elizabeth Banks drop all traces of cute and take on the role of wily seductress.

Movie:

The ghost story is my greatest love among the sundry genres, which means I’m much pickier when it comes to simply being entertained. If I hadn’t sat through The Uninvited while compulsively comparing it to its excellent sibling, A Tale of Two Sisters, »

The Uninvited - Blu-ray Review

17 May 2009 7:22 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Although it is light on scares, The Uninvited manages to entertain thanks to a twist ending that you might not see coming. The PG-13 rating keeps the film.s thrills light, but the plot will hold your interest . even if it is safe to watch with the lights off. The Uninvited was directed by Charles Guard and Thomas Guard and was written by Craig Rosenberg, Doug Miro, and Carlo Bernard. It is based on Ji-woon Kim's film "Changhwa, Hongryon." The Hollywood version stars Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, David Strathairn, and Elizabeth Banks. The film opens with Browning.s character Anna in the mental hospital following an attempted suicide after her mother died. Her mother (Maya Massar) had been suffering from »

Blu-Ray Review: Decline All Offers to See ‘The Uninvited’

5 May 2009 7:09 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0 Chicago – Why does Hollywood keep screwing with Asian horror movies? Yes, Gore Verbinski’s “The Ring” was an effective adaptation of “Ringu,” but what the mini-genre of the ‘Asian horror remake’ has wrought since then has been downright terrifying. Take for example the truly horrific “The Uninvited,” a movie notable only in that it’s so much worse than its source material that maybe it will finally put an end to this ignominious trend.

I’ve seen a lot of Asian horror and most remakes pale in comparison, but I thought I’d try something new with “The Uninvited,” now available on Blu-Ray and DVD. I thought perhaps I was romanticizing my brief obsession with those original films when I had to review remakes like the “The Grudge,” “Pulse,” “The Eye,” and “Shutter” and thought I should do an original-remake double feature this time. Big mistake.

Review: "The Uninvited"

1 February 2009 10:17 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: January 31, 2009

The players: Directors: Thomas Guard, Charles Guard, Writers: Doug Miro, Craig Rosenberg, Cast: Elizabeth Banks, David Strathairn, Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel

Facts of interest: Based on Kim Jee-Woon's "A Tale of Two Sisters."

The plot: Two sisters try everything they can to convince their father that his new girlfriend is not the person she pretends to be.

Our thoughts: Charles and Thomas Guard’s “The Uninvited” is yet another lame, unnecessary horror remake that lacks suspense and falls victim to a nearly disastrous script. No matter how bad these flicks are, they just keep coming, and it’s annoying me now more than ever. »

If you are going to see this film no matter what I say, read the first paragraph and go see it and then return to read the review. Otherwise, the full review is certain to help you make up your mind. There's only one way to review The Uninvited and give thinking audiences a fair chance of enjoying the film and that is to tell you to continually ask yourself, "What is going on?" Never settle with a decision and keep asking questions. Things are not necessarily as they seem, »

Three distinct genres try their luck. After debuting earlier this year in France, 20th Century Fox finally releases the eagerly anticipated crime actioner "Taken" on January 30th. The intense film is helmed by Pierre Morel, known for the indie gem "District B13" and helmer of the upcoming "From Paris with Love" starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. "Taken" stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen and Jon Gries and is written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. What's it about? “I don’t know you who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you’re looking for a ransom, I can tell you, I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills acquired over a very long career in the shadows, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, »
