Netflix has never been shy about putting experimental TV on its platform, as seen with interactive specials like “Bandersnatch.” Now, the streamer is playing with the medium’s episodic format with “Kaleidoscope,” a new anthology series set to premiere New Year’s Day.
“Kaleidoscope” is loosely inspired by a real-life story of 70 billion in bonds gone missing in Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy, focusing on a group of thieves as they undergo a multi-decade-long plan to pull off the perfect heist on a seemingly unbreakable vault. The first season features eight episodes, with each installment bouncing around a 24-year timeline from when the crew’s preparations began to six months after the heist day itself.
Uniquely, with the exception of the finale — which depicts the actual heist itself — every episode of the series is designed to be watched in any order, and the show randomizes the experience so that each viewer...

A new Netflix anthology is on the way and it's likely to put a spin on your typical water cooler discussions. "Kaleidoscope" is certainly the kind of show you'll want to unpack with your friends: it's got high stakes, lots of intrigue, a mystery, and action-packed criminal hijinks. There's just one problem. Should you discuss the miniseries with someone before either of you has finished, you'll quickly realize that something is off: neither of you will have seen the same episodes.
"Kaleidoscope" isn't your average Netflix series — it's an immersive experience. Unlike most shows, this series was designed to be watched in any possible order. In fact, Netflix itself will be scrambling the episodes so that each viewer watches the series unfold in a different way.
While this is certainly a new approach for the streamer, this non-linear series isn't too far off from its prior experimental endeavors. The streaming...

The Oscars have announced that 276 feature films are eligible for this year’s Academy Awards, with nomination voting set to begin Thursday, Jan. 27 until Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Last year, the Academy extended the eligibility year until Feb. 28, 2021 due to the pandemic, which produced 366 eligible films, the largest number of submissions since 1970. With only 10 months in this period, 2022’s eligibility list is on par with previous submission years.
All of the presumed Oscar contenders are on the list including “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon Studios), “Belfast” (Focus Features), “C’mon C’mon” (A24), “Candyman” (Universal Pictures), “Coda” (Apple Original Films), “Dune” (Warner Bros), “Encanto” (Walt Disney Pictures), “House of Gucci” (MGM/United Artists Releasing), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), “Parallel Mothers” (Sony Pictures Classics), “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount Pictures), “Spencer” (Neon/Topic Studios), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony Pictures) and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios).

The Forever Purge, the fifth movie in the Purge franchise, gives the basic set-up a little tweak but otherwise delivers more of the same, namely angry violence mixed with on-the-nose social commentary. As such, it’s watchable enough, but the formula is definitely wearing thin, perhaps because the world itself has gotten so much worse since the series began in 2013.
This time round, the New Founding Fathers of America announce that there will once again be a Purge Night, a 12 hour period where all crime is legal, up to and including murder. This is bad news for recent Mexican immigrants Adela (Ana de la Reguera) and Juan (Tenoch Huerta), who already face enough racial tension in their day-to-day lives in Texas.

Update: Universal’s F9 is gearing up to hit the $500M mark globally, a milestone it will cross on Monday as it becomes the first Hollywood movie to do so during the pandemic era, and the first since any studio film originally released during 2019. The Justin Lin-helmed title will also join China’s Hi, Mom and Detective Chinatown 3 as only the third film of any provenance to get there in 2020 and 2021. The worldwide cume through Sunday is $491.5M. This includes domestic‘s $24M three-day.
F9’s $23.8M international box office weekend was powered by No. 1 starts in five new markets including Spain where the film set pandemic records — despite competition for eyeballs with Euro 2020 — and came in ahead of Hobbs & Shaw. The overseas total is now $374.4M in 50 offshore markets. The IMAX global cume is projected at $35M through Monday. The Toretto family still has France, Germany, Japan and Italy to come.

This article contains spoilers for The Forever Purge.
The Purge franchise has been astonishingly successful since the series — which now incorporates five movies and two seasons of TV — launched in 2013 with the eponymous first movie. As of this writing, the saga has racked up $460 million in worldwide box office receipts, against a combined budget for all five films of a reported $53 million.
That’s a damn good return on investment, especially for an R-rated, graphically violent, politically charged, and often bleak narrative. So it was somewhat unexpected when Purge creator James DeMonaco — who has written all five films and directed the first three — hinted to EW in 2018 that the fifth entry in the franchise would likely be the last.
But now, it seems, DeMonaco’s remarks might have been a little premature. Den of Geek asked Blumhouse Productions president Jason Blum, producer of the entire series, if this was indeed the end of the line,...

DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and Blumhouse and Universal’s “The Forever Purge” both netted $1.3 million each in Thursday previews.
The two sequels, which appeal to vastly different segments of the moviegoing audience, will likely be overshadowed by the second weekend grosses of “F9,” which is expected to earn roughly $28 million over the July 4th holiday. “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” a family-friendly affair, is projected to gross $15 million in its inaugural weekend.
The very R-rated “The Forever Purge” should top out at $10 million. Starring Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta and directed by Everardo Gout, “Forever Purge” is set along the U.S.-Mexican border and incorporates a topical immigration-themed storyline. Universal also released “F9” and owns DreamWorks Animation, meaning it will be behind all three of the top-grossing films this weekend.

Universal’s “The Forever Purge,” the fifth and final movie in “The Purge” horror franchise, and the animated family sequel “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” each made $1.3 million at Thursday preview screenings ahead of the 4th of July weekend.
Both films figure to perform strongly over the long weekend in theaters, and with “F9” still going strongly, there’s a chance Universal can take the top 3 spots at the box office. “F9” earned $4.9 million on Thursday and is expected to finish its second weekend in theaters at No. 1.
“The Forever Purge” made $1.33 million from 2,550 theaters with showings that began at 7 p.m., and it opens on 3,051 screens this weekend. Many movies are a reflection of their time: Dr. Strangelove was a biting 1960s anti-nuclear war satire. Taxi Driver was a 1970s commentary on urban loneliness. Now as America grapples with rising, politically inspired unrest, it’s more than a bit sad that the movie for Our time may well be The Forever Purge.
This half a billion-dollar franchise started out in 2013 as a humble $3M action/thriller starring Ethan Hawke. Expectations were modest at best… Instead, the film’s main theme – allowing society to “let off steam” with one night where all crime is allowed - touched a nerve, grossing almost $90M and installments (and profits) soon followed.
This latest sequel, directed by Everardo Gout and written by series creator, James DeMonaco, cannily picks up on today’s social and political vibes - a humble Mexican couple, Juan and Adela,...

There aren’t many modern horror movies that have had the impact of “The Purge,” which revolve around an idea so disturbing and insidious it feels like it’s been around forever. (Or at least since the 1967 “Star Trek” episode “The Return of the Archons.”)
“The Purge” takes place in a near future where an extreme conservative fringe party has taken over the American government, instituting a new national holiday where all crime is legal for 12 hours. Although the rationale for “Purge Night” is ostensibly to vent society’s hostilities to make the rest of the year more peaceful, in actuality it’s a grotesque attempt to convince Americans to partake of self-inflicted genocide, curtailing the population and empowering white supremacists.
The best films in “The Purge” franchise find a healthy balance of terrifying action and refreshingly direct moral parable. The worst are nonetheless intriguing explorations of social collapse amidst literal class warfare.

There’s one key fact about the fifth and (apparently) final installment in James DeMonaco’s Purge series that demands mentioning: it was scheduled to debut July 2020. Whereas a Covid-19 delay doesn’t mean much for F9 or Black Widow, it’s crucial to understanding just how prescient these political horror films are. Why? Because much of what occurs in The Forever Purge is an exact parallel to January 6th, 2021. DeMonaco’s mythology leads his fictional America to the brink of insurrection—not to comment on what happened five months ago, but because he noticed the real world was pushing itself there months (and probably years) before it happened. It’s a mirror that makes perfect sense considering the New Founding Father’s violent celebration has always been the GOP’s fantasy made real.
What’s most frightening about the whole ordeal is that our January 6 is actually the end...

As someone who has been a fan of The Purge series for the most part, I was rather interested to see where screenwriter James DeMonaco and director Everardo Gout were going to take this concept for The Forever Purge, and for the most part, they’ve succeeded in creating a horrific vision that taps into the division that is currently rippling through the sociopolitical landscape of the United States. There are definitely aspects of The Forever Purge that feel a bit heavy-handed at times, and it doesn’t quite have the same pulse-racing action set pieces we’ve seen in other entries, but, as a whole, The Forever Purge does an admirable job of continuing the franchise’s legacy of holding up a mirror to the issues that are currently plaguing society in America.

