The official ballots for the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards are now available online, and while they won't tell us who's going to be nominated, they can tell us who won't be.
We scoured the ballots to dig up the notable omissions (if you were hoping for an Arya Stark nomination, better luck next year) and surprising inclusions (go get your directing nomination, Jennifer Love Hewitt!).
Where's "Bunheads"?
Every ABC Family original series (including "The Lying Game," "Baby Daddy" and "The Secret Life of the American Teenager") is submitted for consideration as either Outstanding Comedy or Outstanding Drama except for the network's most outstanding show: "Bunheads." Huh?
Star Sutton Foster submitted herself in the Comedy Actress category, but "Bunheads" is otherwise Mia from the ballots (even in technical categories like casting, main title design and costume design).
Other shows completely out of contention are more understandable, though Starz's canceled "Boss" earned enough »

Oliver Davis reviews the tenth episode of Game of Thrones Season Three...
Myhsa.
Directed by David Nutter.
Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Few things were going to top last week's Red Wedding, which featured the murders of Catelyn, Robb and Talisa, but, in a way, the season closer was more enjoyable. Mainly because George R. R. Martin wasn't crushing your hopes and dreams.
The aptly named David Nutter (seeing that episode nine was absolutely nutballs) returned as director in an installment that explored the importance of family within Westeros. Some dig family. Others...not so much.
Tyrion
...luckily for Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), his father, Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), is in the 'dig' category. In a tense scene together, Tywin tells Tyrion he wanted to drown him in the sea when he was born. Whether this is because of Tyrion's deformities (Sparta-style), or that his mother died in childbirth, »

Review Ron Hogan 10 Jun 2013 - 07:00
If you thought Game Of Thrones season 3 would end quietly after last week's jaw-dropper, you were wrong. Here's Ron's finale review...
This review contains spoilers.
3.10 Mhysa
There's always a little bit of a let-down after a particularly epic episode of Game of Thrones. After all, with last week's Red Wedding, it's only natural that this week's episode take things a little easier, be a little slower, and ease the viewers gently into the off season for our favorite blood-soaked Medieval fantasy drama. That's not exactly the case this week. Instead, rather than simply having a discussion of the aftermath of the Red Wedding, we see the Boltons actually finishing what they started thanks to a pretty impressive wide shot of Roose on the battlements of the Twins while below him tents burn and Stark men die screaming.
It's one of a few great shots in this week's episode, »

The Mother of Dragons solidified her position on the final episode of season three. So why didn’t it feel more epic?
After a season of epic betrayals, devastating deaths and hot Wildling sex, the June 9 season finale of Game Of Thrones was actually kind of underwhelming. (Wouldn’t last week’s “Red Wedding” massacre have been a more compelling season-ender?) That said, this week’s events set the stage for a very different Westeros next summer — one that now has its very own “mother.”
For the second time, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) provided the season’s final moment, with all the slaves — actually, make that former slaves – of Yunkai embracing her as their “mhysa,” or as Missandei so helpfully translated: their “mother.” The episode ended much in the same way as episode four, with the camera zooming out to reveal all the new followers gained by the khaleesi. It was a cool idea, »

Have you fully recovered from last week’s episode of Game of Thrones yet? Our friends at Where Monsters Dwell pointed out in this week’s radio show that the second to last episode of each of the three seasons of Game of Thrones has been a giant. They aren’t the only ones I’ve heard say that last week’s episode felt like a finale. The shock spread around the internet and the country like wildfire.
So, what’s coming in the finale? Will it be like previous finales and be quieter? Or will the devastation continue? We have a TV spot for the upcoming finale, after the featurettes about last week’s carnage:

Feature Andrew Blair 6 Jun 2013 - 07:00
Andrew counters the Twelfth Doctor speculation with ten actors who could, but almost certainly won't be playing the next Doctor...
After the news of Matt Smith's departure broke on Saturday evening, fans took to Twitter (or were already on Twitter anyway) to propose possible replacements. The breadth and calibre of the actors suggested was reassuring – we have a long and plausible list of candidates for the Twelfth Doctor, still leaving space for a relative unknown to turn up at the last minute.
If anything, the sheer number of people who could, in the public's eyes, convincingly play the Twelfth (probably) incarnation of a fictional alien (probably) makes the pressure of casting harder. Doctor Who's casting director Andy Pryor has done a damn good job since 2005, though, and the process of giving the showrunners a shortlist of actors then letting them pick the »

With only two more episodes left in this third season of Game of Thrones, expect the epic to reach new heights. We’ll need to stay sharp to not miss a moment, so besides turning on the captions (no kidding, I was amazed at how much dialogue I was missing), what can a fan do? Why, watch these featurettes and preview, of course.
This week we have a couple of extra featurettes (maybe to make up for taking Memorial Day weekend off last week), and The Bear Pit is my favorite. That bear. That terrifying bear. Is. Adorable.

