TV review: Cuba with Simon Reeve; Inside Guinness World Records

11 December 2012 4:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Getting a Cuban to say anything remotely critical – or even mildly speculative – on camera is all but impossible

There are two basic stories to tell about Cuba: one is of a socialist paradise with cool cars, lovely, crumbly buildings and a 99.8% literacy rate; the other is about a savagely repressive totalitarian state with a failed economy, beset by corruption, poverty and fear.

Of course neither story is true, at least not on its own. In Cuba (BBC2), presenter Simon Reeve attempted to rationalise these two versions by talking to ordinary Cubans at the forefront of the nation's first cautious steps towards capitalism, but it wasn't easy. Getting a Cuban to say anything remotely critical – or even mildly speculative – on camera is all but impossible. Fear of dissent runs deep. You'd have as much luck trying to get a North Korean to complain about the lack of bike racks in downtown Pyongyang. »

Sky1's 'Mad Dogs' for Us remake?

23 November 2012 1:51 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

A Us remake of Sky1's Mad Dogs is reportedly in the works. The Shield creator Shawn Ryan revealed that he is developing a new version of the UK drama on web-series Kevin Pollak's Chat Show. "I'm working with a British writer - Cris Cole - who had a mini-series in Great Britain called Mad Dogs that we're looking to make as a mini-series over here," Ryan confirmed. The original Mad Dogs starred John Simm, Marc Warren, Max Beesley and Philip Glenister as four middle-aged friends who take a holiday to Majorca but find themselves drawn into a world of crime and corruption. Toronto Film Festival 2012: Walter Salles Working on New On The Road Cut

28 August 2012 1:46 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore, »

TV review: When I Get Older; River Cottage: Three Go Mad

4 July 2012 4:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The stark message was that if you're planning to live into old age, you'd better win the lottery

Anyone out there not hoping to die before they get old? There is? You had better watch the opening programme in the BBC's When I'm 65 season then. That ought to bring you back into line.

In last night's When I Get Older (BBC1), John Simpson (67-year-old BBC world affairs correspondent), Lesley Joseph (66-year-old actor), Gloria Hunniford (72-year-old Gloria Hunniford) and Tony Robinson (65-year-old Baldrick) went to stay with four pensioners living ordinary lives ungilded by celebrity and negotiating varying degrees of poverty, grief and isolation – the things statistics tell us are the ordinary problems of old age.

Hunniford moved in with 62-year-old Ivy in Darwin, Lancashire, whose disposable income of £3.24 a day – a sum that didn't even allow Hunniford to cook her standard bolognese sauce for her host – stood for the half-million »

River Cottage: Three Go Mad

8pm, Channel 4

Is the River Cottage franchise finally running out of steam? Or perhaps after 15 years of raising livestock, growing food and educating the public on issues such as sustainable farming and fishing, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is allowed to kick back. Either way, the idea here is pretty tepid: Hugh has invited three actors – Philip Glenister, Keeley Hawes and, in a nod to Hugh's early inspiration, The Good Life's Felicity Kendal – to stay at the cottage, help out on the farm and learn some kitchen skills. Larks all round as the city slickers set off fire alarms, try to catch chickens and get stuck in the mud. Martin Skegg

My Best Ami-o: De Maupassant Gets a Jackie Collins Dress

In the right hands, the works of literary figure Guy De Maupassant are fodder for great cinematic achievements, especially considering that Jean-Luc Godard and Max Ophuls credit some of their best titles to the French author (not to mention an excellent 1934 classic of Mexican cinema, The Woman of the Port). But let’s not forget that Maupassant is first and foremost regarded as one of the fathers of the modern short story. Newcomers Declan Donnellan & Nick Ormerod have chosen to adapt one of Maupassant’s few novels for their debut, Bel Ami, a text that’s been adapted before in several languages (and once before in the Us as The Private Affairs of Bel Ami with George Sanders and Angela Lansbury, 1947). An unwise choice for their first outing, considering its lack of character development and overall coherence suggest that the »

This week's new DVD & Blu-ray

11 May 2012 4:09 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows

As sure as night follows day, a hit film becomes a franchise. Robert Downey Jr and Guy Ritchie's take on the often-filmed subject plays the titular sleuth as a sort of supernatural mind-reader who favours punching people in slow motion over deductive reasoning. This second outing has almost even less of a right to trade on the Holmes name than the first, but is arguably the better movie – it's still great-looking, slick entertainment.

The supporting cast is more interesting and entertaining too, from Mad Men's Jared Harris's snobbish turn as nemesis Moriarty to Stephen Fry's even more snobbish Mycroft Holmes – who insists on calling his brother "Shirley". It's a more lavish, detailed, camp and fun world.

If you're expecting clever wordplay and thrashing through clues then you're better off with the BBC's Sherlock. This one is all about huge guns and running through exploding forests. »

As 'Treasure Island's' Long John Silver, Eddie Izzard gets his bald pirate on

5 May 2012 3:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Over a glass of wine at a busy restaurant bar adjacent to a mall cinema on the west side of Los Angeles, British comic and actor Eddie Izzard shares his long-standing desire to be bald -- not permanently, mind you, but just for a role.

"I've been trying to shave my head in some role for eight years," he tells Zap2it. "I just thought it'd be an interesting take. ... To keep a comedic thing going and a dramatic thing, it's a tricky thing to do. If you can break a look, if you can make it so one is over there and one is, 'Oh, God, you look so different,' that really helps."

Izzard is at the cinema for a screening of the first half of his latest project, a new, four-hour version of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic "Treasure Island," airing all in one night Saturday, May 5, on Syfy. »

Eddie Izzard, Robert Halmi, and Thomas Vitale Talk Saturday’s Treasure Island

As we have been telling you, there is a new Treasure Island ahead for us this Saturday on Syfy, who is showing the four-hour miniseries all in one night. More about that below. This version bears little resemblance to any recent pirate movie, other than the ship, ocean, and island involvement. We’ll have a review for you a little later.

For now, check out what star Eddie Izzard (Riches, Oceans 13, Mockingbird Lane), Executive Producer Robert Halmi Sr. of Rhi (Tin Man, Alice, Neverland), and Syfy Executive Vice President of Programming and Movies Thomas Vitale had to say about the production, during a recent Q&A session with the media, including SciFi Mafia. They started the session with a brief statement by Mr. Halmi:

Robert Halmi Sr.: I first saw Treasure Island in 1935 in Budapest, I was 11 years old. The movie actually was made in ’34, but it took a year to get to Budapest, »

Phil Davis, star of ITV's Whitechapel, enjoys TV's modern British horror renaissance

Phil Davis, the British actor and director, says gritty drama offers escapism from the recession

A corpse is found in a dark London alley: across the body a jester's hat is draped, or maybe there is a charcoal inscription of a tarot symbol, or perhaps the spray-painted tag of an unknown graffiti artist. Something mysterious anyway. For this is British crime drama – the new, macabre style. No more slamming car doors and seedy nightclubs. Popular thriller series such as Whitechapel on ITV or Sherlock on the BBC rely instead on chilling their audiences to the bone. And somewhere, amid the gloom, the increasingly well-known face of Phil Davis often lurks.

Davis, who is a regular in Whitechapel and who played the warped taxi driver in the first series of Sherlock, believes the demand for smart, modern horror is a symptom of the times: "There are two things everybody wants when »
