Like most children of the 1970s, television viewing was a big part of my week. Beginning at 7:30 Pm and ending two and-a-half hours later, my family’s Thursday nights consisted of That’s Hollywood, Mork and Mindy, Angie, Barney Miller, and Carter Country. Not having seen Barney Miller until well into its sixth season, I just assumed that the entire show took place in the police station. Now that the show’s entire series is available in a DVD box set, courtesy of the fine folks at Shout! Factory, my initial impressions of the show were proven wrong. The pilot episode features Barney Miller’s family, specifically his wife, played with charm by Barbara Barrie. Abe Vigoda, Maxwell Gail, and Ron Glass appear from the get-go, and guest star Chu Chu Malave, who played Maria’s boyfriend who tackles »

Exploring The Twilight Zone #69: The Passerby

9 September 2011 10:18 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

With the entire original run of The Twilight Zone available to watch instantly, we’re partnering with Twitch Film to cover all of the show’s 156 episodes. Are you brave enough to watch them all with us? The Twilight Zone (Episode #69): “The Passerby” (airdate 10/06/61) The Plot:  A Confederate soldier rests for a spell on the front porch owned by Lavinia Goodwin – a widow who watches hundreds of soldiers pass by on their march home from the war. The Goods: Season 3 is shaping up to be the strongest season. There are iconic episodes from others, of course, but so far there’s been nothing but quality from the third outing, and it represents a kind of maturity in the writing (which has thankfully gotten away from padding huge chunks of the script) and in the kind of actors that they can hire to guest star. More than just a clever concept, this »

New Release: Barney Miller Complete Series DVD

24 August 2011 3:01 PM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Release Date: Oct. 25, 2011

Price: DVD $159.99

Studio: Shout! Factory

New York City's 12th Precinct is abuzz in Barney Miller.

Airing on ABC TV from 1974 through 1982, Barney Miller remains one of television’s liveliest New York-based situation comedies of the 1970s. That said, Barney Miller: The Complete Series has a lot of life pumping through its veins!

The classic show is set in a New York City police station in Greenwich Village, a colorful, bustling place filled with a mix of cops, detectives and administrators of a whole lot of ethnic and racial types (Puerto Ricans, Jews, African-Americans, Asians, Poles, you name it).

Hal Linden stars in the series as the titular Barney Miller. As the precinct’s captain, Barney somehow manages to maintain order over this group of inner-city law enforcers, who are undeniably good at their jobs but are always looking for something else to do. (A little gambling, »

Our five favorite least friendly movie monkeys

4 August 2011 11:08 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Friendly monkeys in film do exist. Unfortunately, humanity receives a rude wake-up call this week in director Rupert Wyatt's "Rise of the Planet of the Ape," and the rebooted film franchise, based on Pierre Boulle's "Planet of the Apes" novel, features some highly intelligent, highly ticked off monkeys.

Humans have fought this battle before on the big screen, though. Many of the meanest movie monkeys had good reason to be irked, like explorers invading their homes, psycho magical witches giving them commands and being kidnapped. Here are our picks for the five least friendly monkeys among them.

5. The winged monkeys, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939)

They look happy and care-free, but these little blue slaves to the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) rip apart Dorothy's (Judy Garland) friend The Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) and whisk her off to be imprisoned in a big, scary castle. They may dress in snappy red vests, »

A "Planet of the Apes" primer

2 August 2011 10:56 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

This Friday sees the release of the first "Planet of the Apes" film in a decade, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" starring James Franco. We'll have our review of the film up on Friday, but to help set the mood, here is a revised and updated version of a feature we first brought you in 2008 on the 40th anniversary of the original "Planet of the Apes." Below you'll find a guide to all six previous movies, with synopses, spoilers, continuity errors, and a celebration of all the high-minded social commentary and low-brow schlocky ape masks that make the "Apes" films one of the most satisfying of all sci-fi franchises.

Please note: Most "Planet of the Apes" films have a "shocking" twist that everyone at this point already knows. However, if you have somehow extricated yourself from forty years of pop culture references, by all means be wary of Spoilers ahead. »

Evolution of the Planet Of The Apes franchise

25 July 2011 11:24 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Movie sagas never die; they always come back every so often and in one form or another, and 2011 sees the cinematic revival of a very famous and enduring science fiction genre.

By effectively reversing Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, Monkey Planet is more of a satirical look at modern life and less of a science fiction story. Globetrotting journalist Ulysse Merou accompanies his friend Professor Antelle and physicist Arthur Levain on a space journey to the Betelgeuse quadrant of the Galaxy. Their ship lands on a planet similar to Earth, which the professor names Soror (Latin for sister).

Shortly after landing, the ship is destroyed by a tribe of primitive humans who also capture the astronauts. The tribe is later attacked by a hunting party of apes dressed in 20th Century clothes, driving trucks and carrying guns. Levain is killed during the hunt and Merou is caught and taken to an ape city, »

17 May 2011 8:02 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Twentieth Century Fox & MGM released an onslaught of catalog titles on Blu-ray, many for the first time, on May 10th, and most seem well-timed to the upcoming Father’s Day holiday. The company was kind enough to send us a sample of the ten titles and it seems like this will be an odd mix, from which you can surely choose at least one or two faves.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

First, the titles we Didn’T get that may interest readers — “The Terminator,” “Hotel Rwanda,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Dead Man Walking,” “The Horse Soldiers,” and “Rocky.”

The Usual Suspects

We received a wonderful sampler pack of classics that included “The Usual Suspects,” “The Manchurian Candidate,” “The Misfits,” and “Some Like It Hot.” All four films are excellent and worth owning for any serious movie fan, but the quality of the Blu-ray releases differs.
