Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez’s latest romp, “How to Be a Latin Lover” is set to become Pantelion Film’s widest release ever in the U.S., likely to more than double the Televisa-Lionsgate joint venture’s release standard of 350 to 400 screens when it opens on April 28.
Videocine, the film distribution arm of Televisa, will be rolling the comedy out to some 2,500 screens in Mexico on May 5.
“We are expecting this film to deliver, it’s got heart and a highly promotable cast,” said Pantelion COO Edward Allen.
Comedy centers on an ageing Latin Lothario, played by Derbez, who’s made a living out of seducing rich, older women. When he’s dumped by his wealthy 80-year old wife for a younger stud, he’s forced to move in with his estranged sister, played by Salma Hayek, and her son with whom he bonds. Other cast members include Raquel Welch, »

Splash, Ocean’s Eight and the female-led 21 Jump Street spinoff are just some of the many gender-swapped properties incubating in various stages of development, and Variety brings word today of another: Overboard.
First released in 1987, Garry Marshall’s romcom originally starred Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, and Edward Herrmann, and though the idea of a modern-day remake has been floated before – at a time when Jennifer Lopez and Kathrine Heigl were in contention to star – Overboard has finally locked down its two principal actors: Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez. The latter is on board to play one of Mexico’s wealthiest playboys, who takes a tumble from his extravagant boat only to fall into the lap of Anna Faris’ single, working-class mother. Following a literal fall from grace, Derbez’s forgetful lead is under the impression that he is, in fact, the husband of Faris’ character. Cue the romantic shenanigans.

MGM has brought on Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez to star in the studio's remake of the 1987 comedy classic Overboard, which starred Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Pantelion Films is also producing this comedy remake, which is already aiming to start production this May in Vancouver. This new comedy takes the conceit from the original classic, though and turns it on its ear.
The original movie followed Goldie Hawn as a snobby, wealthy woman who suffers a head injury when she falls off of her yacht, and is taken to the hospital by a working-class carpenter, played by Kurt Russell. When she wakes up in the hospital, she has amnesia, with the carpenter convincing the woman that she is his wife. This reboot flips the script, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Eugenio Derbez playing a spoiled playboy from one of Mexico's wealthiest families, who falls off his yacht and becomes convinced by a single, »
