Oscars: Biopics, Diversity Dearth Shape Midyear Race

2 July 2015 1:19 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As 2015 hits the halfway mark, it’s encouraging that so many upcoming films look promising — because so far, the Oscar possibilities are meager, to say the least.

Once again, fact-based dramas will dominate awards buzz. There are at least 14 with scheduled dates, and another three possibilities for this year. Six of these earn the highest possible praise: People from rival studios like them.

That roster includes “Black Mass,” starring Johnny Depp as Boston mob kingpin Whitey Bulger; “Concussion,” about the NFL’s efforts to deny the repercussions of players’ repeated concussions; “Spotlight,” with Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams as the Boston Globe reporters who uncovered child abuse in the Catholic Church; “Trumbo,” about Dalton Trumbo and the House Un-American Activities Committee; “Truth,” the Dan Rather-George W. Bush scandal pic; and “The Walk,” about high-wire artist Philippe Petit, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Oliver Stone's 'Snowden' Teaser Leaks No Footage of A-List Cast

1 July 2015 3:55 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

For a movie about a guy (in)famous for leaking classified information, "Snowden" is playing its own cards close to the vest. For now. Oliver Stone, who lives for this kind of story, directed the political bio thriller with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as former CIA employee Edward Snowden. The movie comes out on Christmas, which means it's a capital "B" Big Deal. Also a big deal: the rest of the A-list cast, which includes Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson and even -- a bit randomly -- Nicolas Cage.

The first teaser trailer doesn't focus on the cast. It doesn't show them at all. It only lists their names at the end, after a series of facts are shown about the real Edward Snowden (who is also not shown at all). Here's what we see, amid close-up shots of an American flag, as pensive »

Snowden: first trailer for new Oliver Stone film

30 June 2015 11:26 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

There's an American flag, but no sign of Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the first trailer for Oliver Stone's Edward Snowden film...

The latest movie from director Oliver Stone is the story of Nsa whistleblower, Edward Snowden. Due in Us cinemas in December, the movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden, with the supporting cast including Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Nicolas Cage (yes!) and Rhys Ifans.

The film - which goes by the name of Snowden - is set to tell the story of how Snowden got hold of thousands of classified documents and then leaked them to the press, and the simple synopsis for the movie reads as follows:

Snowden stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and is written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Stone. The script is based on the books The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding and »

The Teaser Trailer For Oliver Stone’s Snowden Arrives

30 June 2015 3:34 PM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Recounting the story of Nsa contractor Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and how he obtained and shared with the world thousands of classified documents that informed the public of privacy breaches acted out by their own government, Oliver Stone’s Snowden comes our way later this year, and the first trailer has arrived. A teaser in every sense of the word, this gives nothing away about the story (or contain any footage for that matter), but you get the sense Stone is going down the controversial route here (the upside American flag is an official signal that the country is in danger). The director's output has been on decline as of late, but part of me is hoping Snowden sees a return to form for him. Released: 25th December (U.S.)/ ? (Irl/U.K.) »

The script is based on the books The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the world's Most Wanted man in teaser for Oliver Stone's Snowden

30 June 2015 11:31 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Joseph Gordon-Levitt becomes the world's Most Wanted man in a chilling teaser for Snowden.

A brand new promo for Oliver Stone's dramatisation of Nsa leaker Edward Snowden's life carries the tagline: "One nation under surveillance, for liberty and justice for all."

Snowden tells the story of a man who rose from Us Army recruit to a National Security Agency contractor within the span of just nine years.

The defence contractor made himself an enemy of the Us government when he leaked a mass of classified documents to reporters Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras in 2013.

Zachary Quinto and Melissa Leo portray the journalists at the centre of this controversy in Snowden, while Shailene Woodley plays the girlfriend who Edward left behind when he fled the Us.

The controversial subject matter in Snowden is nothing new for Stone, who has famously directed acclaimed movies on the Kennedy assassination and the Watergate scandal. »
