Ray Stevenson was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, raised in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Northumberland, and now lives in Ibiza.

The 47-year-old attracted Hollywood's attention when he appeared in TV series Rome. His big-screen credits include two Marvel Comics adaptations - he played the vigilante title role in Punisher: Warzone and was the rotund Asgardian warrior Volstagg in Kenneth Branagh's Thor.

He's in the upcoming G.I. Joe sequel and will next be seen on screen in The Three Musketeers.

Ray's new film Kill The Irishman was released on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday (September 26) by Anchor Bay Entertainment. Thor was released on the same day in the same formats, and The Three Musketeers gets a UK cinema release on October 12.

DVD Review: Kill the Irishman

Kill The Irishman

Stars: Ray Stevenson, Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, Vincent D’Onofrio, Linda Cardellini | Written by Jonathan Hensleigh, Jeremy Walters | Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh

Kill the Irishman is the true story of the rise and fall of Danny Greene, an Irish thug who worked with Cleveland’s mobsters during the 1970s. Ray Stevenson plays the lead, alongside Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken and Vincent D’Onofrio.

The similarities between this film and any number Martin Scorsese films are numerous. Kill the Irishman begins with a flash forward to an attack on Greene, a car bomb no less. Scorsese tried that one with Casino. Aside from that, it follows the tried and tested, from nothing to everything plot of the gangster genre. It just doesn’t so it as well as it could have or should have. Everything from the filmmaking to the acting just doesn’t pull through and ultimately »

James Reviews Jonathan Hensleigh’s Kill The Irishman [Blu-ray Review]

16 July 2011 9:45 PM, PDT | CriterionCast | See recent CriterionCast news »

When I heard about the film Kill the Irishman, I thought Jonathan Hensleigh had it out for me. I liked plenty of Hensleigh’s previous penned films, such as Criterion alumni Armageddon, along with Die Hard With a Vengeance, The Saint (even though this was rewritten to a very bare bones version), Jumanji (I was young once) and even his adaptation of The Punisher with Thomas Jane was a fun present day western, about one man’s loss and getting the revenge he believe he deserves. But after that film failed to make any money at the box office, Hensleigh fell back a bit and made Welcome to the Jungle, a very forgettable film, so much so that it was designated to Dimension Extreme’s home video line. But when I saw the cast list announced way back when, with Ray Stevenson playing the Irishman himself Danny Greene accompanied by Val Kilmer, »

Kill The Irishman Blu-ray Review

27 June 2011 1:43 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In the 1970s, the city of Cleveland played host to a turf war between the Italian mafia and an Irish crime syndicate headed by Danny Greene. In Kill the Irishman, Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) plays the titular Celtic warrior in a biopic based on true events. Writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh (The Punisher) allows Stevenson to tread ambiguous moral ground in his portrayal of Greene, but the movie tends to lean towards establishing Greene as a folk hero instead of a murderous criminal. Hit the jump for my review. Kill the Irishman starts off with a bang…literally. Greene (Stevenson) is cruising down the street in his Kelly-green suit and matching Cadillac when he narrowly avoids being killed by a car bomb hidden in his dashboard. This really is a perfect stage setting scene for Kill the Irishman, as over 35 explosions occurred in Cleveland during this time period, earning it the newspaper moniker, »

New On DVD/Blu-ray: Kill The Irishman

14 June 2011 4:20 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

The Movie: “Kill the Irishman” tells the true-life story of Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson), a legendary Cleveland gangster and folk hero. In the 1970s Greene and a rag tag group of modern day Celtic warriors waged war against the Italian mob in Northern Ohio. The most obvious comparison for “Irishman” is “Goodfellas”, another film that traces the rise of a figure in organized crime from childhood, through the early stages of his criminal career, into the glory days, and his ultimate downfall. Green was most notable for being the man the mob couldn’t kill. Seriously, the guy was like a freaking cat he had so many lives. At one point a house falls on him and he walks away unscathed. He survives bullets, stabbings, and car bombs. Bombs are the apparent weapon of choice in this particular region, and in one summer, no less than 36 go off. There is »

Exclusive: Vincent D'Onofrio Talks Kill the Irishman

Vincent D'Onofrio talks Kill the Irishman, his rapport with the remarkable cast, his upcoming directorial debut, Law & Order: Criminal Intent's final season, and more.

Vincent D'Onofrio has always been an actor I have admired for the diversity of roles he picks, and how he often disappears within his characters. His breakthrough year was 1987 where he appeared as the memorable Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket and in a much different but equally memorable turn as "Thor" in Adventures In Babysitting. He hasn't stopped working since, with an impressive filmography ranging from obscure indie's like the fantastic film The Salton Sea, sci-fi blockbusters like Men In Black and comedies like The Break-Up. Not only that, but he continued to rack up film credits even while starring on the hit NBC/USA Network drama Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
