After narrowly averting a surf-tastrophie in December and recently checking into rehab, things are finally looking up for mighty Spartan Gerard Butler as he replaces The Hulk in a movie… kinda.
Variety is reporting that Butler will step in for Eric Bana as he boards diamond-heist thriller "Brilliant," which is being helmed by Robert Luketic after the two of them had a beautiful time on the set of "The Ugly Truth."
Freshman screenwriter Gillian Gorfil's story chronicles "a small-time criminal who partners with a female thief to pull off a daring diamond heist." Wait, are they thinking Katherine Heigl again?
Luketic recently directed a pair of Heigl films, "Ugly Truth" and the misbegotten "Killers," so it stands to reason the actress would at least be in-the-running. Cameron Diaz was originally set to co-star but it appears she jumped ship, possibly in fear that Scotsman Butler's kilts might upstage whatever...

There once was a time when Eric Bana was negotiating to take the lead in heist thriller Brilliant for director Robert Luketic. That time was last October, but now things have changed and Gerard Butler will star instead.
Butler's taking the role of a small-time criminal who teams up with a female thief and some other gangsters to pull off an audacious diamond heist. We'd guess that sparks will fly between the two even as they sneak around buildings then either go on the run from the cops or there will a double cross and they'll need to ward off their former partners. That sort of thing always happens in these films.
The script is by Gillian Gorfil, who produced Blood Diamond. It's said she sleeps on a bed of diamonds at night, like a screenwriting Bond villain. All right, so no one actually says that. But they should.

You’d think the words “Gerard Butler” and “diamond heist flick” would spell out something fantastic, but in the case of Robert Luketic‘s Brilliant, they seem to signal something less than shiny. Butler has just replaced a previously in-negotiations Eric Bana to star in the film (and that’s already a black mark against it in my book, I’d much rather watch Bana on screen than Butler), which will be directed by his The Ugly Truth helmer. Yeah, that’s not good. Variety reports that Brilliant centers on “a small-time criminal who partners with a female thief to pull off a daring diamond heist.” While that’s certainly a fun premise, the closest that Luketic has come to a heist flick is 2008′s missed opportunity 21. And the film’s screenwriter will be of little help when it comes to crime expertise, as the film is writer Gillian Gorfil‘s first project. It...

The bearer of mildly disappointing news this afternoon would have to be ShowBlitz, who inform us that Gerard Butler will be substituting for Eric Bana on the Robert Luketic-helmed heist picture Brilliant. While the latter of those two leads looked ready to star back in late September, this whole enterprise appeared just a little out-of-the-ordinary when news fell silent for roughly five months. And now this mystery has been solved.
Written by Gillian Gorfil, Brilliant centers on “a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist.” Taking past depictions of this basic character into account, I’d argue that such a role might be a better fit for the more “roguish” side of Butler‘s style; that is to say, it certainly stands in opposition to the internal and contemplative work Bana‘s been doing for more than decade. Add in the fact that he and Luketic...

Fresh out of rehab, and looking dapper hitting the Oscar parties over the weekend, Gerard Butler is wisely putting whatever troubles he had to overcome behind him, putting his head down, and getting back to work.
The actor has landed a new gig, replacing Eric Bana in the diamond heist pic appropriately titled "Brilliant." First announced last fall, the film from "21," "Legally Blonde" and "Killers" director Robert Luketic, and penned by Gillian Gorfil (producer of “Blood Diamond”) and Elizabeth Shorten, the story centers on a small-time criminal who teams with a female thief to pull off the biggest diamond heist of all time. And as much as we love a good heist flick, there are a few red flags.
First is director Luketic, who has helmed some truly lukewarm material (at best), while the male/female pairing makes us hope this isn't "The Bounty Hunter" in the guise of a crime caper.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is needs some big-time help for one of his next movies and that help is coming from... Susan Sarandon?
Currently shooting G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation, THR reports that one of Johnson's next projects is the action thriller Snitch, which sees the former wrestler-turned-action star play a suburban father who goes undercover to help capture a drug dealer when his teenage son is given a long prison sentence. Sarandon will play an ambitious U.S. attorney who thinks a drug bust will help her political ambitions.
Written and directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Felon), Snitch was originally written by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road), until Waugh became attached and rewrote the script, and is based on a Frontline documentary. No word on when Snitch will start shooting — oddly, no one is talking.

