Of Puerto Rican, Jewish and Greek extraction.

Married to actress Nia Vardalos.

Was the model for the Ian Miller (John Corbett) character in My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), which was written by his wife Nia Vardalos.

His wife Nia Vardalos made a guest appearance as the wife of his character on The Drew Carey show.

Ian and Nia adopted a toddler daughter in 2008.
