Memorable for playing the role of "General Gogol" in the James Bond movies from The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), right up to The Living Daylights (1987). He previously appeared in From Russia with Love (1963) as SPECTRE henchman "Morzeny".

Chosen for the role of General Gogol in the James Bond movies of the 1970s and 80s because he was a look-alike of the former head of Soviet secret police, Lavrentiy Pavlovitch Beria. He had earlier appeared as a different character in From Russia with Love.