It is so unfortunate that Eric Bana has never broken out into the A-List Action/Drama/Comedy lead that he should have. He deserves better than “the dad in Hanna” and “the guy who was in the Hulk movie no one liked.” I’m of the opinion there’s always hope – that no man is too old to be a sensation – and maybe Lakeshore Entertainment’s “Brilliant” is that hope.According to Variety, Bana has nabbed the lead in “Brilliant,” a thriller that centers on a diamond heist. Bana plays a small-time thief who ends up with a bunch of posh and accomplished jewel thieves on said heist. Presumably, things go wrong and he is left holding the bag. Or they rip him off. Let's start off this casting break with a quick one: Robert Luketic (The Ugly Truth) is putting together a diamond heist movie called Brilliant, written by Blood Diamond producer Gillian Gorfil. He's now got Eric Bana set to star. The plot follows "a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist," with Bana presumably playing the small-timer. I can't say that Luketic is the most inspiring choice -- I don't expect a serious heist movie here -- but Bana could be a good choice for the lead. It's no surprise that Lionsgate is still in the Tyler Perry business. He might as well just print money for the studio. What ever happened to Eric Bana? It was only a few years ago that the Australian actor made a name for himself as one of the stronger male leads in Hollywood, but since making four films in 2009 he has only done one other project: Joe Wright's Hanna. Fortunately it looks like the drought may be over soon. In addition to the Stefan Ruzowitzky thriller Blackbird, which is due out in 2012, Bana is also attached to the Sheldon Turner revenge tale By Virtue Fall, and has now looks to add a heist film to his list of upcoming projects. Variety reports that Bana is now in talks to star in Brilliant, the new movie from director Robert Luketic. Based on a script by Gillian Gorfil, the project is about a young criminal who teams up with a elite gang of thieves to pull off the biggest diamond heist of all time.

We haven’t seen nearly as much Eric Bana over the past few years as I would prefer. His only role in 2011 was a supporting role in Hanna, and that was his first acting job since 2009′s The Time Traveler’s Wife. Perhaps he was just taking a well-deserved break, but people like myself want more of the adroit Aussie.
Luckily enough, Variety is reporting that Bana will be going down a path of crime for a starring role in Brilliant. Legally Blonde and 21 helmer Robert Luketic will direct Gillian Gorfil‘s screenwriting debut that follows “a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist.” They don’t say who he’ll be playing — the small-time criminal is a good guess, however.
The main problem here, far as I can tell, is Luketic‘s involvement. To put it more simply: When people argue that Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!

Fresh from training teenage assassins in Hanna, Eric Bana is on the move from spycraft to crime for Brilliant, a heist thriller in development at Lakeshore Entertainment. The film involves a small-time crook who gets mixed up with big-time gangsters for a diamond robbery that would normally be way out of his league. We'd surmise that Bana's is the amateur role (which might, if it's appropriate, give him the opportunity to break out the comedy chops that we've not seen for a while) but it's not quite clear from Variety's story if that's the case. Unconfirmed reports have Cameron Diaz cast opposite him in an unspecified role. Let's have her as the leader of the professionals eh? None of yer sappy love interest nonsense...The Brilliant screenplay is by Gillian Gorfil, who was a producer on Blood Diamond: if diamonds aren't quite her best friend, they're at least solid acquaintances.

Briefly: Robert Luketic is one of those directors whose name a lot of people might not be able to place, though they very likely have an opinion about his films. He had a hit with Legally Blonde in 2001, but since then has made a quartet of painful stinkers: Monster in Law, 21, The Ugly Truth and Killers. Now he's turning towards a heist film called Brilliant. The question is: will this be a heist film in the Killers and 21 mold, or something a little more classic? The script is by Gillian Gorfil and Elizabeth Shorten, and follows "a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist." We don't have any cast at this point (Matthew McConaughey, Scarlet Johansson and Michael Caine were all once attached or rumored for the film) but given that the director's movies tend to make a few bucks regardless of critical reception, he might nab a couple high-profile names.

