Original civilian test pilot of Bell Aircraft Company's X-1 experimental aircraft, which would eventually break the sound barrier. When he demanded $150,000 for his services, the US Air Force took over the project and chose Chuck Yeager as its test pilot.

An American citizen, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force early in 1941.
