It’s not every day that the most consistent character on your favorite show loses her grasp on reality, but that’s exactly what fans were reunited with when The Vampire Diaries returned tonight after a month-long hiatus. Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola), even as a vampire without her humanity was managing to fair exceptionally well considering the circumstances. At least, better than any of her friends, that’s for sure. That is, until Stefan (Paul Wesley) crossed the metaphorical line in the sand that she had drawn and joined her on the darker side.
Since Stefan is Caroline’s trigger, it makes sense that the writers would choose to prolong her current state by establishing a clear cut roadblock in her friends’ path to restoring her humanity. The easiest way to create that diversion was to take Stefan out of the equation. Except the writers didn’t just want to simply delay the inevitable. »

For seasons, yes, plural, the writers of The Vampire Diaries relied heavily on the idea of the mysterious ‘other side.’ They used it as a stomping ground for characters who had come and gone, a way to bridge the gap between the living and dead. It was just as easy to bring someone back to “life” when the story needed a little help, as it was to temporarily kill someone off. With the collapse of the other side in the season five finale, it seemed like the potential to catch up with supernaturals from the past via anything but flashbacks was gone – but it turned out that wasn’t entirely the case.
The writers are still sticking to their guns and keeping those sucked into oblivion with the annihilation of their former supernatural purgatory firmly tucked away, but they have come up with a creative alternative. Although fan favorites that »

All hell is breaking loose -- again!
After last week's visually stunning, and darkly manipulative episode, we're now left with a Vampire Diaries first: Both Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) have embraced their blood-thirsty and emotionless sides, and they're a potentially deadly combination for Mystic Falls trouble.
Luckily, it appears that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has the perfect plan to flip their humanity switches – and only ETonline has your exclusive sneak peek.
News: Ian Somerhalder’s Brilliant Directorial Debut Will Leave You Speechless!
"We need Kai to get to 1903, and we need Bennett blood to do the damn spell," Damon explains to an extremely pissed-off Bonnie (Kat Graham). "Listen, we do in, we grab my mom, she flips Stefan's switch, he triggers Caroline. Emotional dominoes — Yay! Everybody wins."
But will Damon's seemingly perfect plan work on the first try? Of course not – this is Tvd, people! But it will certainly make for some amazing entertainment to watch »