Oliver Davis reviews the eighth episode of Game of Thrones Season Three....
Second Sons.
Directed by Michelle MacLaren.
Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
It's the ante-penultimate episode (the one before the one before last). Episode 8 is usually the build-up for the season's main event in Episode 9. In series one, it laid the foundation for Eddard's be-ned-ing. In series two, it preceded the Battle of Blackwater Bay. Series three's teases the Riverlands' version of Kate and Wills, Edmure Tully's wedding to one of Lord Frey's daughters, and is full of subtle glances and looks before the undoubted spectacle of next week's installment.
Tyrion
...and what better to way to foreshadow a wedding than...another wedding? Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) wed Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) in a (literally in so many ways) small, awkward ceremony where everyone hated each other. Cersei (Lena Headey) ended a conversation with her future daughter-in-law, Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), saying, »

Synopsis: The wedding of Tyrion and Sansa arrives; Melisandre takes Gendry to Dragonstone, where he encounters Stannis; the Hound reveals his plans for Arya; Daenerys looks to recruit the Second Sons; Sam & Gilly fight for survival beyond the Wall.
The Verdict: White Walkers, weddings, and witchcraft. Never a good mix in real life, but in this week’s Game Of Thrones, it makes for superb Telly.
Second Sons benefits greatly from more focus on fewer main characters, resulting in a nice fair balance in way of character screen time and plot development. Samwell’s scene especially benefits, his relationship with Gilly not only getting some great push here by the writers, but also resulting in a terrific action sequence that had this hardcore fan punching the air in fanboyish glee. Likewise, it’s nice to see Davos and Stannis back together again, »

Duty and honour are the themes of this week's masterfully composed Game Of Thrones. Here's Ron's review...
This review contains spoilers.
3.8 Second Sons
When Game of Thrones wants to be creepy, it can be very creepy. This week's episode had an incredibly eerie vibe to it at several times, but nothing seemed quite as unsettling as the wedding of Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark. The entire scene of the wedding, with the assembled dignitaries of both House Lannister and House Tyrell, as well as the small council (minus Littlefinger), were all gathered together in the sept of Baelor in their finest, to watch Sansa Stark march to her ultimate fate. The person who takes it upon himself to walk her down the aisle? None other than Joffrey, who sleazes up to her, takes her arm and reminds her that he's not her father, but »

Plus, Daenerys makes a sexy new ally — and, oh my God, leeches!
I can’t imagine anything more awkward than Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) giving Sansa (Sophie Turner) away at her wedding to Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) — who’s now better known as “the god of t**s and wine” — and yet that’s exactly what happened on the May 19 episode of Game Of Thrones, which also saw the series’ most intense White Walker encounter yet!
Anyway, Tyrion and Sansa’s super-uncomfortable union had all the requirements for a classic Westeros wedding, complete with rape threats and a war of words between Cersei (Lena Headey) and Margaery (Natalie Dormer). Perhaps I could best sum up their interaction with Cersei’s final threat: “If you ever call me sister again, I’ll have you strangled in your sleep.” What. A. Bitch.
Come sex time, Tyrion was so drunk that he could barely stand — classic T! »

[Warning: spoilers ahead for Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, “Second Sons”] The Lannisters sure know how to throw a wedding. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Sansa's (Sophie Turner) big day included threats of rape, promises of murder and talk of impregnating the poor 14-year-old bride. This all set the stage for Tyrion to risk his life by directing one amazing zinger at Joffrey (Jack Gleeson). But first, the background. Joffrey was horrid during the wedding ceremony. He insisted on giving the bride away since she had no father to do so. (We seem to recall there’s an interesting

Only three episodes left in this year’s epic season of Game of Thrones. We actually got a bit of happy news last week amongst all the scheming and grisly goings-on, so I’m expecting heaps of bad news this week. Best of luck to Arya, Tyrion, and the Khaleesi, my personal favorites.

Oliver Davis reviews the seventh episode of Game of Thrones Season Three....
"Go Lannisters!"
The Bear and the Maiden Fair.
Directed by Michelle MacLaren.
Written by George R.R. Martin.
I didn't have the chance to review last week's episode of Game of Thrones. I was out of the realm, across the Shivering Sea, where they have terrible WiFi. It meant a double bill for me, and although Episode 7 was very enjoyable, last week's, The Climb, was superb and up there with the best of the show's. The quasi-montage of Littlefinger's monologue, Tyrion struggling to tell Sansa about their upcoming marriage and the view from the top of The Wall...at this rate, Season Three will easily surpass last year's.
But now to The Bear and the Maiden Fair, written by Big Daddy, George R.R. Martin, himself. And I think I speak for most fans of A Song of Ice and Fire when I write. »

George R.R. Martin's script makes a great show even stronger this week. Here's Ron's review of The Bear And The Maiden Fair...
This review contains spoilers.
3.7 The Bear and the Maiden Fair
The episodes written by George R. R. Martin have traditionally been some of the best of their particular season. Since he's the man who invented the characters that inhabit this world (and the world itself for that matter), it's only natural that he seems to have the deftest touch when it comes to creating episodes and writing for the characters. In his hands, the already sharp dialogue gets that much sharper, honed and clever without being forced. His scripts tend to feel very natural, which is pretty impressive when you have slaver kings being threatened by dragons.
That is a very important skill to have when dealing with a dialogue-heavy episode, »

Plus, King Joffrey plays target practice with an unusual partner — and wins.
After finally having weird cave sex last week, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Ygritte climbed the next wall of their relationship on the May 5 episode of Game Of Thrones. Only their new ‘wall’ wasn’t metaphorical. It was very much the literal Wall of Westeros, and they nearly died trying to climb over.
There was a lot of action on the other side of the Wall this week — beginning with Ygritte threatening to wear Jon’s peeper around her neck if he ever betrays her — and it really helped me to understand Jon and Ygritte as a couple. Her thinly-veiled threat, his valiant rescue, that big kiss atop the Wall… I’m starting to really root for these two.
