By John M. Whalen

Kill or Be Killed” (2015) aka “Red on Yella, Kill a Fella,” is a low budget horror-western released on DVD by Rlj Entertainment that also attempts to be a tribute to the spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s and Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” The plot is about a gang of outlaws in the year 1900 traveling 500 miles through Texas to get to a stash of gold that’s hidden at the bottom of a well in the sand dunes of Galveston Beach. The group is hounded on their journey by a mysterious being and one by one the gang members get picked off.

Like Peckinpah’s Wild Bunch these outlaws are a motley crew. Their leader, Claude “Sweet Tooth” Barbee, played by co-writer/director Justin Meeks, is very loosely based on real-life outlaw Sam Bass. As Meeks portrays him, Barbee is a man obsessed with »

Icons of Fright Talks Westerns and More With Kill Or Be Killed Directors Justin Meeks & Duane Graves

The western subgenre has seen somewhat of a resurgence lately, with films like Quentin Tarantino’s Hateful 8 and S. Craig Zahler’s shocking Bone Tomahawk. Hitting the market (available on DVD now) and adding to that resurgence, is directors Justin Meeks and Duane Graves’ excellent entry, Kill Or Be Killed.  Revolving around a group of outlaws trying to find a big score all while being picked off one by one, the film is bloody and full of entertainment, from start to finish.

We had a chat with Meeks and Graves about the film, its entry into the western genre and much more, so read on!

The Western subgenre is having such a great resurgence of sorts lately, with really good entries like Bone Tomahawk, Diablo, The Hateful 8 and so non. What inspired you to make Kill Or Be Killed? It’s very unique.

Meeks: Well, we wrote and filmed »

Well look-e here my creeps; none other than Kill Or Be Killed‘s Die-rector slash writers Justin Meeks and Duane Graves have just rolled into the Crypt o’ Xiii like a couple o’ tumblin’ tumbleweeds!

Famous Monsters. Welcome to the Crypt! Let’s just jump right in; what inspired ya to create Kill Or Be Killed?

Justin Meeks. I have always had a special place in my heart for westerns, and a burning desire to make one. Sergio Leone, Clint Eastwood, Peckinpah, and others have brought their visions into my living room many times. So, after our film Wild Man Of The Navidad was sold at Tribeca, we had a meeting with the Weinstein Co. They were  interested in what was on the back burner, and we pitched them a rough idea for Kill Or Be Killed, untitled at the time. They seem to love it, and that inspired Duane »

DVD Review: Horror Western Kill Or Be Killed

Texas-shot gore western Kill Or Be Killed is a bloody blast. If S. Craig Zahler’s indie gore western sleeper Bone Tomahawk was like the bastard offspring of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah (with a dose of Ruggero Deodato’s DNA swirling around in the inception cocktail), writer/directors Justin Meeks and Duane Graves’ (Butcher Boys) indie oater…

We have been given a clip to share with you, which involves a bloody shootout. And where there are a lot of guns there will eventually be a smattering of dead people too. Good times. Claude "Sweet Tooth" Barbee and his gang of cutthroat outlaws - the most wanted men in Texas - are on a desperate ride across five hundred miles of badlands to recover a fortune in hidden loot from their most daring robbery.
