Southland, “Chaos”

Written by Zack Whedon

Directed by Christopher Chulack

Aired April 10th, 2013 on TNT

Forget Hannibal. Forget American Horror Story. Forget “The Rains of Castamere.” You want harrowing? You want soul-crushing blackness with a side of trauma? You want pure, unforgiving narrative nihilism? Try on the penultimate episode of sadly-departed cop drama Southland. Whereas the typical episode hones in on a few plotlines between seven or eight characters, “Chaos” revolves mostly around a single, nightmare-inducing act: the kidnapping of two of our principal characters by a pair of deranged meth-heads. On paper, it sounds like your average “Very Special Episode” of… really, any cop show ever. The “team member(s) get nabbed and have to be rescued by the rest of the team” setup is well-worn territory. “Chaos”, however, is a different beast entirely. Based loosely on a real incident, “Chaos” earns its title honestly, unfolding seemingly without rhyme or reason, »

Jamie Hector Joins Nikki Amuka-Bird In Cinemax Pilot 'Quarry'

5 August 2013 6:28 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

I missed this news when it was first announced almost a month ago, but it's better late than never.  The Wire alum Jamie Hector has joined the cast of the upcoming Cinemax drama pilot Quarry.  Hector will play Arthur, the husband of Nikki Amuka-Bird's character, Ruth. It was back in June when we first broke the news that Amuka-Bird had been cast in the pilot based on the popular Max Allan Collins novels. Set in the 1970's, Quarry centers on Marine sniper Quarry (Logan Marshall-Green) who, upon his return home from Vietnam in 1973, finds himself shunned by those he loves and demonized by the public. Amuka-Bird will play Ruth, the wife of Quarry’s friend, fellow former Marine, Artie. I was very curious to know with whom Amuka-Bird would be paired.  The selection of Hector is an excellent one, and only increases my interest in the show, as I'm »

Quarry Collects Actress Nikki Amuka-Bird

21 June 2013 9:54 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

I know British actress Nikki Amuka-Bird best as the long suffering Det. Sgt. Erin Gray on BBC One’s addictive series Luther. Fans will get to see another side of her now that she’s been cast in the new Cinemax drama pilot Quarry.

Logan Marshall-Green stars in the pilot as a 1973 era Vietnam vet, freshly home for the war and quite disillusioned. So, what does he do? He joins a shadow organization to become a hitman.

Amuka-Bird will play Ruth, explained the latest Deadline casting update. Ruth is the wife of Artie, friend to Marshall-Green’s Quarry. Artie is a former Marine, by the by.

It’s all coming together. Quarry is based on the series of novels by Max Allan Collins, who also brought us the amazing Road To Perdition graphic novel. As previously reported, Stellan Skarsgård will play the key role of The Broker. Noah Taylor has »

Cinemax’s Quarry Adds Stellan Skarsgård To Sniper Pilot

14 June 2013 1:44 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Cinemax is busy beefing up its sniper pilot, Quarry. We’ve been bringing you all the latest casting news involved in this interesting 1970s set thriller. Today we can add a Thor actor to the mix. Stellan Skarsgård has signed the dotted line to co-star in the pilot.

Quarry could be a success. The network has already seen positive results with their original series Banshee and Strike Back. Quarry is based on the Max Allan Collins series of novels and follows a Marine sniper, who we previously revealed would be acted by Prometheus actor, Logan Marshall-Green. When our Marine returns home from Vietnam in 1973, he finds an America that would demonize him for doing nothing more than sacrificing just about everything to protect their freedoms.

As a result, Marshall-Green’s character, whose name is Quarry, becomes a contract killer. He is good a killing after all.

Cinemax Recruits Prometheus Actor To Soldier On In Quarry Pilot

23 May 2013 9:09 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Cinemax just recruited a Marine sniper. Okay, so Prometheus actor Logan Marshall-Green isn’t really a soldier, but he’ll play one on TV. The network chose him to star in their new drama pilot titled Quarry.

The pilot is based upon a Max Allan Collins’ book, which follows a Marine sniper who returns home from Vietnam in 1973 to become disillusioned by the America he finds. It isn’t the one he left behind and it isn’t kind to him. “Combat-hardened and disillusioned, he’s recruited into a network of contract killers and corruption spanning the length of the Mississippi River,” reported THR. I told you it was a drama, and what a drama, but I see exciting thriller elements here as well.

If you are thinking that the title is weird, don’t. A quarry holds rocks and any member of the military can tell you there are »

Rectify Ep 1.04 ‘Plato’s Cave’ explores Plato’s allegories through Daniel in fascinating ways

Rectify Season 1, Episode 4 ‘Plato’s Cave’

Directed by Jim McKay

Written by Graham Gordy & Michael D. Fuller

Airs Monday nights at 9pm Et on Sundance

I’ve always been fascinated by the ideas behind Plato’s Allegory of the Cave – so when I saw the title of tonight’s episode, I was obviously drooling with excitement. And, boy, did ‘Plato’s Cave’ not disappoint: it certainly fits the quiet, character-based model of previous episodes, but focuses intently on this exploration of faith versus reason, giving life to the mental and spiritual struggle Daniel Holden’s currently going through.

I don’t want to spend 10,000 words getting into Plato’s allegory (there’s a really well-organized Wikipedia article here for detailed info), but the foundation of it is fairly simple. In it, Plato presents a simple situation: a group of people are chained to stand facing a wall for their entire lives, »

Rectify Ep 1.03 ‘Modern Times’ quietly observes the Holden siblings trying to adjust

Rectify Season 1, Episode 3 ‘Modern Times’

Directed by Nicole Kassel

Written by Evan Dunsky, Graham Gordy & Michael D. Fuller

Airs Monday nights at 9pm Et on Sundance

Daniel Holden’s exoneration from prison ripped a deep, tender scar off the town of Paulie – and unsurprisingly, many of the people living in it, from mothers, to politicians, and even those who weren’t born when the murder and subsequent trial of Daniel rocked the city. In an hour almost completely devoid of plot, ‘Modern Times’ takes a long, hard look at the Holden siblings (and those around them) trying to come to terms with this new reality, one where a confessed killer seemingly escapes the grips of justice.

For the first fifteen minutes of ‘Modern Times’, Daniel doesn’t even leave his bedroom. He’s spent his entire adult life in prison; having a choice of whether to open the door or »
