Gandolfini, Monteith, Stapleton, Winters and Goldberg To Receive Special Tributes at Emmys

James Gandolfini, Cory Monteith, Jean Stapleton, Jonathan Winters and Gary David Goldberg will receive special tributes during CBS’ broadcast of the Primetime Emmys on Sept. 22.

Each of the tributes, which will come in addition to the traditional In Memoriam segment, will be delivered by a colleague who had a close relationship with them.

For Gandolfini, it will be “The Sopranos” co-star Edie Falco. Former “Family Ties” star Michael J. Fox will pay tribute to Goldberg, the show’s exec producer. “All in the Family” co-star Rob Reiner will honor Stapleton, Jane Lynch of “Glee” will remember Monteith and Robin Williams will be the one for his former “Mork and Mindy” mate Winters.

Live From the Creative Arts Emmys

Nearly 80 awards are scheduled to be presented at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony today at the Nokia Theatre, beginning shortly after 4 p.m Pacific. We’ll be live-blogging the highlights, so keep coming back for updates.

Fxx will air an edited version of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. Eastern/Pacific.

Past, present and future “Community” showrunner Dan Harmon is joining series star Joel McHale in presenting the first quartet of Emmys, including three for casting and one for guest comedy actress. The final two Emmys, for reality host and reality program, will be announced by next week’s Primetime Emmys host, Neil Patrick Harris.

A couple handfuls of juried Emmys were announced in August, including kudos for “Adventure Time,” “Portlandia,” “The Simpsons” and the Alex Gibney documentary “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God.”

'Doctor Who': Robbie Williams was almost the Doctor

Imagine a world where Take That singer Robbie Williams was the Doctor. What a different "Doctor Who" that would be. Well, that was almost the case at a certain point.

It's revealed in a new DVD documentary that Williams was in the running to voice the Doctor in the 2003 animated web series, "Scream of the Shalka." The news comes from Blogtor Who, which reports that both sides were interested. According to producer Muirinn Lane Kelly, "We got word that Robbie Williams was interested in playing The Doctor. We all sat around wondering, 'Is this a good idea? Is this a crazy idea?'"

In the end Williams wasn't available and the role went to Richard E. Grant. Still, James Gross, another producer, says, "Think about it, if you really wanted to bring 'Doctor Who' to a whole new audience, it would have been the most popular, talked-about thing the BBC website ever did. »
