Steven Van Zandt Will Head Jury Of Rome Fiction Fest Where ‘The Last Panthers’ Will Bow

Rome – Steven Van Zandt will head the jury of the the Rome Fiction Fest dedicated to TV series which will feature the festival world preem of  hotly anticipated diamond-heist skein “The Last Panthers” and also the bow of Italo helmer Marco Tullio Giordana’s “Lea” about a heroic woman who turns state’s evidence against the mob, among other high-profile offerings.

Van Zandt’s show “Lilyhammer,” in which he plays a New York mobster hiding in Norway thanks to his witness protection program, has struck a chord in Italy where it plays on Murdoch-owned Sky Atlantic paybox.

Rome will screen episode one of “The Last Panthers,” which is based on the real criminal exploits of the Balkan gang known as the Pink Panthers on November 11. The six-part Sky-Canal Plus co-prod toplines Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim (“A Prophet”), and (“We Will Be the Champions”) and John Hurt and boasts a David Bowie title track. »

Pierfrancesco Diliberto, 43, known in Italy as Pif, is a popular Italian TV host and satirist who parlayed the distinctive irony of his TV persona into his 2013 directorial debut, “The Mafia Kills Only in Summer,” which put a romantic comedy twist on the mob movie genre. It was a hit in Italy, grossing more than $6 million, and was picked up by Distrib Films for the U.S.

Provocateur: Born in Palermo, Diliberto studied in London and then worked as an assistant to Marco Tullio Giordana on anti-Mafia drama “The Hundred Steps” in 2000. He cut his teeth on Mediaset’s provocative muckraking show “Le Iene” (The Hyenas) before creating MTV Italia’s hit investigative format “Il Testimone” (The Witness), in which he delves into eclectic topics such as Italian bodybuilding culture, love hotels in Tokyo and people whose parents were killed by La Cosa Nostra.
