Born Aug. 27, 1920, on an Iowa farm between Clive and Waukee, his parents, James Clifford Lenhart, a butcher, and Esther May Taylor, named their son James Burton Lenhart. The family moved to Des Moines when "Burt" was 9 and lived on the south side, where the boy attended Park Avenue Elementary School.
