Jose Alvarez’s ‘The Gaze of the Sea’ Vies for the Top Docu Prize at Morelia
Executive produced by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“The Revenant”), Jose Alvarez’s poignant docu “The Gaze of the Sea” (“Los Ojos del Mar”) turns on a prostitute who makes it her mission to help the families of shipwrecked fishermen lost at sea.

“Gaze” is produced by Julio ChavezmontesPiano, the Mexican lead-producer of Emiliano Rocha Minter’s “We Are the Flesh,” a carnal allegory of modern Mexico and another movie backed by Gonzalez Inarritu, albeit in terms of endorsement and promotion, which Piano released in Mexico on Friday the 13th of October. Alvarez’s shingle Alacran con Alas and Germany’s Sutor Kolonko are co-producers of “Gaze.”

“Alejandro is an old childhood friend and we both worked in radio, too,” said Alvarez. “He has always liked my documentaries; he finds them – inexplicably – more complicated to make than fiction features,” he mused.

New Photos From Benh Zeitlin's Sundance & Cannes Sensation 'Beasts Of The Southern Wild'

We get one every year; an indie darling that rises from anonymity to award season contender. This year, it looks like that film may very well be Benh Zeitlin's "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," which, after debuting in Park City to ravishing acclaim and a Grand Jury prize, recently went on to impress at Cannes (where it earned Fipresci honors as well).

The film is led by the pint-sized Hushpuppy (a pretty ferocious performance by newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) who lives with her Daddy in the The Bathtub, which is essentially New Orleans, in a magical realist tale featuring prehistoric creatures, melting icecaps, hurricanes and more. The film is pretty much synopsis-proof, so just believe us when we say this is one you'll want to see on the big screen.

The 53rd Annual Premio Ariel (Ariel Awards) are presented by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. “The Ariel is the Mexican Academy of Film Award. The Heterodox Award, For When You Can't Tell Truth From Fiction

As many have pointed out, if there was a major major theme to 2010, it was the blurry or even unknowable between the truth and the made up. Which makes it fitting that this year's incarnation of the Cinema Eye Honors, which salute the best in nonfiction filmmaking, have a new category for that very grey area: the Heterodox Award. Alamar Review – Edinburgh Film Festival

My first film at the Edinburgh Film Festival was Alamar, directed by Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio. I was not aware of this film before I saw it and although I am not a big fan of slow-paced dramas, the beautiful cinematography made this film something special.

Beginning with the back story of two lovers who separated after the birth of their son, the film then takes us a few years later where the son is now a young boy and is going to live with his father for a short period of time, where he is taught their family’s Mayan heritage in fishing at his home near the Chinchorro reef.

The story remains simple and this compliments the stunning locations of an area in the world that not many people have seen on screen before. The deliberate pace is a great way to see the development of the father teaching

Amit Dutta's "The Man's Woman and Other Stories" to compete at Jeonju film fest, Korea

The Man's Woman and Other Stories directed by Amit Dutta will be screened in the International Competition section of the 11th Jeonju Film Festival in Korea. The festival will run from April 29 to May 7. Park Jinoh's debut feature Should Have Kissed will be the opening film of the festival while Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio's To the Sea will be the closing film of the festival.

The Man's Woman and Other Stories is a series of three episodes which explore the relationship between men, women and the physical and mental spaces they inhabit.

Jff will screen 209 films from 49 countries this year, including 11 in the international competition.

SXSW '10: Badass One-Sheet for Jimmy Tupper vs. The Goatman of Bowie

The first film in a new trilogy will be debuting at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, and if the vibe the poster gives off is any indication of what's to come, we are so there!

As stated above, Jimmy Tupper vs. The Goatman of Bowie will be part one of a trilogy of films written about an urban legend writer/director Andrew Bowser learned of while growing up in Bowie, Maryland. In addition to Bowser himself, the cast includes Pedro Gonzalez, Chris Jones, Michael Eller, Tim Kuczka, Micah Terrill, Rose Rodkey, and Brittany Latorre.

There have been times when this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) has felt like glimpsing a blueprint for the future – or at least some provisional early sketches. Long takes seem to characterize a group of films in this year’s Tiger Awards competition. Each one of these films ends of being distinct and memorable. This is the kind of fare that only programmers can identify, not those who market the films.

Nikolay and Yelena Renard’s Mama (Russia) includes long takes where the camera is entirely stationary, does not move and maintains a distance from is (only) two central characters. An overtly (some say obscenely) obese son of an obsessive mother makes his way to the store window as he seems to have fallen in love with a mannequin. He then walks into a park, at a speed that he can manage, to eat. Film Movement nabs 'Alamar'

Film Movement has acquired U.S. rights to Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio's father-son drama "Alamar," which will be the opening night feature of the Generation section of the upcoming Berlin Film Festival.

The Spanish-language film, which is currently screening in competition at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, will open theatrically at New York's Film Forum on July 14 with a limited national roll-out to follow.

The acquisition was negotiated by Film Movement's Adley Gartenstein and Rebeca Conget, and MK2's Matthieu Giblin.

2010 SXSW Film Festival Line-Up Announced; Includes Cyrus, MacGruber, Get Low, and Kick-ass

Not all of the great film festivals are outside of the U.S. Even if you can’t book a ticket to Cannes or Berlin, you should be able to afford a flight out to Austin, Texas for SXSW, which is a festival for not only movies, but music and video games as well. Like the years before, the line-up for the 2010 SXSW Film Festival is the goods. Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass will open up the fest and then there will be other great-looking films throughout including The Duplass Brothers’ Cyrus, SNL’s hard-r adaptation of MacGruber, Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, and Floria Sigismondi’s The Runaways, just to name a few. If you’re going to this year’s SXSW, let me know so I can steal your identity and go in your place.
