Shailene Woodley celebrates 'Fault in Our Stars' but let's talk Laura Dern shall we?

20 November 2014 7:10 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Beverly Hills — It's that time of year, when studios reunite cast and crew from some of their earlier releases to attract a little awards season spotlight. Today, 20th Century Fox had a swanky afternoon lunch at Craft to celebrate "The Fault in Our Stars." The film's premier awards player in the Best Actress race, Shailene Woodley, was on hand as was Ansel Elgort, screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, Laura Dern, producer Wyck Godfrey and the novel's author John Green. Most notably, you realize how important this film is to the studio and how proud they are of it when Jim Gianopulos, the Chairman and CEO, takes time out of his busy day to sit down for lunch with the cast and press on hand. "Fault" was a box office phenomenon earning over $304 million worldwide off a budget of just $12 million. Green joked with me that he felt almost »

Amazon-Hachette Dispute Over as Companies Announce New Deal

13 November 2014 10:08 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Amazon and Hachette's monthslong dispute is over. The companies have reached a new multiyear agreement covering e-book and print sales in the U.S. The two companies were reportedly in a standoff over e-book revenues, with the online retailer reportedly delaying shipments, reducing discounts and preventing people from preordering Hachette titles. Several Hachette authors, including Stephen Colbert, Stephen King and John Green, condemned Amazon's actions. Colbert even devoted a segment on his show in June to bashing the online retailer. The ice seemed to have thawed for Colbert, though, as he recently, reluctantly, told viewers they could buy

26 Surprising but Not-So-Scary Facts About Halloween

29 October 2014 5:16 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

If somebody told me an interesting fact like, “Hey, this the same house where that sexy group of teens was murdered exactly 30 years ago,” I would probably end my Halloween celebration early and make a beeline for the door. (Although, that’s probably the very thing the killer wants me to do… Scratch that plan. I’m gonna stay at that party and wander around the woods behind the house. Nothing bad ever happened out in nature at night during a full moon, right?) If you’re looking for some interesting facts that won’t have you on edge during the holiday celebration, Mental Floss’ John Green has you covered. In this episode of List Show, Green shares 26 not-so-scary facts about Halloween, like how the tradition of trick or treating started, what the original name for candy corn was, and why women used to put the apples they bobbed for under their pillows at night. »

Elliott Morgan’s Mental Floss Web Series Debunks Common Misconceptions

17 October 2014 11:43 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

After building its YouTube channel around a flagship program hosted by John Green and then expanding its reach through a separate program hosted by Craig Benzine, Mental Floss has now turned to Elliott Morgan. Morgan is the host of a new web series called Misconceptions, which seeks to clear the air about factoids that are often misunderstood. The first episode is out to debunk "Misconceptions You Learned in School" through a ten-item list of inaccurate beliefs. Some of these "misconceptions", such as the idea that Columbus thought the Earth was flat, are not actually believed by very many people above the age of 10. Others, such as the (apparently false) claim that toilet water flushes in a different direction in the Southern Hemisphere, are more widely held. Morgan has popped up on several different channels since he left his role as a SourceFed host back in April. He has been active on his personal channel, »

Managing Editor

The Fault in Our Stars features Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus “Gus” Waters, two teens who meet at a cancer-survivor support group. Though Hazel is initially skeptical about getting close to Gus and warns him of her worsening condition, Gus still falls for her. As the two fall in love, Gus relapses, and he dies shortly after they return from their romantic trip to Amsterdam. The adaptation of John Green’s novel of the same name was a box-office smash and has earned Woodley some Oscar buzz. Should Woodley receive a nomination for this role, she would join the list of best actress nominees who have been nominated for their roles in heartbreaking films.

Some of the most well-known tragic love stories didn’t score any leading actress nominations, though. For example, Natalie Wood was not nominated for her »

Wheezy Waiter Answers Questions In New Series On Mental Floss Channel

2 September 2014 9:52 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Thanks to the charismatic personality of John Green, Mental Floss has established a large YouTube audience to complement the print publication of the same name. Since the channel's April 2013 launch, Green's list show has served as its main attraction, but Mental Floss has now added another brainy option for its viewers. Craig Benzine (who is best known to YouTube viewers as Wheezy Waiter) is the host of The Big Question, a series that answers tricky fan-submitted queries. In the first episode of The Big Question, Benzine responds to a fan who wants to know how caffeinated coffee beans can be used in decaffeinated beverages. He explains that, in most cases, the decaffeination process doesn't actually take out 100% of caffeine, so tread carefully if, for some reason beyond my coffee-addled understanding, you're looking to cut caffeine out of your diet entirely. As a host, Benzine seems a little stiff, especially without »