The film track record for Robert Luketic so far isn't too overly impressive. Sure, he made a really cute film out of the Reese Witherspoon-starring flick "Legally Blonde," but the rest of his films weren't winners, especially "The Ugly Truth" and "Killers." Finally he's stepping away from the romantic comedies again to direct "Brilliant" for Lakeshore Entertainment. The heist picture is penned by Elizabeth Shorten and Gillian Gorfil. Tom Rosenberg, Sidney Kimmel, Gary Lucchesi and Gorfil will be producing the film. "Brilliant" focuses on a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist. This could be a really great move for Luketic, especially since "the Ugly Truth" and "Killers" were his last two films. The features were both critically bashed, so this could definitely put a spring in his step if all goes well with this production.Source: Variety...

After bringing the world the likes of Killers, The Ugly Truth and Monster-In-Law, it looks like director Robert Luketic is finally itching to break out of the dodgy romantic comedy rut he’s found himself in and is switching genres to tackle heist thriller Brilliant. Written by Gillian Gorfil and Elizabeth Shorten, the plot follows a small-time criminal who is somehow recruited to join an experienced team of jewel thieves on a diamond heist. That’s about it for the info on the movie – there’s no start date or distributor set up yet and no casting to announce, because the producers at Lakeshore Entertainment were looking to lock down a director and have them start to look for actors. We’re just crossing our fingers that Katherine Heigl – who (dis)graced the screen for Luketic's last two projects – stays away from this one.Besides, Luketic did a decent job...

Robert Luketic (Killers) has signed on to direct Brilliant, which tells the story of "a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist." Variety reports that the script is by newbie screenwriters Elizabeth Shorten and Gillian Gorfil (produer on Blood Diamond), so it's got that going for it; new female voices are always welcome in the trade. But based on past performance, the chances are slim to none that Luketic directs Brilliant brilliantly. Here's hoping Luketic finds grace with Brilliant, because there's nothing sweeter than a solid heist flick. Gorfil will produce alongside Sidney Kimmel (Adventureland), Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg (Gamer). Casting is underway, but no start date has been set for the Lakeshore Entertainment film.

The man who brought us such gems as Legally Blonde and Killers is now getting into the diamond heist business. Or rather, at least director Robert Luketic is into telling the story about stealing diamonds as Variety reports that the filmmaker is set to direct Brilliant, a story chronicling what could be the biggest diamond heist of all time. The focus is actually a small-time criminal who becomes the protege of some of the world's most accomplished thieves as they prepare for the epic crime. The project does not even have a distributor just yet, but casting is about to begin shortly. Hopefully Katherine Heigl stays away this time. I'm willing to bet this will have flares of 21, one of Luketic's more tolerable films, but the plot still seems mostly generic. The script comes from Gillian Gorfil and Elizabeth Shorten who don't seem to have any previous writing credits ...

Robert Luketic's film career has been a decidedly downward trajectory. He made a big splash helming the better-than-it-deserved-to-be Reese Witherspoon comedy "Legally Blonde" and ever since has made one bad picture after another, culminating in a double whammy of awful Katherine Heigl romcoms, "The Ugly Truth" and last year's abysmal "Killers." But it looks like Luketic is looking to change things up for his next picture. Variety reports that Luketic will take on the heist pic "Brilliant" for his next film. Written by Gillian Gorfil (producer of "Blood Diamond") and Elizabeth Shorten, the story "revolves around a small-time criminal who…...

I don't know if it's a delayed reaction to Inception or what, but it seems that heist movies are making their way back in a big way. First it was announced that director Jaume Collet-Serra is going to remake Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge, and then it was reported that both Andrew Garfield and Ewan McGregor have signed on to separate bank robbing flicks. But we're not done yet, because now director Robert Luketic is getting into the game. Variety reports that the Killers helmer has signed on to make Brilliant, based on a script by Gillian Gorfil and Elizabeth Shorten. In the story a young thief finds himself paired up with some of the greatest bandits in the world who are in the midst of "planning the biggest diamond heist of all time." Backed by Lakeshore Entertainment, casting has begun, but the project doesn't have a start date...
