Film Review: ‘Gilbert’

Film Review: ‘Gilbert’
The voice! That high-pitched, kvetchy, caterwauling rasp — the sound of an angry Jewish uncle from 1940 shouting in your face. The sour squint of disapproval. The teeth so bulgy they look like dentures that want to bite you. And the jokes! Vulgar (and cheap) enough that they’d seem right at home on a second-tier Catskills nightclub stage. In the 1980s, Gilbert Gottfried became one of the first walking-pieces-of-kitsch comedy stars: a man who seemed to be playing a character so obnoxious that the obnoxiousness became the point. He was the one-joke version of a post-Andy Kaufman jester. He killed, as they say, by letting the audience in on the garish bellowing absurdity of his act.

He found his way into the spotlight (on “Letterman” and “Arsenio” and “Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee,” in chintzy Hollywood sequels like “Beverly Hills Cop II” and “Problem Child 2”). And he solidified his ironic mainstream status with a highly

‘Lady Bird’ Takes Flight as Best Specialty Opener of 2017

‘Lady Bird’ Takes Flight as Best Specialty Opener of 2017
Lady Bird” (A24), Greta Gerwig’s first solo directing effort, rode a wave of strong reviews and publicity to score the best limited opener of the year. After a disappointing prime specialty season when it has become easy to forget what a strong limited platform opening can be, her valentine to her home town of Sacramento starring Saorise Ronan debuted even higher than expectations.

This success stood in sharp contrast to the weak opening for Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying” (Lionsgate). Despite a strong push for the Amazon presentation, which opened the New York Film Festival, the military veteran drama starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Laurence Fishburne couldn’t pull in specialty audiences.

'Gilbert': Film Review

'Gilbert': Film Review
In his two very fine previous documentaries, Neil Berkeley has focused on cult artists (painter Wayne White, TV creator Dan Harmon) who typically work behind the scenes. With Gilbert, a portrait of polarizing comedian Gilbert Gottfried, he looks at the surprisingly tender real human behind the grating personality America has known for over three decades. A laugh-packed and unexpectedly moving picture, it is now moving from a warmly received fest run to art houses; it should do even better once it hits video.

The doc's big revelation comes early, as the audience realizes just how quiet and loving this professionally...

New Documentary “Gilbert” is Yes, About Gilbert Gottfried

When you hear his voice or see him coming the first thing a lot of people would think is “Oh man, here comes Gilbert Gottfried”. It could denote excitement or it could mean that a person wants to get out of there before the guy can open his mouth, because in all honesty when Gilbert speaks he’s loud, obnoxious, and extremely coarse in what he says. But the documentary that’s set to come out about him soon is going to show another side of him that a lot of people might not believe is possible. Think back to Problem Child

Trailer for Documentary 'Gilbert' Profiling Comedian Gilbert Gottfried

"He doesn't really filter himself, and I think that's why people are drawn to him." Submarine has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Gilbert, telling the story of the legendary "comedian's comedian" Gilbert Gottfried. Most will recognize Gottfried's voice first and foremost, along with his famous roles in big films like Aladdin and Beverly Hills Cop II, but he's so much more than just a funny voice. This new documentary takes a peek "behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life." Surprisingly it also "strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it." There's some great footage in this trailer, and tons of other comedians talking about him, which is wonderful to see. I'm looking forward to watching this doc at some point soon. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Neil Berkeley's documentary Gilbert,

The clip showcases Gottfried's well-known, outrageous comedy, and fittingly opens with a shot of two attendees walking out of one of his sets. "Usually I lose the crowd quicker than that," he cracks. "I must be slipping."

Amidst an array of praise from fellow comedians such as Whoopi Goldberg, Jay Leno and Bill Burr, the trailer touches on Gottfried's peculiar habits – from taking the bus when

'The Weird Al Show': The Complete Oral History
Al Yankovic can be described in a lot of ways besides "Weird." Most people know that he's a chart-topping singer-songwriter, a director-producer, a top-notch parodist, an author and a die-hard polka enthusiast. Even those who have followed his career closely, however, may have forgotten he was, for a brief moment, the host of a short-lived children's television show.

The Weird Al Show debuted on CBS on September 13, 1997 as part of their Saturday morning lineup. Each episode began with the all important "today's lesson" before viewers were invited into Yankovic's underground

Aladdin Gets Homeland Star as Jafar's Henchman Hakim

  • MovieWeb
Aladdin Gets Homeland Star as Jafar's Henchman Hakim
Just a few weeks after we reported that The Mummy remake star Marwan Kenzari is in talks to play the villainous Jafar in Disney's Aladdin reboot, it seems the studio has also found the villain's right-hand man. Turkish actor Numan Acar is in talks to portray Hakim, who serves as the "head of the guards" for Jafar in this live-action remake. There was a guard character named Hakim, voiced by Frank Welker, in the original Aladdin movie, but it seems he will be a much more substantial character in this live-action movie.

Deadline broke the news of this casting, but their report did not include Marwan Kenzari as part of the cast, so perhaps his deal has not been finalized at this time. Numan Acar will be joined by Will Smith, who voices The Genie, Mena Massoud as the title character Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Nasim Pedrad as Mara,