There aren’t many moments of levity in Everardo Gout’s “The Forever Purge,” but you’ll probably have a hearty chuckle when — at the end of this dystopian thriller about America devouring itself over political, economic and racial divides — the credits claim that “Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.”
Yeah, right.
The “Purge” franchise imagines a very near future in which rage is openly stoked by American politicians, the populace is heavily armed, and just enough people think that violence is the solution to their problems that it threatens the safety of the entire populace. The idea, as laid out by political party The New Founding Fathers, is to accept America’s violent nature and give citizens carte blanche to let off steam one night a year.
The reality of “Purge Night,” as revealed over the course of the franchise, is that it’s...

Never put too much faith in claims that a moneymaking franchise is over. But the underwhelming Purge series will end on a high note if it goes out with Everardo Gout’s The Forever Purge, a satisfying action pic that finally realizes the potential of its pulp-meets-sociopolitics conceit. Set on the Texas side of the border with Mexico, it lets creator James DeMonaco’s imagined scenario of government-sanctioned violence play out where, in real life, arbitrary borders become physical walls and a fetish for gun rights amplifies the dangers of being an unwelcome visitor.

Usually, the weekend before the release of a Marvel film would be devoid of any box office newcomers. But in this post-covid Fourth of July weekend, Universal is taking the polar opposite strategy by releasing not one but two films — DreamWorks’ “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and Blumhouse’s “The Forever Purge” — alongside the second weekend of “F9.”
It’s just the latest distribution experiment in a year full of them, and it could lead to some rare sights on this weekend’s charts. Universal notes that if its three current releases take the top three spots on the July 4 charts — and that is very likely considering both new releases are projected for openings of over $10 million — it would become the first studio since 2005 to do a podium sweep of the box office. The last to do so was Sony Pictures with “Hitch,” “Boogeyman,” and “Are We There Yet?” during a light February release period.

Multi-hyphenate James DeMonaco has been the driving force behind The Purge franchise now for nearly eight years and five films under his belt. Not only has he written all of the movies in the series, but he also directed the first three films and collaborated directly with the directors at the helm of the last two Purge entries - The First Purge and now, The Forever Purge, which is set to hit theaters this Friday, July 2nd, courtesy of Universal Pictures.
During the recent press day for The Forever Purge, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with DeMonaco in depth about all sorts of Purge-related business, including the prescient nature of all of the films in comparison to recent political events in the United States, his approach to the story of The Forever Purge, collaborating with director Everardo Gout on this latest Purge film, and how if all...

After raising the bar on what a movie can open to during the pandemic with F9‘s $70M weekend, Universal is adding a wide-release one-two punch to the weekend with the debut of two titles geared at two different demos: DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby: Family Business, which is set to do $15M+, and Blumhouse’s The Forever Purge, which is looking at $10M+ over three days.
Together with the second weekend of the studio’s F9, which is speeding toward another $28M (-60%), all three movies will not only own the top three spots at the B.O. for Uni, but bring the studio a weekend of $53M+. 2018 was a watershed moment for diversity in Hollywood. High-profile studio films directed by filmmakers of color made history: Ava DuVernay became the first black woman to direct a film that grossed over $100 million with “A Wrinkle in Time”; “Crazy Rich Asians” was a huge hit, grossing over $238 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy in a decade; and “Black Panther,” the most expensive Marvel movie led by a black superhero, grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, shattering the belief that black films don’t sell overseas.
The problem lies in the follow-through, an inconsistency problem that has plagued Hollywood for decades. In 2019, according to IndieWire’s own research, out of the top 100 movies of 2019, the number directed by filmmakers of color fell from 26 percent in 2018 to 18 percent in 2019. White men still account for over 80 percent of film directors at the studio level (and make up a third of the U.S.

Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for the next instalment of the Blumhouse franchise ‘The Forever Purge’.
Vaulting from the record-shattering success of 2018’s The First Purge, Blumhouse’s infamous terror franchise hurtles into innovative new territory as an underground movement, no longer satisfied with one annual night of anarchy and murder, decide to “purify” the country once and for all and launch a class and race massacre along America’s southern border.
Mexican refugees Adela and her husband Juan have fled the drug cartels in their country and now live in Texas. Working as a ranch hand for the wealthy Tucker family, Juan impresses the Tucker patriarch, Caleb. Unfortunately, that only fuels the jealous anger of Caleb’s son, Dylan.
On the morning after The Purge, a masked gang of killers attacks the Tucker family—including Dylan’s pregnant wife, Cassie, and his sister, Harper, forcing both families...

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for “The Forever Purge,” the fifth and final installment in the blockbuster horror franchise. The dystopian horror saga began in 2013 with “The Purge,” which starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as a wealthy family who find themselves hunted during the annual Purge, the one night in which all crime, including murder, is temporarily legal. The franchise was created by James DeMonaco, who wrote the screenplays for all five films and directed the first three.
A direct sequel to 2016’s “The Purge: Election Year,” “The Forever Purge” follows a Mexican couple on the run from a drug cartel who become stranded on a Texas ranch. Though the presidential elections eliminated the Purge, the couple find themselves hunted by a group of outsiders who plan to continue the tradition despite it being outlawed. The premise shifts the saga away from its usual urban setting, while...

For one night a year, all crime is legal, including murder. For the rest of the year, America is peaceful and crime free. That was James DeMonaco’s original premise for The Purge, and the franchise is now onto its fifth – and ostensibly final – installment, The Forever Purge. This one asks: what if some folks felt like one night just wasn’t enough?
Based on a script by DeMonaco and once again under the Blumhouse roof, The Forever Purge is directed by Everardo Gout best known for Days of Grace and his work on National Geographic sci-fi Mars.
Den of Geek got a sneaky early look at the explosive trailer for the movie and chatted to Gout, who broke down the action for us.

Everardo Gout directs the movie opening from Universal on July 2
What if the annual Purge didn’t stop at daybreak and instead continued its streak of murderous, lawless mayhem forever? That’s the premise of “The Forever Purge,” in which a sect of marauders conspire to make sure this year’s Purge has no end.
“The Forever Purge” is the fifth and potentially final film in the horror franchise, which imagines an America in which crime has largely been eradicated by making all crime, including murder, legal for one day only.
Over the years, the franchise has evolved from a simple home invasion movie to a social commentary and satire about elections and American politics.
This latest entry aims to continue that streak. Everardo Gout, who has been a director on series including “Mars,” “The Terror” and “Snowpiercer,” is taking over directing duties on “The Forever Purge,” and the franchise’s original writer,...

In just over a decade Blumhouse Productions has gone from a very smart agile indie to possibly the most significant horror production company out there. It’s slate is huge, it most quickly and cheaply, trusts in its creators and favours originality and genuine scares. Snowpiercer Episode 8
The only thing keeping Snowpiercer in any sort of working order, aside from hard work and Third Class laborers, is belief. The belief that Mr. Wilford is up in the front of the train, guiding the eternal engine, making sure everyone has enough food, and space, and frolic to keep them all from going mad. Mr. Wilford, the benevolent genius behind the life-saving train, and the man single-handedly keeping the human race from extinction. For people like Ruth (Alison Wright), Wilford is next to God in their eyes. For people like the Folgers, Wilford is the only person on the train with more money than them, and clout enough to get them thrown out of the train or worse should he wish it. “Purge 5,” the latest chapter in Universal Pictures’ dystopian horror franchise, has been indefinitely delayed. The film, titled “The Forever Purge,” was set to release in theaters July 10 and has been pulled from the studio’s calendar.
The move underscores the fact that Hollywood studios don’t expect cinemas will be able to operate in full capacity in the next two months. Theaters in some states that have begun the reopening process, such as Texas and Georgia, have started to slowly resume business. In Los Angeles and New York City, however, entertainment venues like movie theaters are in the later phases of reopening plans and could stay closed longer than anticipated.
For now, the only films still scheduled to open this summer are Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” (July 17), Disney’s live-action remake of “Mulan” (July 24) and “Wonder Woman 1984” (Aug. 14). But those dates could continue to shift if movie theaters in heavily impacted areas like New York,...
